Thanks so much for your response - can I ask whether her aid matched the NPC? In other words, was it less than she was expecting?
I was talking to her yesterday, and she told me that the Bates estimate was less than she expected (though she thought that she wouldn’t get anything since she was accepted off the waitlist).
For what it’s worth, if it does not match you can walk away from the ED offer.
If she truly loves it and her numbers match I’d go for it but also find an ED2 school as a second option.
IMO (based on what I saw this year) walk away from a deferral and move on to the ED2.
Run their NPC first. If your earnings and assets are straightforward, you should have a very good idea of how much aid to expect. Bates meets 100% of demonstrated need. That isn’t the same as need blind though.
You will have to submit the FAFSA and CSS. If the NPC shows that Bates is affordable, then there is not much risk in submitting ED. Bates is need aware, but if they want your student, they will give her the aid in the ED round if they determine that she has financial need.
It’s tougher to get aid in the RD round. Once they have made admissions decisions for ED and a number of RD students, and have distributed what financial aid they have in the pot (who knows what those numbers are), remaining admissions decisions may indeed come down to full pay versus those with financial need.
One more data point for you… my DD applied ED. Our finances are straightforward, and our aid package was very close (slightly better) than the NPC.
Best of luck!
Thanks! This is helpful information from both @mainlandjones and @Lindagaf.
In this New York Times article Bates was asked about its policies:
As I recall, Bates suggested that it maintains a need-aware admission policy, at least to some degree.
Was your friend an international student that got off the waitlist? Do you know if she received a call or email?
hi! No, she was domestic. & she got a phone call
Thank you!
In past, Bates has waited until May 1 to go to the WL.
Any news
I have heard of a few people unofficially. It’s hearsay though.
I think any waitlist movement going forward will be restricted to a couple of people here and there. I’d also say that there’s probably no harm now in contacting admissions again to let them know you’d take a waitlist offer, especially if you are full pay.
