Thanks for the information. It sounds like a very strong program. MY D is only a sophomore in high school right now, so we are in the info gathering stage. Once we get closer, we can get more detailed info to find the right handful of schools to apply for that seem both realistic (in terms of her grades, etc. ) and a good fit, personality wise.

I think BW does a good job with diversity in MT from what I've seen. One of the 2 very talented graduates we know is an African American male. The 2 guy students that were helping with dance auditions that day were African American and Asian. We heard an African American girl student sing incredibly at the master class.

I'm deff interested in the program! The only downside it's only like 35 minutes from where I live now lol. The question I have is do you still in a sense get the "college experience" And I heard that alot of people from BW end up on bway and on tours right away!!! I really do want to go here it's just my parents are sooo close by and they are ministers so they will be breathing down my back about religion!

After my BW audition earlier this season, I was shocked to learn how much the curriculum has changed and I feel like I need to update this thread because BW has changed significantly: Now the dance is much much more intense, with “Ballet Boot Camp” every morning at 730 AM (you are not required to go EVERY day, but you can at no extra charge! imagine that!) Also, the acting classes have been padded up, and with no harm done to your music classes. Basically at BW, you will be made to WORK. Hard. But if you are ready for it, it is an incredible place. Vicky Bussert told us that she talks to casting directors and agents and finds out EXACTLY where her students are struggling at auditions, and then she changes her curriculum based on that. It’s difficult, conservatory type training but the students who I saw at the masterclass made me feel like BW was the only place in the world I could go while they were performing. PROPS TO VICKY BUSSERT!

My son has not decided whether to pursue MT or Theatre degree. Whatever he chooses, he hopes to go to a school that will allow some crossover. Are BW dept shows “closed” or “open”, in other words, if you are a theatre major, can you audition for an MT show and vice versa?

My S will be a freshman starting this August. Its a highly competitive program and therefore i don’t think there is much crossover. From research I have done, the program is highly regarded in the industry. I am thrilled he will be attending BW. The program is also affordable and they offer great merit scholarships.

happydae, I don’t understand your comment implying that a “highly competitive program” would not allow Acting majors to audition for musicals, and vice versa. Many of these competitive programs do so. We saw Spring Awakening at Ithaca this spring, and there were 10 MT majors and 7 or 8 Acting majors in the production, which was phenomenal (one of the Acting majors performing was Patti Lupone’s son). Many of the Acting majors have fabulous voices, and many MT majors are incredible actors, and I don’t think programs that take advantage of this are any less competitive.

monkey, it’s true that many highly competitive programs allow for crossover in their acting and MT programs when it comes to being cast in dramas and musicals. Ithaca is a great example and this is true at other highly selective programs like NYU/Tisch, Syracuse, etc.

Perhaps the situation, however, is different at Baldwin-Wallace because unlike Ithaca, Syracuse, NYU/Tisch and many other selective BFA programs in Acting and Musical Theater, BW has a BM program for MT (competitive by audition ) and then just a BA program in theater and so there may not be crossover in productions there. That is not the same as a college that has BFA programs in both Acting and MT.

Search YouTube for BW podcasts. The productions look amazing to me. Vickie Bussart has a wonderful reputation and her showcases in NY garner fabulous reviews.

I am the Mom of a rising junior MT major at BW, and I have seen most of the productions in the past two years—let me tell you that they are specactular! Vicky Bussert and Scott Plate run an amazing program and put on fantastic shows.
