BC vs. NYU

I'm a freshmen at BC (3.8 GPA) and I'm thinking it might be too expensive here. NYU is expensive too obviously, but I would most likely commute if I decide to transfer. So, do you think it is worth to pick up everything and transfer to NYU to save about 30 thousand, or should I just stay at BC? My only hesitation I guess is that I wouldn't do as well at NYU. Thanks

if you can save 30k, then by all means. BC & NYU have basically the same prestige, at least in my eyes. =)

no way man, BC and NYU are miles apart in prestige. NYU is NYU, a name EVERYONE knows, BC not so much. BU is closer to NYU in prestige but still isnt on the same level. And im wondering how ur gonna save 30k transfering to NYU? ok u might not have to pay for dorms at BC, unless ur parents live in NY, ur gonna be paying alot of money for rent. But if u can pull it off, by all means , transfer to NYU.

PS - my friend is a freshman there, at CAS, smart girl, but shes having trouble. biggest concern is that the professors dont really teach, u gotta learn alot of things on ur own.

^Umm BC is ranked 34, NYU is ranked 33, so as far as prestige goes, they're exactly the same. Not sure where you're getting "miles apart". BC is considered more presitigious in Boston, NYU in NY.

I go to NYU and one of my close friends goes to BC. Based on what she's said, they're pretty much the same as far as workload goes. So if your only hesitation is you might not do as well, please don't worry! If you can manage a 3.8 there, you'll do well here too.

You might want to consider that they're completely different environments. BC is small, beautiful, with a lovely campus, a little out of Boston. NYU is in the heart of Manhattan. We're huge and have no campus. If you're fine with that, apply, and I wish you good luck :)

Concord, I'm just going off the idea that if I commute from home (Jersey), I won't have to pay the 10 or 11 thousand a year in room or board. True, the commute costs would be a good amount too. My sister might get an apartment in the city, so I might just live with her too.
Molly, I think I'm pretty good with adapting to change. I don't really seem to mind the difference.

If you can save that much, go for it! NYU is considered to be on par with BC. But, they are Very different schools.

If you are really concerned with money, transfer to somewhere in the tri-state area that isnt so expensive.

Also, beware. Idk where you come from in Jersey, but NJ transit is expensive and it adds up really fast.

are there any other schools, though, that are on par with either one of these and are cheaper?

check the US News Rankings, and I've never heard someone say BU is more prestigious than BC.

i'm not sure where you're getting your information from, but you're 100% wrong. BC and NYU are comparable schools. when you compare NYU Stern with i think it's Caroll, then there is much more of a difference. but other than that, they are completely comparable.

the CUNY system is actually really good. they might not have the prestige factor that BC or NYU has - but in my eyes, they are great. especially hunter, baruch, & CCNY.

i would say fordham, but it's just as much $$.

@stephennn

i transferred out of the CUNY system to NYU. granted, i was at CSI, but i really, truly disliked my CUNY. i really felt like i had no support academically or career-wise, the facilities were falling apart, and unless i was going to be a teacher or a nurse, i was screwed at CSI. baruch and hunter are a little better, but i don't know if the lack of support is a symptom of CUNY in general or just CSI.

@conchord

that's a huge, sweeping generalization. professors do teach here at nyu. you're going to find dud professors at any school, whether it's NYU, BU or Cornell. if your friend is having trouble, then it might just be that she's having a hard time adjusting to college, or that her professors weren't that great (happens all the time in huge lecture classes).

i'm also having a little trouble with the "prestige" concept in this thread. employers aren't going to whip out the rankings when you're applying for a job or even grad school. (business school and medical school are different and the op didn't specify their major.) so prestige is pretty relative. BC, BU and NYU are fine schools.

@shp

if it would really be cheaper, you can try applying to nyu. i'm curious as to what your intended major is, and what school you would be transferring into here at nyu.

I'm applying to CAS as a history major (probably going to law school after)

@shp

then i would tell you to go where there would be less debt. you're going to rack up a ton of law school debt. law school is a number game. as long as you have a solid gpa/high LSAT score/good letters of recommendation and whatnot, you'll be fine.

just apply to transfer to NYU. transfer admissions are tricky and you might not get in. apply to a few NYC area schools. what about adelphi university? i know it's in Long Island, but the tuition comes out to about 25,000 a year. pace university has similar tuition costs and it's in lower Manhattan.

hm, yeah i've never really had any friends that went to CSI. my cousin goes to wagner, which is on staten island and loves it (which is irrelevant haha). i really don't like staten island though =/, but my friends that go to hunter & baruch love it there. i'm assuming CCNY is good to because it's one of the top senior colleges in CUNY + it has the sophie davis medical program.

i agree with miss american pie about pace & adelphi.

@stephennn

no one likes staten island. -i- don't like staten island and my family lives there. :P

wagner is a really nice school, but it's pretty expensive and a pain in the butt to get to with no car. i liked what i saw. they gave me a bunch of scholarship money but in the end, i couldn't come up with enough money to go there.

Cheaper schools....
Well if you live in Jersey there is always rutgers, but It sounds like you want a city school. Try CUNY Baruch and CUNY Hunter. There is also Pace and Marymount Manhattan. Idk what you are interested in, but you can always go to NJIT or Stevens.

@bryanm

he mentioned above that he was a history major planning on law school. so no, njit and stevens wouldn't work.

thanks all for the help. i'll look into it. to be honest my plan was going to a pretty good undergrad school and then probably going a law school that would give me money, if i do well that is. i'm still thinking about it obviously.

Good Luck about getting a law school to give you money. Especially if it's a prestigious law school.

law school isn't like graduate school. just like medical school, they don't give out much money.

You must have not grown up in a very diverse environment.

Nearly every single Irish or Italian Roman Catholic family will have heard of Boston College.

City life is expensive, exhausting, and overwhelming, and taking the subway from class to class is daunting.

But, if you can save 30k, go for it. Since you would commute from home, presumably, you'll have home-cooked food and some place warm to sleep every night.

The USNWR polls the WASP establishment. Anti-Catholic, if you've studied Protestant-Catholic relations in United States and European history. BU is definitely better-known that BC internationally.
