Baruch

Cuny Baruch college, best known for business.. So I got accepted there and it's a 1.5 hour commute away. Is it worth it? There's other schools near me such as hofstra (I'd have to pay $4000 more for it compared to Baruch) and Suny Cillege of Old Westbury (I would save $4000 compared to Baruch).

I'm really stuck making a desicion, although I really will not go to hofstra because of the expenses but what do you think about Suny Old Westbury?

For those who live in NY, If I was going to Baruch I would need to take the LIRR to Penn station and then 3 subway trains to Baruch, how is this journey? Enjoyable, aggitating, or worth the time? I mean I would need to spend 3 hours in trains every day...

i go to baruch now. i live on long island (hewlett). its a 1 hour commute. im here as a freshman on a full scholarship, and i couldnt be happier that im transferring OUT of baruch. its a horrible college environment. if u dont care about having a college experience, then go to baruch. any more questions? private message me and ill tell u more about baruch

My best friend currently attends Baruch. He also lives on long island and finds the commute bery agitating. However, if u can read on the train without motion sickness, it may be a good oppurtunity to study. He also says that it is difficult to make friends to hang out with outside of class because most of the students live within close proximity of the city. I That being said, it is the most highly regarded business school of your choices and a bargain for the price. I don't think SUNY Westbury is that highly regarded, and considering Hofstra may be out of ur price range, I might consider trying out Baruch. Lol i think ive probably confused u further, im sorry. But good luck with ur decision!

Baruch, as most of the CUNY's, is NOT your typical college environment. Baruch cannot be viewed as a residential college. The vast majority of the students live in NYC, commute home after class, and especially at Baruch- may work during the day and take evening classes.
my d's boyfriend (from long island) also started at Baruch and transferred out. Due to the schedule of his classes, he often had AM and PM classes. He found it very frustrating to hang out at Baruch for a few hours until his evening classes began.
This can often happen at a residential college too, but at least you can go back to your dorm room or get a campus job between classes.

Personally- for business, I think Baruch has a better reputation in NYC than old westbury or hofstra- but you definitely have to accept the fact that it's campus life is way different than most schools.
The commute from Long island to baruch isn't too bad. But you have to realize that you may have alot of down time between classes unless you are real flexible and choose classes based on convenient scheduling.

oh my- just had a flashback to my college years. I grew up in Brooklyn and many of my friends attended Brooklyn College. As they too had alot of time to kill between classes, it was common to join a "House Plan" (I think that is the right term). I think it was a similar concept to sorority/fraternity. So kids would hang out between classes with their "sorority/fraternity" friends in the cafeteria or elsewhere on campus.

Now I was just on the Baruch site, and they actually do have alot of student clubs and activities- including fraternities, debate club, newspaper etc.
so- if you realize that Baruch is a real urban commuter campus- and if you can find activities or interests, or just a group of friends to hang with during the day, you might find the Baruch experience more enjoyable.
Again, I think it is a stronger business school than either westbury or hofstra.
Good luck.

of course u can still go to a good school as well as cheap such as SUNY schools. I for one applied to Buffalo and Binghamton in december for my fall 09 sophomore yr. i got accepted into Buffalo. Their management program is also respected. Its one of my top choices as of now, Binghamton i doubt will accept me with the amount of students applying there, and such extraordinary standards the school now has, etc. Though I was accepted at Syracuse and other private schools. money plays a big role, but if you want a college experience and an affordable as well as great school...consider SUNY Buffalo over Baruch.

wow now i'm scared.. Is it that bad lol? And I can't go to schools upstate because I would have to dorm ($8000 more). I really want to go through college with $0 debt and don't want to take loans!

funny..i actually wrote this at baruch this morning :) lol

It's not worth the commute.

For business, school matters. Why not go to Old Westbury, work like a dog summers and part-time during the school year, save money and transfer to a good business school for the last 2 years?

Going through college with zero debt is probably not going to yield you a good job in business. Reasonable debt (less than $25K IMO) is OK and probably a necessary trade off if your goal is a good job in business. You don't want to be penny wise and pound foolish.

oh did I mention, I LOVE NYC to death lol! It's heaven for me, but again the commute everyday for 4 years =. Hmom I'm actually gonna be working with my uncle at his firm which I will eventually take over in 11 years so finding a job isn't the problem. The thing I'm worried about is getting a quality education and having a good time. I'm not going to really enjoy Old West by what I heard about it (middle of a forest lol) and hofstra I will enjoy because lots of frueds are going there but I don't want to waste the money. You are rugge about the education but I don't want to go waste 25k for undergrad because I will be getting a job at my uncles firm no matter what.. But for my MBA, I really want to go to harvard or Wharton! There I will waste the 120k no problem because imo it's worth it. But for UG, eh =</p>

don't get me wrong- I think the quality of Baruch is quite high and definitely better than old westbury for business. I don't think the commute is that bad either. Even if you are at the Nassau border, the entire trip should be under 90 minutes door to door. You'll only be on the subway for a few stops.
I thought Baruch was having an open house (I just did a real quick look at the website) check out the student activities- join clubs -get involved.
It is an incredibly good business school- but the student life at CUNY's may be a bit lacking for some.

A couple of things. Baruch is not a college many would describe themselves as enjoying. It is filled with a lot of part-time students who must also work and go their own way after class. Many are older students.

While it's great you have the option of working with your uncle and taking over his firm, you're too young to know that's what you really want to do. As you get educated and opportunities become apparent, you may wish to do something different. And are you 100% sure your uncle's company will even be there in 11 years?

You need the best education you can get to always have options. And fun should be a part of college too.

NYU_poly's technology management is a good program for who is interested in management and engineering.

Their president, Hultin is a founder of technology management.

They have good professors for the program.

I’m currently at Baruch now and although it does not have a nice college atmosphere, it certainly provides opportunities and quality education especially in the business field. If you are looking for good career options, I would definitely recommend Baruch because is located in New York City and the best business companies world wide come to campus to recruit students.

Hello, I was wondering if I could still apply to Baruch for the fall. I am uncertain as the deadline for transfer is Feb 1st but it says Baruch uses rolling admissions.

Apparently it’s too late. [Application Process - Baruch College Transfer Services](http://www.baruch.cuny.edu/transfer/admissions/application_process/)

You could have googled that.
