*Ithaca yielded 16 this year and may limit the class to 9 students next year

I received a message from someone In The Know that OU -Oklahoma University, not OCU-auditioned 3000 students this year for their MT BFA. This is an unbelievable number but I believe that they attended many regional and state Thespian festivals as well as holding standard audition dates. They then called back 140 students and are planning on a class of 18. I dont know how many were accepted to yield 18 but they stated that they want a smaller class next year and will shoot for 12.

I think this is a great exercise...and fun. I would like to caution how easy it is to misrepresent the truth when relying on statistics too much. The obvious example, with info jacksdad just provided....a school claiming 3000 students auditioned is just not a proper representation of useful information. Yes, if you go to SETC, NETC, and a couple of other unified auditions - you could, technically, claim numbers like that auditioned for your school - but that is useless information, and to claim otherwise is deceitful.

Also, numbers auditioning gives no indication of the quality of those auditioning.

Another question is what lengths does any particular program have to go to, what effort is exerted, to enlarge the number of auditioners - or do smaller numbers of quality auditioners apply to programs that get great talent without having to advertise too much.

Lastly (for now) - The number accepting offers relative to number of offers made is far more telling than gross audition numbers. Of course, there are many modifying factors there as well - not the least of which would be scholarship money.

In any case, statistics can be very helpful and fun, but they can be used to distort useful truths as well.

MTDOG-thanks for a very intelligent response. These are just numbers-draw your own conclusions and if they help you in your audition/application planning, GREAT. I agree that total numbers auditioned can be deceiving. Michigan-arguably, one of the great MT programs-auditioned less than 500 according to their admission officers. This does not mean that they are less desirable than OU. There are many factors that determine where one auditions-price, geography, reputation, etc.

*Ithaca yielded 16 this year and may limit the class to 9 students next year

We were told by the Musical Theatre department at the University of Oklahoma that they auditioned about 3000 for MT, calling back just over 120 to the main campus, and then selecting 20. (18 of which are attending)

A few years ago, it was explained to my daughter and me that you had to be invited to audition at OU. The (then) head of the MT department said that you either had to send a preliminary video audition or attend a "thespian conference" where OU reps just happened to be, and if they liked what they saw, they would invite you to audition on campus. Just because they saw 3000 auditions does not mean that 3000 people chose to audition for the school. The ones at the conferences were auditioning for other things/schools as well. The specific conference he mentioned in our area was for high school drama groups, and our school did not participate. I believe the high schools entered a play in competition and the individuals were allowed 3 minutes to sing a couple of songs to taped accompaniment and present a monologue.

musicmom, Now, that makes more sense to me. My daughter auditioned for OU at Unifieds and was called back to audition at the campus (which she decided not to do, because she had already decided on another college). When I called for information, they told me they had 3,000 students audition. That just didn't make any sense to me; but now I understand how they got that huge number.

Funny our waiter at Applebee's on Times Square went to OU so did his best friend who is now in Wicked he was in CATS till it closed. He is kind of older and bald and short so he has yet to land another job. I puling for him though. OU is a great competitive school. Better then the "PRADA" name brand school that is always mentioned on this board as a "so-called" top tier.

OU is a great program. My friend's child is attending it, in fact, and I hear many good things about it.

I think it is preferable to not compare schools with terms such as "better than". In my view, NO school is "best' or even "better." It is all about which school fits what YOU want in a school. Thus, if one is admitted to that school, it is the "best fit." That is all that matters, in my opinion. I know that I do not think that the colleges my kids have attended are the best or even better than any others. I only know that they have been so pleased with how well their schools fit them and that's all I care about. Comparisons are not helpful unless comparing various schools' features with one's own selection criteria and preferences and seeing which match up the closest.

Oh sorry I should have used the term "more selective"

According to the Dean of Theatre Arts & Film, they processed approximately 800 applications for the B.F.A. Acting program. This year's freshman Acting class size is 17. The other 3 programs (Design Tech, Film, Dramatic Writing) in the Theatre Arts & Film Division received 500 applications for a similarly selective number of spots.

Sorry but I am not buying the 3000 auditioning at OU no matter how it's explained and rationalized.

Just chiming in to add the stats of my school, Temple. It's a new program, so it didn't have as many people auditioning. Still pretty selective, though. It's really a bfa, even though it's still listed as a BA. I think they're going through the process of making it one. They accepted 9 freshman and 9 sophomores/transfers. All the transfers/sophmores accepted, and they yielded 6 freshman.

Ugh. Tough competition. I'm glad my kids did something easy and studied the sciences. ;)

I realize that there is no way to accurately compute this, however can some one give me a educated estimate of

Total number of different students that applied/auditioned for a BFA in MT (also for a BA in MT) at any of the schools
and
Number of students that were accepted to one of their choices

When looking at the stats in this thread what comes to mind is that many students are accepted at more than one location and most (if not all) students apply/audition at numerous locations.

thank you.

I know you are asking for an educated guess, but there really is no way to statistically do what you ask without more information. The list above is not an exhaustive account of BFA programs in the U.S., and the B.A. programs aren't represented well at all. There are well over 100 BFA programs nationwide and 29 or so listed on this thread.

I sound like a broken record sometimes. The schools discussed here are not the only training programs nationwide, nor are they necessarily the best training programs nationwide. (Nor am I suggesting they aren't good - in fact the statement isn't intended as a qualitative statement.) They are programs that have earned a reputation, and tend to be selective.

I actually intend to do a survey that will ultimately answer the questions you pose. But I don't think that information will be available for some time.
