Barnard Applicants CO '15?

RootBeerWriter: YES, you should call and set up your interview, or at least see if you can set one up. Do that before making your travel arrangements, maybe, to see when you can schedule an interview.

I’m pretty sure you have to call the admissions office before you visit. I don’t know how busy they are.

I will definitely check into that. Thanks for the advice, @churchmusicmom and @KaiserinSisi!

Hello to everyone :D

how good does an interview look? im scared my interview wont help me or will actually put me on the rejection pile :(…
I love barnard but now i think i wont do ED… does ED really help? I spoke to a college advisor & he said it doesnt help as much :/

If you don’t have an interview, it won’t be counted against you but having an interview can do nothing but give a more personal aspect to your application (which is a good thing).

Apply ED only if you are positive Barnard is your #1 and finances aren’t an issue.

im positive Barnard is my #1 choice but FA is an issue
darn why cant they have Early Action!!

Or ED II?

Sigh…

i had a tour today =D
again, a pretty large group for a random monday but the campus was really nice even though we didn’t go inside a lot of buildings (too hot and icky)
the admissions counselor was SO misinformed though
she kept talking about what questions we need to answer for the supplement and she mentioned all the ones from like two years ago. i didn’t say anything though -__-
ALSO i asked about the ‘from fiction or history’ thing, like whether the history person had to be dead or not. she said they don’t have to be because “we are making history right now”

That’s stinks that the admissions counselor wasn’t up-to-date. I’ve heard that it’s like that at a fair amount of schools, though. I asked three people a question at a school I recently visited, and got three different answers, all contradictory.

Barnard’s moved up in the rankings! Now it’s 26, ladies :D

Helloooo

I’m planning on applying to Barnard (class of 2015, clearly) early decision
I fell in love with Barnard from the MOMENT I stepped on campus. Gorgeous!

I’m also looking @ NYU, McGill, Wash U, Maryland, Rutgers, Muhlenberg, Brandeis, The New School, and Hopkins

VERY worried… GPA is pretty good but my ACTs scores are a bit low. Took it once and got a 26 so I’m hoping to get that up to a 29 or 30 by October at the VERY latest

@RootBeerWriter
How is Wellesly (no offense to them) #4 while Barnard is #26? It makes no sense…
And Smith is #14?
Especially since Barnard has all the resources of Columbia University which is ranked #4 of all national universities…
What has Barnard done to offend the US and World News Report? haha ;P

The US News listing uses a ranking methodology that doesn’t properly account for Barnard’s shared resources with Columbia … so in terms of the “data” used, Barnard looks like it has very few resources – small endowment, small library, etc. Of course the reality it the opposite – Barnard has far greater resources.

Here’s an example – by the time my daughter had finished her thesis, she had accumulated about 120 library books in her room - apparently there is no limit on the time that students may keep books they’ve checked out. So before she graduated, she had to take all those books back. Since there were so many, her dad & I helped her. She sorted her books into groups and then loaded them all into a cart. In order to take all the books back, d. had to make 4 different stops – first to Butler library at Columbia, then to the East Asian library, then to the library at SIPA, and then finally to the Barnard library at Lehman.

US News is only “counting” Lehman – but my daughter’s academic experience included access to all the libraries – [List of Libraries](http://www.columbia.edu/cu/lweb/indiv/libraries.html) – and that is far more than the ones she made use of for her thesis.

No matter what US News says – the reality is that the quality of instruction and quality of the faculty is the SAME between Columbia & Barnard, as is access to academic resources (library, labs, classes). This is something that is there by definition - that is, Columbia U. has final say in Barnard hiring, and of course they want to ensure that academic standards are equivalent on either side of the street. (It would make no sense to allow a situation where Columbia students could cross the street to take an easier version of the same course for credit).

I think that the US News rankings are really a joke in any case – but the methodology is unfair to any college that doesn’t fit a standard mold in terms of the way it is structured. Barnard isn’t the only college to be hurt by US News’ efforts to fit all colleges into the same mold. (Which of course has the insane result of them deciding that the military academies are LAC’s).

One difference this year is that US News decided to ask high school guidance counselors their opinion for the first time this years – you might want to take a look at their list:
[Best Colleges - Education - US News](http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-colleges/libarts-counselor-rank)

(They still put Wellesley and Smith higher than Barnard – but they’ve got Barnard ranked as #14, equal to Middlebury).

I just set up my interview! I’m going in October. I was hoping to have it a bit sooner, but the rest of my summer and most of my weekends once school starts are completely booked. :stuck_out_tongue: Oh well, I can’t wait to visit and interview!

I tend not to mind the rankings. No school can be #1 for everyone.

Hi guys! I’m looking at applying ED for Barnard too. I went to the pre-college program the summer before this and fell in love with the area, the school…everything. I’m not sure if I really want to apply ED since my chances aren’t so good, but I am fairly certain that Barnard is where I want to be.

I was wondering, does anyone know if you can interview off-campus? Like do an alumni interview in your area?

Barnard has alumna interviews

the rankings don’t bother me, I just meant that it didn’t make any logical sense. Thank you for explaining it calmom.

Anyways I was also wondering what the subject sat scores should be like? Mine are kind of weak.

Jaden, you would have to check current policies – but my daughter had very weak SAT subject scores so she just opted to submit ACT instead. At least at the time, if an applicant submitted ACT with writing, no SAT subject tests were required. My d’s ACT composite was also slightly better than the SAT score – so it simply was a logical path for her to follow.

I took both the SAT and ACT as well (though where I live is totally ACT-oriented and I didn’t have any SAT prep) and two SAT subject tests. Compared to my ACT, my SAT score totally sucked and my subject scores were a joke (partly because I was out until like 3 AM at the So You Think You Can Dance tour the night before… :stuck_out_tongue: ). Needless to say, I only sent my ACT scores and the rest is history!

@ bananaballerina: did u study for the ACT? … i took the sat but my score was horrible so imma tak the ACT in oct… any tips for someone who lives in a SAT oriented area?.. i dont wanna start talking about scores but im really nervous bc my SAT score does not compare to my gpa (an 1850 compared to a 100.4 average)
