You look to have many similar schools to my D21. Also active in Theater - in fact she’s at school now as part of Les Miserables performance. I see overlap with Bates, and Oberlin. She’s also applied to Colby, Middlebury, Vassar, and Macalester. Basically small LAC’s - mainly NE except Oberlin/Macalester. Best of luck to you!
Nice, tons of overlap! Maybe we’ll even perform in college together (if we end up at the same school)! Best of luck to your daughter! Did she get into Bates?
(And I also applied to Colby, Midd, and Vassar!)
So kind of you, thank you! I’ll PM you as well. It’s so exciting!
Yes - she was excited to get an acceptance today!
Yay!! Congrats to your daughter!
D was waitlisted. Disappointed. Hoping for better news from other schools.
Bates is pretty weird with their admissions decisions, so while this news may be disappointing, don’t feel too discouraged! I am sure that your daughter will get into a school that is even better for her!
international student here accepted with great financial aid!!
Congrats!!
weird how?
They are super stingy about financial need and demonstrated interest, so they won’t necessarily admit the most “qualified” applicants.
That isn’t to say that those who get in aren’t qualified, but a lot of qualified folks don’t get in because of these factors!
If you look at their common data sets, they take more than 60% of their first-year class from ED1 and ED2. This leads to lots of yield protection in the form of WL in RD. My D and her BFF were both over Bates’ 75% in scores, had 4.0 GPAs, strong arts ECs and were WL’d. They were both accepted to Williams RD and my D got into Middlebury, Haverford, Vassar, and Colby while her friend also got into Wesleyan and Wellesley, among others. My D didn’t take her WL spot, but her BFF did and was offered a spot well before May 1, which she declined. Another female classmate got in off the WL and went, along with 3 ED students.
Re @PerformingDude’s comments: we visited campus, toured, and attended an info session, plus my D had an alumni interview; we did not apply for FA.
That is so weird! It sounds like both applicants were perfectly qualified for Bates! Perhaps the issue is that they were overqualified? Since they clearly have strong records perhaps the admissions team was worried they would choose another, more compelling school (in the applicants’ eyes). It’s also a really competitive school so there’s that!
(In that case maybe I should be worried if Bates was like “oh, he’s average enough for us” LOL)
No way, they would be lucky to have you. (And my daughter let it all go, I’m just a bitter Betty b/c I loved Bates.)
Thanks!! It’s ok to be a bitter Betty! I’m still a pretty bitter Betty about Yale haha
Also, getting off the Bates waitlist is an impressive feat, at least for last year! Of the 676 students who accepted the waitlist, only 4 got accepted!!
On their admitted student page it looks as if there will be several upcoming online opportunities with students to discuss that ( along with perhaps someone here).
