Am I right that the average GPA for UW last year was 3.7? Someone today insisted that no one got in from her son's high school last year with less than a 3.9 GPA. This seems ridiculous to me, but it has me a bit worried as UW is my son's only safety school. He has just under a 3.8 (with first year graded should rise to a 3.8) with an extremely challengeing load and a 35 on his ACT. Also, lots of good ECs. His counselor says its a sure thing, but now I am worried.

Also, can you find out quickly if you didn't file by the priority date? It seems like for a small number of students, they get acceptances within about a month if they are very strong. Is this only for those who filed by the priority date? My sone did not apply until Christmas, but we are hoping he hears soon so he can take a deep breath.

Relax...I got in last year with a 3.75 GPA/2210 SAT score. And there were many kids from my school who got in with lower stats...I would say around 3.4 GPA/1800 SAT. I agree with your son's counselor, especially if you are in-state.

If I remember correctly, last year I applied around the first, but I didn't officially hear until around early March, or late Feb. However I think my transcript loaded before then...(if you are accepted, there is someplace on MyUW where your transcript will load and say "Freshman"). Sorry, I am a little fuzzy on all the details.

I agree with andreaaaa...I just got my welcome packet with similar stats. UW accepts many students from my hs, so if that is the case with your son's school...I wouldn't worry. I also applied to the honors program and I think this helps speed the process as honors cant go over the application until the student has been accepted to UW. The one thing that our counselors did differently though is that they told us that no one should count on the UW as a safety this year. Even with that, I am sure your son will be fine! As was stated, only a small number of students are accepted early. You can check the thread that shows you how to tell when you are accepted...it does work (unofficial transcript load).

Thanks for the reassurance. It just didn't sound right to me, but it got me worried. We are aware of the unofficial transcript load trick, but his file has not yet shown as having been reviewed. He decided not to go for honors, so it might take longer. We were just hoping for a quick decision.

almost everyone at my school in seattle has gotten in that applied before DEC 1st that had over a 3.8 and 1800+. Damn college board messed up my moms credit card so they didn't get my scores in when they were supposed to.

I'm sure your son is fine. Most people who have trouble with a 3.5 GPA or 3.6 GPA are people with low SAT scores. A 35 on the ACT is more than legit. On the other hand, I would say that the admission standards for the SAT are more like 1900 rather than 1800. If you're in-state, you'll definitely be fine.

The reason why some students didn't get in without a 3.9 or above was probably because their high school awards too many A's = Grade inflation.

I went to a private school in Seattle, graduated with an unweighted GPA of 3.5 and got into UW, no problem. My SAT's were ~2010 converted if that helps.

I applied around Thanksgiving and heard back late-Feb/early-March.

regarding the SAT. I said it's closer to 1900 since the average Math+Critical Reading is 1250-1260. In regards to "converted" new SAT score (1260 X 1.5), it would be 1890 or essentially 1900. While I realize that OOS may slightly inflate the #, but OOS and International Students are still pretty rare (less than a fifth for sure and probably closer to a tenth).

Yeah....I applied around December 20th and got my welcome packet this past Monday. I have 3.85 and a 2150 and am from Minnesota. I'm elated! Seattle (and specifically UW) is amazing! Ah, such a lovely campus. Does anyone here know much about its BME major?
