Finally, normal CC’ers! I usually feel like I’m lost in a sea of geniuses when I get on this website haha! Here are my stats: 3.8 UW GPA, 1570 superscored SAT, great EC’s, PA resident, minority (black) status, and I am a first generation college student.

Applied to:
University of Maryland-College Park (HUGE reach!)
University of Minnesota-Twin Cities (They sent me a free app so I just applied)

Will soon apply to:
Temple University
University of Delaware
University of Georgia

Accepted at:
Penn State-Altoona (Will call the admissions office and ask to be reconsidered for the main campus)

I was about to post, being used to the “average” here meaning under 2300 and below 4.0, then I read it. I think the “average” depends on where you are looking at, and where you come from. Average at my school would depend on which part of the school you mean. We have the CP, probably won’t go to college section, and the Honors/AP, will go to college, but probably state flagship. So average in the Honors area would be a B average, average in the CP section is goodness knows how low.

I forgot to mention coming form a school which is highly proud of their academics and top rated public high school. The teachers at my school believe everyone is applying to Harvard and MIT ect. So thats why I am average compared to alot of people at my school.

Accepted:
UOP (University of the Pacific)
NAU (Northern Arizona University)
Sac State
Pending:
UC’s (LA, Berkeley, Santa Barbara, and Irvine)
CSU’s (Chico, Northridge, and San Francisco)
USC [my reach and top choice :-)]

My EC’s are decent in a way considering I do a lot of community presentations and health fairs for the past 3 years. I’ve joined a lot of new things this year. :-)

B is the new average (and that was the case when I was in elementary school since there was no F in my elementary school; D meant the same thing to me as F would mean to you, then my Cs would be like your Ds, with expanded space for A and B grades)

My son was accepted into the electrical engineering program at University at Buffalo - early decision. He has a 87 (3.2) UWGPA and his SAT was 660 Math/640 Critical Reading. He’s at a very good high school but no AP or Honors classes. He is a varsity skiier, a long-time member of the school chorus, and took every tech course the school offered. He also works as a ski instructor. I’m fairly certain he would be classified as average/slightly above average. He is thrilled to have been accepted at his first choice and to have the suspense over and done with quickly. UB is a great school (our daughter goes there also) with a huge engineering program. Good Luck to everyone out there - there are LOTS of well-respected good schools that appreciate B students.

This is a nice thread. Congrats to everyone on their acceptances. You may have seemed “average” in high school but that doesn’t mean you won’t do really well in college and go on to do great things. Plenty of so-so high school kids get into top graduate programs and land excellent jobs. It isn’t all about what you’ve been able to do between the years of 14 and 17…as you know. :)

I just want to say something to all the “average” students: there is no such thing as an average person! Each one of you is unique!

Sure grades are important. They get you into University and once you leave they help you get your first job. HOWEVER, as you move through your life, unless you went to a true ivy league like Harvard or Yale, your alma mater becomes less and less important. It becomes more about tenacity and leadership and adaptability. And luck, truth be told. But your grades do not define you. I personally know several people who were average students at average universities then went on to enjoy big successes in their careers and personal lives.

Yes, your University choice is a big decision and it will affect your future. But it does not define your future. You have to go out there and earn it every day. Some of the smartest kids don’t seem to get that, and can give up the first time they have to struggle. So take heart. Life is good, but you have to go earn it.

You know, most of us are still above normal, we’re just not the top one percent like the rest of CC. 8)

Anywho, I’ve been accepted to: (1600 SAT and 3.25 UW, and 3.98 W)

Pace University with 19K merit money

I’ll probably end up at Pace. I love it. If I retake my SATs, I can probably get into the honors program. According to their online calculator, I’d get full financial aid coverage.
