okayy so i'm doing good on my other two section but I simply can't higher my critical reading score i dnt know why....any suggestions from anyone (esp those who scored high on their sat's) to do better and plz be practical its aug and im taking my test in oct....thanx alot guys!

what is your current score.

its like between 560-600 and i cant higher it...its really bad because my other two scores are in the 700s so this looks really bad...please help!

do you miss mostly sentence completion questions or passage questions? about how many of each do you miss?

well, one good thing to know is that you don't 'higher' your score, you 'raise' it

lol, i wasnt going to say anything, because thats so cc.

Oh, I was so going to say something. I was just beat to it.

You can't "higher" your cr score if you can't understand basic english.

Do more practice and follow-up study for the quetions you made wrong answers.

The follow-up procedure is very import for making progress. When my D prepare for SAT, I asked her entered each question she did wrong into a Word document to compile a list and repeatedly study the list she had. This method worked very well for her.

Hope it will be helpful to you.

Good luck.

I used Up Your Score: The Underground Guide To The SAT and saw my CR score jump from a 720 to an 800 after studying the week before the test, along with intense review for the AP English Language and Composition test.

The only other thing that I can offer is to read, read, read, and read some more. Fiction, non-fiction, whatever... not only will this help your reading score, it might boost your writing section/ essay.

Up Your Score, however, remains my greatest piece of advice. It's informative, as are many SAT prep books, but it also happens to be incredibly hilarious.

http://www.workman.com/upyourscore/ -- the word list in the book is available on the website, but I would recommend the entire experience of reading the book rather than simply memorizing some key vocab.

thanx guys...and yeah sorry about the 'higher' issue now you can really see why I can't 'raise' my cc. lol mostly what i get wrong is the passage based questions but all i do is practice and practice

i'll try the suggestion by johnxwang i'll try that and look for up your score...

thanx again and if there are any further suggestions that would be absolutely appreciated!

practice tests.
do as many as you can with timed conditions.
and go over EVERY answer to all the questions.
you should start to get used to what questions are asking, and what type of answers they like (which is what makes the blue book especially helpful).
get to know your reading speed and get a feel for the timing, so you know how much time you can spend on sentence completions, reading the passage, and such.

I raised my 65 cr on the PSAT to 770 cr on the SAT.
How?
1. caffeine
2. not zoning out while trying to read- I traced the text with a pencil as I read and tried to retain as much info as possible while reading with maximum speed
3. the answer is stated or clearly implied somewhere within the text. find it.
4. a little practice, but seriously not much... the other 3 were much more important

you could break down longer passage reading into sections and answer the questions pertaining to each section as you read it, and then go back and answer the broader questions about the entire passage.

yeah, i do the passage vocab questions first.

The most important thing to do is think about what the author is trying to get across. Is the author disdainful, fascinated, detached? The second thing is to always think: "Why is the author writing that?" Theoretically, the most efficient way to communicate is in short, bulleted points. Therefore, any figurative language or even some minor variation in CR passages have significance. So ask yourself, why would the author seemingly "waste" words and say something in that way?

you need to read A LOT. this is the most important thing, more important than practice tests.

Lol my experience with CR is weird, I studied for a whole year averaging 660 on practice tests, with only one score above 700 (a 720) out of maybe 20-25 tests, and I get a 750 on the actual test... so maybe you'll get lucky :)

A good way to do the long readings (or any reading for that matter) is to jot notes and/or outline as you read. This helps you get the big points and saves you time when you refer back to the passage.
My biggest problem was that I got lost in the details and always ran out of time; but after doing this, the passages were much easier for me and I ended up with a good score.

Good luck!
Oh, and another good review book is the Sparknotes one. It helped me the most.

you guys are great, reading this thread has definitely broadened my cr study plan

yes same here...thanks so much guys! i really appreciate it
