Hearing Artem's call in another thread and just finishing looking at all of the college dorm info, I can't figure out which has the best dorms either. I know, it's a matter of taste. I was looking at College 9 and Crown with interest, and also Porter (I know, I enjoy all types), but I was just looking at Oakes, even though it seems pretty far away from everything and a long haul to some of the classes, and I'd love to have some idea as to each of the dorms and the kinds of students (personalities, lifestyle, etc.) in each.

Any current UCSC students out there who can advise????? Please?!?

i'm transfering but i lived at college 8 and loved it

Thanks, Hye.

Katiee, when you say you're transferring, are you transferring from one college to another within UCSc or outside? And speaking of which, if you really hate the college your choose, can you easily change? Finally, what was it about college 8 your loved, if you can explain it. I never saw college 8 or Oakes on our tour, and now that I'm looking at all the colleges, both of those seem very interesting and worthy of yet another trip up before deciding.

no, i'm transfering to another uc...you can change the college (i had a friend who did it last year and it seemed to be a fairly easy process, but i can't vouch for that myself) college 8 has an awesome social life and it is mostly people from la or san diego...there are all sorts of "college stereotypes"...i'm sure a google search would bring up some pages that discuss them in detail

You really have to select a college for yourself. EVERYONE will say their's is the best, but it really depends on what you're looking for. If you 'hate your college' (you won't) it is possible to switch. Basically, you fill out some forms, the college you start with has to release you, and the new college has to accept you. It's pretty much dependent on availability of academic counselors vs number of students. Also, if you live on campus there has to be room for you at he new college - this will be the biggest reason for them to deny your request. The process takes a quarter, but definitely doable.

I recommend Porter :)

Stereotypes:

Porter - artsy/emo/drugs/experimental
Kresge - hippies
C8 - surfers, environmentalists
Oakes - the only place w/students of color
9/10 - A&F wannabe's. Stuck up, only there for the new dorms.
Cowell - the original college, no strong stereotypes
Stevenson - Jewish
Merrill - "sterile merrill" and hard drugs - they're up a hill so once you're there, you stay there, not as much interaction as other colleges.
Crown - math/science nerds

How difficult is it to get into Porter -- especially the "quiet" dorms (and are the "quiet" dorms too laid back or just called quiet because I can actually sleep?). If I'm really shy, will I still be able to meet people and make friends?

Also, do they have coed dorm rooms? :-)

Porter was the most requested college this past year - you've got a 50/50 shot. If you request the quiet hall I'm pretty sure they have to give it to you - same goes for single sex halls. Individual rooms are single sex, halls are co-ed (except for women's hall and men's hall). The quiet halls have 24/7 enforced quiet hours - so no noise should penetrate the walls. i.e. loud music. everywhere else quiet hours start 10 pm school nights, midnight the rest of the time. i wouldn't recommend the quiet halls, i really think people are anti-social there.

oh, and all bathrooms, except single sex halls, are co-ed.

i'm at merrill, the dorms are average but nice however i think that kresge has really nice dorms

Kresge is apartments only. Some people really like it, some hate it. I personally wouldn't want to live there as a frosh.
