Son was accepted about two weeks ago online and we are awaiting the "official packet". After looking online at the dorms, I was wondering which ones would be best for those in the business school- I think Kelley is on the North Side but there are several to choose from. Someone had told my son that he doesn't even get to choose his dorm, just the community-is this really the case??

Yes, you only pick neighborhoods, not dorms.
Go to this site to see the housing choices:

You can also link from here to the Meal Plan options.

I strongly suggest you have your son consider in order the following neighborhoods:
Central, then Northwest, then Southeast

Central and Northwest are about the same distance from the business school, but Central is slightly closer to the main campus--and the Northwest is known for its "party" dorm--McNutt--which is the largest dorm in the midwest, and where your son is likely to end up if he picks Northwest. (My son ended up there and was constantly getting woke up at 3 AM--even on school days--prior to his classes by rowdy students coming home from parties). If you can get Eigenmann in Central, that's best, since it's only like a 5 minute walk to the main library--which is right across the street from the business school.

Also, I suggest you take the smallest of the 3 or 4 meal plans. Your son, like mine and others on here, will want to eat outside of the dorm occasionally--and as a result you'll end up with extra points that you paid for next year (my son still has 250 points left--and they all expire at the end of this sophomore year). You can always pay cash for meals at the dorm if necessary--or use the campus access card--which is what all the students end up using by their sophomore years, since it is accepted everywhere in Bloomington and on the IU campus.

Last note--choose early--even now. Assignments are based entirely on first-come, first-serve--and Central tends to be the most popular choice.

For those who are music majors, Central and Southwest are the most popular choices. Northwest is popular for Communication majors and art majors and international students (who mostly end up rooming with others from their own country in one of the Halls in the Foster Quad).

Here's the frequently asked questions link for admitted students:

Thanks so much Calcruzer!! The link for the communities was wondeful-
do you happen to know "how" they assign the dorms within the communities?? If we commit over the next couple of weeks and request central, for example, would he be assigned an air conditioned dorm or is that totally random?? It seems that having air conditioning is a real plus for students there and thanks also for the advice on the meal plans- I agree that we'll go for the smallest one to start.

if you choose a learning community (you have to go to certain website or call them to be put in one i think), you will be put in a dorm that the learning community is in. For example: International Business is in McNutt, so if you join IB Learning Community, then you will live in McNutt on the same floor as other IB people. Figs are the same thing, people in the same Figs live together in the same dorm. You can call them to ask which dorm do each community and FIG live in, and you can choose the community that lives in the dorm that you want.

Both Northwest and Central are good for business majors...though I would highly suggest Central over Northwest because remember, just because you're a business major doesn't mean you aren't gonna have other classes to take your freshman year. And the dorms in the Central neighborhood make it easy to get to those other classes AND Kelley, and pretty much any place on campus. Wright and Teter are good places to live for business majors freshman year if you ask me. Northwest is just annoyingly far away from everything except the stadium and Kelley.
