So I am browsing around all my options for rooming as an upcoming freshman at SU. I have read previous threads and everyone has different answers or statements contradictory to each other. Therefore, I was wondering if people can tell me which is the best dorm to live in, for freshman, if I want to live in a split double? Also, I refuse to be a part of the freshman 15 so I was wondering if you guys can tell me which dining hall has the best food!

I personally think that Ernie Davis is the nicest dorm to live in – with splits. DellPlain isn’t bad either. Unsurprisingly, ED also has the best food… and you really don’t have to worry about the Freshman 15. In fact, I went down a pant size…

I’m a freshman in Newhouse, and most people I talk to prefer Brockway Dining to Ernie Davis because the food is good and there are fewer people at any time of day. Even the Sadler dining hall, which is almost infamous, can be good once you learn what they do well and what you should avoid.

None of the dining halls at SU is atrocious, unless you’ve had a personal chef your whole life.

it appears that each dining hall has the same food on here… if thats the case, then why do some people say some dining halls are better than others? Can someone clarify please.

As a student who transferred last semester, If I hit any Dining Hall, it’s usually Ernie Davis. They have a great facility, with plenty of accommodations to suit groups of friends, or if you’re like me, they have plenty of areas for you to eat on the run without taking a 4-person table. They have a salad bar, Sbarro Pizza, Wrap/Sandwich Bar, a Vegan corner, as well as a section where they usually put entrees like chicken nuggets, or pork loin (Which happens to be awesome if you get it fresh while it’s still juicy.)

If I remember correctly, the Hot food gets put out about 30 minutes before the hours actually say dinner starts. For dinner, I believe it starts at 5, but the first hot pizzas and dishes come out to the serving area around 4:30.

Also worth adding, Ernie Davis has a gym with all new equipment. Though it looks nice, In my experience, most of the people that work out there treat it like a toy chest and just put things back wherever they want (Don’t re-rack weights, etc.).

I can’t speak much on the Dorm life, because I went straight into off-campus housing…

The core of each dining hall is essentially the same (pizza, salad bar, wraps, hot line), but depending on the size of the dining hall, options might vary a bit. Sadler was the best vegan/vegetarian dining hall for a while, but now that the ESF kids aren’t living there, they may have changed this. The hot entrees of the day will generally be the same at each dining hall, though.

I definitely didn’t gain the freshman 15 eating in the dining hall (and I lived in Brockway)…plus, there are mini-gyms in most residence hall complexes, and the one on Marshall Street is pretty nice for cardio/light workouts.

You have no choice in res hall, and honestly, they’re pretty similar (except Brockway & Ernie have A/C and are the newest)…the only reason to prefer one over the other is based on where you take the majority of your classes. Watson is convenient because there’s a bus stop right there, but it’s pretty far from Maxwell and Carnegie (whereas Sadler/BBB are much closer to those).

For what it’s worth, I’m a senior, lived happily in open doubles my first two years (it’s a LOT cheaper than splits), and then lived in campus-owned apartments/abroad for the next two. PM if you have more specific questions.

I am a Sophomore here at SU. The best dorm is Ernie Davis by far, while the best dining hall is Grahm up on the mount. Except anyone in BBB will tell you that they have the best one. Trust me it’s not true.
