Best Dorm For Me?

Hey~ I was wondering what kind of dorm would be best for me. I'm not incredibly smart but I'm average. I hopefully will major in engineering/computer science during my later years at UMASS Amherst. I like to play video games, watch cartoons, and socialize. I'd like to find people to play video games and watch cartoons with. I'm pretty introverted so I like quiet environments but I still like people. I just wouldn't like to live in a dorm where there are parties 24/7. I would always keep my door open to anyone. I want to take my college years pretty seriously. I don't want to study all the time; neither would I like to live in a dorm that only has students who study. I'd like to live with all different kinds of people (I'm Asian). I don't want others to influence me negatively. I'm really weird once you get to know me. I'd like to meet a lot of freshmen. Thanks!!

Perhaps consider the Northeast residential area? It is very quiet and collegiate, and many of the engineering students live there (it is much closer to the engineering class buildings than other residential areas). It is not really a big “party” area.

By cartoons you mean anime right? :slight_smile:

@shmurrs I was thinking that too! However, will the residents be isolated from each other? I’m afraid the hallways wouldn’t have a single door open to let other people socialize with them. I don’t like to party but I like to hang out with people. And would the Northeast residential area be a good place for someone who is undecided?

@xnakelx haha yah :P

I was also wondering for my son. He’s extremely intelligent and takes school seriously. He is friendly but keeps to himself alot. Definitely not a partier though I think he wouldn’t mind socializing a bit. His major is physics. I believe someone mentioned the northeast area is also close to the science buildings?
@ImaQuilt you sound like you would have alot in common with my son. He also likes video games and anime.

My son is in Central and one of his complaints is there are quite a few people that don’t take school seriously enough. Northeast sounds like the right place for you.

Northeast is definitely where the science geeks congregate. Oldest dorms on campus, though, but good location for science, engineering, and math.

@iculater I hope your son finds a dorm that will fit him! People rarely talk badly about Northeast and they say it’s easier to make friends there.

@geo1113 Thanks for the feedback! I was thinking about Central, but I still want to have a balance in studying and socializing

@MADad I heard lots of computer science majors go to Orchard Hill. Is the dorm closer to the school/department?

Northeast is closer to the computer science department. Also, the classes even though they are not always in CS building are for the most part closer to Northeast. And you don’t have to trek up the hill all the time.

Northeast is really close to all the math and engineering classes. It also houses a lot of studious students, and its conveniently next to worcester dinning hall.
