BFA Acting Pre-Screen and Auditions. Class of 2022 - Sharing!

Just so everyone knows UNCSA started calling most of the kids that are getting accepted the last two days so they would save the date for their accepted student weekend. They are keeping I would guess 8-10 spots open because they still have have the last weekend of auditions this weekend.

thanks @2lights
my D will be sad-good to know though : (

@2lights Thanks for the notification! this sounds exciting especially since everyone is on pins and needles awaiting a sign from Anywhere (especially top schools!) I find myself more excited than my kid for most news. If he did receive a call, he’d probably wait until he got home (After 6pm daily) to say something

Glad I could shed some light on what’s happening at UNCSA. Last year was one crazy ride. There were too many highs and lows to count. We had heads of school tell her she was outstanding and a perfect fit for their school and then get denied and others that didn’t seem to show much interest in her accept her with scholarship money. She got in multiple top five musical theater and acting schools and it was something she or my family wouldn’t ever want to go through again. In the end she ended up at the school she fell in love with and hasn’t had one complaint since we dropped her off in August. UNCSA is a magical place and the new head Scott Zigler is better than we could have ever imagined. If your kid gets in there it’s in my opinion the equivalent to hitting the lotto. The odds are so long to get in and the cost compared to other schools is affordable.

@2lights I believe you! The New Director certainly seems to know his stuff! I love how passionate the faculty with him during auditions was. I can tell that those who work and teach there really love and believe in their program. When I found out where students have gone off to do after the program, I can’t help but tip my hats off to them. I wouldn’t have ever known just how amazing the school is until a CC Parent brought it to my attention. I hope some of our kids have received the call. If it’s been for the past 2 days, and it was 10 kids so far, we weren’t one of them sadly

D and I are heading to Connecticut today because she has her Hartt audition tomorrow. We’ll spend today exploring the town, then tomorrow morning she has her audition, and in the evening we’re seeing a performance at Hartt.

I’m looking forward to it for a bunch of reasons: 1) It will be a nice getaway and bonding time for D and me. 2) It will be a VERY welcome distraction from all the waiting and obsessing! 3) I’m hoping D loves Hartt and that she gets accepted, because in my research, I found that Hartt has a lot of the same qualities as Rutgers MG (an intense conservatory program with 137 credits in the major and minimal gen eds; strong classical training; a semester in London studying Shakespeare; partnerships with local Equity theaters; a conservatory housed within a state university, so it has a traditional college campus; and it’s not too far from our home - we live in New York - so we could easily come see her in shows, and she wouldn’t have to take a plane to come home for breaks). If she doesn’t get into Rutgers or UNCSA, I think Hartt would be a great fit for her.

So, I’m hoping for a great audition experience that gets D excited about yet another school! I don’t want her heart set on only one or two “dream schools” - I want her to feel that there are a lot of wonderful schools on her list, and she’ll be happy no matter which ones she gets into. (She does know that intellectually, but it’s hard to picture herself at a school that she only knows “on paper.” So I think this visit and audition will be very valuable!)

Then Sunday we have SUNY Purchase, so it’s a busy weekend!

Who else has auditions this weekend?

@actorparent1 I really liked Hartt when my D toured. I found Rusk (program head) to be intelligent and very articulate about the acting world and the acting process. He is a true educator. The building is beautiful with plenty of light and a nice cafe for the hard working students. The students were warm and down to earth. Two students spoke about the internship experiences they have had. They seemed close knit. Her audition was quick and the questions afterward were general and friendly. I hope your D likes it too!

@actorparent1 the best news today! BAL. The bonding time will be memorable. Cherish every moment of it as this will nit happen anymore (college auditions, searching for the school) I know that she will do Amazing. Hartt has an excellent program and Suny Purchase was at the top of our list too. The Auditors were very nice at Purchase.

Thanks for the info and insights, @123Mimi! D loves spaces with a lot of light, so that’s especially good to hear!

Thanks for the good wishes, @actingdreams!

Hi @actorparent1 Thank you for this post! It is a reminder to enjoy the journey and the process, not only the destination.
My D loved her Hartt audition - she didn’t know Alan Rust so he was a little intimidating to her, but he is super kind and very smart (just like @123Mimi said). I loved every thing he said in the parents meeting, especially his passion for actor training. He has vision to shift the actor training program into 3 tracks - classical, physical and film/tv. There are internship opportunities locally, NYC and LA. The city of Hartford isn’t the greatest but the Hartford Stage and Goodspeed Theatre are top notch and the Hartt kids get to participate there.
A note to the parents of juniors that are just lurking (I was you not so long ago), make sure you find a good Early Action school. My D auditioned for Hartt EA and was admitted in December. Having this great school as a yes has been an amazing comfort.
@actorparent1 BAL to your D this weekend! It would be so cool if we could be freshman moms together!!!
And oh yeah, we have Emerson on Saturday.

@actorparent1 we’re heading to Ithaca this weekend! Heading up tomorrow afternoon. One more definite audition after this one (next weekend), and possibly two more (depending on when decisions start to roll in, and what the decisions are, of course).

I know exactly what you mean about falling in love with more than two schools. I’m working on expanding my d’s list as well.

Hi @actorparent1 We will be doing Purchase on Sunday also! Hope to see you there perhaps : ).
I love Hartt. My daughter took it off her list because we live in CT and it was too close for her (doesn’t really make sense as we are closer to SUNY Purchase). It’s a wonderful school and program. Really wanted her to keep that one. Have a wonderful trip and break a leg to your D!

My girl was able to go through this process with an open mind
then UNCSA audition in Chicago and her heart gave way. She is hearing about the calls in the Green Room and right now I’m very happy she is doing her HS musical because it serves as some distraction however that will be over in two weeks.
Ohhhhh- It’s a process and a journey but I know my girl really wants a very strong acting centered program. She’s got Emerson MT, but does not want it. That’s where the program director felt strongly she should be. I’m pretty sure she will not choose it. She loved Elon but it is a school known for its MT and she’s in the acting BFA. She didn’t get the Guthrie call back, Juilliard, or it’s looking like UNCSA. Loves Purchase buts those odds are daunting. Loved BU in Chicago but her audition was short and with the young guy who seemed like a student- not with Megan Mc???

We will be waiting on NYU and Pace. Marymount did not excite her at all (she enjoyed the day though).

Brave kids. Loving devoted parents. We are all lucky that our kids are well and here with us today

@DramaQueen219 BAL! Enjoy your time, grasp every moment.
@actorparent1 I forgot to mention, we met a recent graduate from Hartt while in NYC last month. He’s was there working on a pilot for Hulu, just wrapped up an off broadway show, heading to LA for a movie in March and he says that he nabbed a great supporting role in it.

CMU this weekend for D!

@laylamom “We are all lucky that our kids are well and here with us today
”

ditto that.

@actingdreams great info about the recent Hartt grad. Love hearing stuff like this. Thank you!

@laylamom your daughter have some pretty good offers right now and possibly more to come! I think Emerson has an excellent program but my kid isn’t feeling Boston (I love Boston by the way) NYU and Pace are good waits. I’m sure she will get in at least 1 of them and have some great choices. I agree about Purchase. It’s hard to get into but no more harder than to get into these other programs. They all seem to be accepting about 20 kids. You only need 1 good one that she’s really interested in and you can wrap all of this anxiousness up   What is the green room ??

The Green Room is this year’s FB group for the kids.

@artskids bal on your auditions this weekend. I had never heard of the green Room
Is it a private page?

Yea, I was wondering about The Green Room too. What’s the full title? How would one find it?
