Baldwin-Wallace College

yay thank you!

mtfan, I saw Hannah in Fiddler this week! It's a wonderful show and I enjoyed this production tremendously. She must be very excited to be involved. :)

Coach, I wouldn't be surprised if A&F wrote that song specifically for Audra. I can't actually remember if it was in the workshop or not but the role of Sarah was played by LaChanze in the workshop so perhaps not. Audra came into the project for the actual pre-NYC production in Toronto (which then moved on to L.A.). She was one of the many joys of that show! Audra had been out of Juilliard for about three years by that time, though, and had already won two Tonys before winning her third for Ragtime. It's one of my favorites and I hope that it's revived on Broadway someday. I was always a little sad that the show, which is probably one of the most quintessentially American musicals was so much more popular and successful in Canada, and had it not been for Canadians, it's likely that none of us would ever have had the pleasure of seeing it.

Just to let all of you know, The Masterclass for the next audition, Jan 21st, will be run by non other than Jason Robert Brown, composer of Parade, Last 5 Years and Songs for a New World!

mtfan --

do you know if you can attend the masterclass without auditioning the next day. In other words, if you are a junior, and want to visit the school, could you make the masterclass part of the visit?

Call the conservatory of music, and they will be most helpful with planning your visit and answering your question. I must say that BW does a great job making visiting students and parents feel welcome. I've now been treated to 2 great lunches there, including the very nice lunch for parents on audition day.

The master class is on audition day, not the day before. It was very crowded with all the current students and all the auditioning students. Some of us parents snuck in toward the end and stood at the back. I have no idea if they allow other visitors at that time due to space limitations, but you could certainly ask.

Call the conservatory, I'm not sure if you could attend or not. Ericsmom is right, the last masterclass was very crowded. It never hurts to ask though.

Right. I will definitely do that. I do not see that date listed on their list of masterclasses generally open to juniors and seniors, so it may be limited. But I will certainly call. Thanks

Any more details on how the auditions went that anyone is comfortable sharing???

I am respecting my son's wishes not to discuss auditions and results for awhile.

In general, I can tell you that BW runs a great audition day. We were most impressed. They did a great job with their show that night, also.

Please send me an e-mail if you have specific questions on their audition.

"I am respecting my son's wishes not to discuss auditions and results for awhile."
That is understandable and I respect that, that is why I put
"...that anyone is comfortable sharing"

I am more interested in a variety of general impressions of BW, from a variety of people; what people liked most, what theywere surprised about, what is different from other schools, what type of MT students people encountered. Things that can't be gleened from a website or pretty brochure. Things that will perhaps help whittle down the list of schools that a student is considering in the coming years.

On most of these threads about specific schools I would like to see more from current students as they are living the reality of the programs; however, I realize that most of them are swamped with school work and productions [or I imagine they are].

believersmom - thanks for keeping all of this going. I'll reinforce what I think I've previously posted on BW. We know 2 graduates of the program who are outstanding triple threats. Even though BW's program emphasizes music, these people are good dancers and actors, also. When we were at audition day, we heard a number of excellent singers among the students who sang in the master class. In the show that night, we heard more good singing and thought the students were good actors! In addition, everyone we encountered is super nice!

BTW - I'm not trying to monopolize this thread, but I noticed no one else has yet responded.

Some people have responded privately-thank you to those of you that have-

I am also trying to keep BW and others on the front page in hopes that more people will respond.

And don't worry, Ericsmom, I don't think you are trying to monopolize the thread :)

I'm currently an MT student at BW, so if you hav any questions you can ask me as well. I know what it's really like to go here.

how many auditioin and how many are accepted?

Not quite sure, but I think typically between 150-200 Audition and about 15-20 are accepted with a waitlist in order to get a class of 12... my year is the exception, 18 people accepted, But 2 have already left so now were at 16.

Why did they leave?

One never showed up, the other didn't like the school

I was happy to learn about the MT program at BW, which I had frankly never heard of before. I went to the school's Web site and was very impressed with the way it looked, the info available, etc.

Can anyone tell me a little bit more about how the BW MT program/major is regarded? I am quite new at all this MT stuff, and realize that just because I had never heard of the college (the way I've heard of NYU or CMU's MT program) doesn't mean it is not highly regarded. Let me also say here that while I know the most important thing when choosing a college is that it is the appropriate placement for one's student, I also have to admit that a schools' reputation in MT and theater will be one of the factors we look at.

Another question: is the student body very diverse? The online materials did not feature many non-white students. Again, not that that's a deal breaker, but I am just curious. For the record, my D (and I!) are white.

Lisa

The Program is very well regarded. Victoria Bussert, the head of the program, is a very well known director throughout the acting world and BW is probably one of the best programs "Connections" wise. About the diversity thing, the campus really isn't all that diverse, most of the students come from NE Ohio and the population is a little less than 4000 students so its pretty small.
