Barnard College ED Class of 2021!

@caitmcqueen I think you’re right–Barnard is many things, but large is not one of them. They don’t exactly have room for a substantial increase in freshman class size, plus low acceptance rates often correlate to higher rankings. I think a definite possibility is an increase in deferrals–just in case there is an decrease in RD applications corresponding to the increase in ED applications (I imagine that a lot of people applied Barnard ED due to the large discrepancy between the two acceptance rates–while I always knew that Barnard was my first choice and that I wanted to apply ED, it was that stat that convinced my mother to sign off on it).

Also, thank you for being the bearer of bad news! My expectations have have been a rollercoaster over the last few days, so it’s good to put a bit of a dampener on the excitement in the days leading up to decision time.

But wouldn’t barnard make a reflection article because they did 2 years ago with a large increase?

Hey what’s happening with the groupme? is that still a thing?

ALSO LESS THAN 48 HOURS GUYS GET PUMPED

does anyone know a general proportion of how many people get in during the regular round from deferment?

@caesia The number that I saw on the website is that deferred students make up about 1/5 of the ED pool, but I have no idea who gets accepted from there!

@meimeilatte hey, you understandably don’t have to believe me. My college counselor called Barnard two weeks ago to discuss my financial aid forms (my parents are small business owners so they’ve requested like a dozen extra forms from us and he was just asking about that). They said they were really busy and rescheduled a call with him for 12:30 pm a week later to discuss the “progress of my application.” The day of, he made me leave the room and talked to them for about ten minutes, then let me in and told me what they said.

That’s all I have for you guys  you can believe me or not, but I swear I have no incentive to lie. I’m generally very anti-CC but this thread was so great and welcoming and noncompetitive I felt like sharing it with all of you.

Also the article two years ago came out post-ED decisions I’m pretty sure, so I’m sure they’ll do one again this year after Tuesday.

Good luck everyone! Hopefully you have lots of fun and exciting things to occupy yourselves with before Tuesday evening.

If anyone has any stress reduction tips for Tuesday, please share them. I know that I’ll be at rehearsal until 6:00 and be spending every second between when I get home and when decisions come out fiddling around with next month’s newspaper layout on InDesign. If that fails to occupy my time and calm my nerves, a sheet mask, a big mug of earl grey tea with lemon and ginger, and an episode of Parks and Rec. For the post-results, my mom bought a pint of Ben and Jerry’s Milk and Cookies that I’ll be eating regardless (either as a celebration or a coping mechanism).

Also, if I may suggest something, why don’t we keep admissions decisions off this thread? Perhaps someone can start a new thread for the inevitable accepted, rejected, and deferred posts, but that’s not something I know I’ll want to see immediately after learning of my result.

hi everyone! I applied ED and I’ve been reading this thread since the beginning, and I just wanted to say that you all seem like such awesome people. I’m not expecting an acceptance (probably a rejection, maybe a deferral), but any of you who do get in definitely deserve it. I also want to second @rougesneakers’s question about stress reduction; I can’t seem to focus on anything!! these next two days are gonna be tough

I have found I am the least stressed when I am exercising. Whether it’s at volleyball practice or the gym, I am the least focused on the impending decision when I am active. However, as someone who adamantly hates running, I understand physical activity isn’t the right choice for everyone. I also find that going through some basic yoga moves or stretches while focusing on breathing helps relax me a lot especially before bed. If all else fails there is always a cup of tea and a classic 80’s rom com to take your mind off of it (at least temporarily  ). That being said I am still so nervous and stressed about tuesday!

@r8chel @rougesneakers i haven’t been able to focus on anything else for the past few days as well (which isn’t boding well for my 8 page ethics paper due on tuesday) but surprisingly talking about it with my friends has helped (otherwise, i would have just been thinking about it by myself the entire time). there are definitely times when talking about it creates more stress though, and i find that some healthy self-care strategies include doing relaxing things that you don’t normally do (taking a bath, watching a movie, ice cream, etc). something else that helps me is turning off / not looking at my computer and phone and doing something else distracting. i’m shaking from anxiety as a write this, so i’m not sure if any of these were helpful or even coherent at all, but if anyone else has tips PLEASE share !

@caitmcqueen Thank you for sharing what your guidance counselor said!!! Though a bit daunting, knowing about the 42% applicant pool increase is helping me feel at peace with my imminent rejection. If I’m rejected, I’ll keep in mind that this has likely been one of the most competitive years, and I tried my best. If I am accepted on Tuesday, I’ll feel even luckier knowing the chances were slimmer than ever!

@rougesneakers As for relaxation techniques, I like to listen to my favorite music. I suggest you do too - this collection of songs is essentially the soundtrack of your life, and you will always have these tracks before and after you open your college decision, wherever you choose to go to college, and for the rest of your life. Personally, it’s very calming for me to go back and listen to some early 2000’s Beyonce and think about my childhood, then to a charting Chainsmokers song to see (or hear) how much I’ve changed over the years. The record of our progress is in our *records/i. Be proud of who you’ve grown into.

Thank you to everyone on this thread for being kind and supportive! We’ll all get through these next two days, and future Barnard woman or not, we’ll still be bold and beautiful.

@HongdouMianbao I love the idea of listening to calming music. While it’s not necessarily relaxing, I always recommend the “Have a Great Day!” playlist on Spotify to anyone feeling stressed or overwhelmed–the classic, totally upbeat songs are perfect for when you’re feeling down.

hi girls, i’m so happy we’re all here to support each other rn!! personally, I have not foundmyself very stressed out at all despite being a naturally stress-prone person. after i submitted my app, i was feeling super antsy so I sat down with myself and (wrote in a journal until) i realized it’s out of my hands now and whatever happens, it’s really not the end of the world and I will still go to college. or not! if that’s what i decide. At one point i was super obsessed with barnard and i consumed all the media possibly available online 50x over but i dont think that’s healthy. I’m also not usually a pessimist but over the past month i’ve come to terms with rejection and i have the mindset of “I’m likely to be rejected and that’s ok because life will keep moving”. that way if i dont get rejected I’ll be super happy  remember that barnard is not the only portal to your goals. u are all super strong and amazing and I know that you are capable of pursuing your goals no matter what circumstances are thrown at you!!

some of my fav methods of relieving stress are making art (without worrying about quality!), writing/journaling, taking walks weather permitting, working out, taking naps, listening to hype music and dancing around, making food, hanging out w friends! I also adore taking myself out to be with myself and my thoughts- out for dinner alone or on a walk or getting lost somewhere new talking to strangers etc
