Ayeee theater kid admits!!!

To everyone who didn’t get in, this is not the be all end all! Bates is notorious about demonstrated interest (I didn’t demonstrate any but maybe being in Maine helped). You all seem wonderful and you will get into some fantastic schools! I know it!

There is a quite useful FB Bates parent group for all the new parents here, and I think the Instagram 2025 account is quite active per my son for the students ( not sure about fb).

Did any of you accepted people get emails about whether you had questions and stuff prior?

I got accepted and I didn’t! I only got an email yesterday about decisions coming out today and an email today about my application status update

@palesa26 an international who needs a lot of financial aid.

Congratulations to all those accepted, and to those who are waitlisted, contact the Bates admissions office to let them know. Send an update with grades and any awards/achievements/noteworthy developments. My D did that several years ago and got off Bates’ waitlist. She had an amazing and life-changing four years. @bunny34422 @earlgereytea @BlueLakely

To those who were denied, rest assured you will end up at the best school for you. Good luck to all!

Sorry, might be a stupid question but this is my family’s first time going through the college process so we’re a bit clueless lol. When would be the best/suggested time to send an update on grades, achievements etc? I want to make sure I don’t send anything too early or too late haha

Honestly, there isn’t necessarily a “best time”. I was deferred from two schools and sent my AO an email within a week of getting my decision (I think a day or two after) but definitely sent them an update as soon as possible to show that you’re still interested in the school.

Got in and did not receive those messages

@bunny34422 , you only want to send one update, so there is no need to rush if you are expecting an award or anything else that might really change your file. Years ago, DS sent his update and desire to stay on the WL on 4/28 and got an acceptance one week later.

This will also give you a chance to be absolutely sure that you don’t have an acceptance you like better than Bates.

As a heads up, in the 19-20 year, Bates offered WL spots to 1604 students and 643 accepted WL spots. 42 were admitted. My sense is that only that last category changes much from year to year, so it’s really a roll of the dice as to what holes they are looking to fill through the WL and whether you will be the one who can fill one.

My D sent two emails. The first was shortly after she was initially waitlisted, the second was about six weeks later, after May 1, to reaffirm her commitment and send a little update. She didn’t get off the waitlist until summer.

@gardenstategal brings up a good point. It’s very difficult to know year to year how many they take off waitlist, but I am pretty sure they will take those from the waitlist who they believe are more likely to attend. in the year '17-'18, 7 students got in from the waitlist. In the year '18-'19, 0 got in from waitlist.

I think, but I don’t have any way of knowing, that for this current cycle, quite a few students might get in from waitlist. Mainly due to there being a lot of uncertainty on the part of many students, and the fact that many students applied to more schools than ever due to that uncertainty.

ETA: for the 20-21 cycle, 4 were admitted from waitlist.

Our D was thrilled to be accepted to Bates this morning! Anyone with a current student willing to answer some questions? Some are more general, some about life during Covid? I’m hopeful that things will be more open very soon but would love to hear some feedback about how everything went this year! Thanks so much.

@fluffypandas0101 is a current student who might be able to help.

My D graduated last year, so if you want feedback from a Class of 2020 Bates grad, let me know.
