should i get a bike or a longboard? what is the best mode of transportation? thanks

I heard UCLA isn’t too bike-friendly because of all the hills and narrow walkways.

motorcycle! free parking :D

really icarus? are you serious? i really dont know what to get, and if youre serious, i will consider it!

your feet.

if you want to longboard you need to be really good at it. So far I have never seen anyone wipe out and these guys/girls whiz by pretty fast because of the steep hills.

Personally, I would love to have a scooter some days when youre at point A and you can see Point B from a distance. Ahhh, I hate those days.

Completely serious - there are areas specifically for motorcycles in almost all the parking structures, and there are a few motorcycle specific lots around campus - all free to park in and never full.
I had a motorcycle for a while while I was at UCLA - great mode of transportation. You can go almost anywear in LA and find a place to park - splitting lanes is legal in CA and safe as long as you only do it while the cars are stopped - its a lot of fun to take a nice ride down PCH on a sunny day with some friends, etc… :). Just need to be safe about it - take the MSF safety course, wear a full face helmet and proper motorcycle jacket, etc.

legs too .

okay, thanks everyone… so now i think ive narrowed it down to motorcycle… bike… and my own legs haha

A motorcycle would be useful for going other places. I gather your original question was about getting around campus?

longboards, because they are easier to carry up the numerous stairs

yes, VTE, im talking about getting around inside the campus =)

Yeah, for getting around campus, just walking is easiest. Long board, scooter or bike can work, but it’s literally up hill both ways from the dorms to classes.

Hi! I’m writing as someone who attended UCLA for graduate school and someone who now works there for the transportation department.

I too thought the campus wasn’t bike-friendly, until I actually got to school and saw that the east half of campus is totally doable on a bike. There are ~2,900 bike parking spaces plus bike routes and sharrows all over the campus, and as you get to know the campus better, you figure out where you can ride and where you’ll have to walk or carry your bike. Also, a bike is a great way to get off the campus to destinations in the vicinity around Westwood Village, Santa Monica, and Brentwood.

And this coming September (fingers crossed), my department and UCLA Recreation will be launching a bicycle library, compliments of The Green Initiative Fund (TGIF; a student-funded fund for sustainability projects). We’re still working out the details, but with a bike library, students can check out a bike for the quarter for a nominal sum with a lock. We’re leaning forward city hybrids that have enough gears to help cyclists navigate the topography up by the Hill (where we have our student housing). Personally, I’m pretty excited.

Other modes for getting around – skateboard, kick scooter (I got a Xootr, which is an adult scooter with brakes, which will reassure parents), campus shuttle, motorcycle, and yes, walking.

vespa! coolest thing. 90 miles to the gallon, can hit speeds of 60+.
best feeling going down the pch at 5 am, ocean breeze, bugs flying into your eyes. get one!
