Im with two of my friends from home and were trying to make a decision about which residence hall to stay in.

Were afraid of the height at Beaty and the constant elevator breakdowns.

Yulee is nice with option to have a triple since we want to stay together but were not too fond of the community bathrooms

so what im asking world... is WHAT WOULD YOU DO!!!!

Yulee. Community bathrooms are not as bad as you think. I mean it’s not like everyone takes 10 showers a day at the exact same time. You just get to meet more people of which you may end up rooming with later on.

yea but do you think the advantages of having our own bathroom and a kitchen are a reason to choose beaty over yulee?

Trying to get a feel for a decent dorm

Honestly, from my experience Beaty isn’t that social, so I don’t really think it’s ideal for first years. It’s the community bathrooms, kitchens, and living spaces that create social interaction and help you make friends. Especially because you’re living with friends from home, I’d live in Yulee.

Here is my take: With Beaty you do get your own bathroom and kitchen. It is a great benefit as so far as privacy is concerned and if you are going to cook and eat-in most of the time. However, having your own DESIGNATED bathroom has its cons also. If you are running late and your roommate is taking a shower, you don’t have the option of the community showers whereas multiple showers are at your disposal at the same time. You have to sit and wait at Beaty.

Another point is how social you want to be. If you keep to yourself and just want to hang out with your roommates then Beaty is fine. Having a private bathroom and kitchen naturally breeds a more introverted environment. If you want to meet other students, then Yulee naturally provides that social environment as more people are going to be roaming the halls, kitchen, and bathroom areas.

It’s really up to you and your personality.

I recommend Yulee. You are closer to campus. Yulee was renovated including bathrooms a few years ago. You meet more people with community bathrooms, really! You can do it for a year to meet a great circle of friends. Beaty has really small bedrooms even though you have a small bathroom and small kitchen that holds some of the desks, I believe. My S lived in Broward and absolutely loved it this past year as a freshman. Yulee is right near Broward and similar living style. He said that in Beaty, you slept way to close to the other guy in your room…However the kitchen thing was nice.

Yulee is a lot better. I would never ever live in Beaty Towers again. It gives me the hee bee gee bees just thinking about it. No way am I living in the 11 th floor in Beaty. The elevator situation is a nightmare and all the food smells drive me crazy.

I like the older residence halls with big rooms. I didn’t mind the shared showers at all. It’s not an issue - living in a high density high rise is an issue - with bad elevators and strange food smells. You would think that Beaty would be more private - but because of the smaller rooms and high density I feel and felt more privacy in the older residence halls. It seems that people are generally more relaxed and more friendly in the older residence halls - I don’t know why.

Beaty makes you feel like you are living in a small shoe box in the air stuffed in a pigeon hole. I am not the only one who feels this way - I know tons of people who got that same feeling. Actually, almost everyone I knew living there. You get a feeling like there’s going to be a break out of legionnaires disease or something. I don’ think all that recycled air is good for you.

How is the communal kitchen set up? I’m really interested in cooking my own meals.

The floor kitchen is usually shared by two wings of kids, often a guys floor and a girls floor. There is a sink and oven and often a microwave. So bring a few sizes of pots, a maybe a glass baking dish, cookie sheet. You can cook there, wash up your stuff (better bring some dishsoap, some provided but may walk off), take it back to your room. My S and his floor often had community dinners that they promoted on a facebook page. Girls from an adjacent floor came, and people brought stuff, cooked, ate and socialized. This was Broward—3rd floor west.
