BAL at all your auditions, @ginaf1102, @DramaQueen219, @laylamom, and @artskids! May our kids all end up at schools they love (and that we can afford)!
@laylamom , my D and I are both very short (4"11") and we both have long dark hair (D has black hair, mine’s dark brown). I wear brown glasses. If you see me at Purchase, please say hi!
@ginaf1102 , I would have loved D to audition EA at Hartt on Dec. 9 and get a quick answer, but unfortunately it conflicted with her school musical, so she couldn’t. But she did audition at Marymount Manhattan in November and was accepted, so she does have the comfort of knowing she definitely has one acceptance, which I agree takes a lot of pressure off. Definitely do EA whenever possible!
@actingdreams , thanks for the info on the Hartt grad! That’s very cool to know!
@artskids My S.has joined but he’s hardly on FB . Thanks for sharing.
The facebook group is called “The Green Room.” Have your S or D ask to be added on facebook. It is a private group for students only.
@actingdreams D joined but is the same - she’s hardly on social media!
@actorparent1 and all. BAL at Purchase (if I have it right). Were you at USC on Feb 4th? I feel like we might have crossed paths. I know we were at Marymount together. Likewise, I kinda wish my D had done Hartt. I hear a lot of positive things. We do have Marymount as well, but still heavy into the waiting game. Hang in there everyone.
@laylamom " We are all lucky that our kids are well and here with us today…" Thank you! Put this crazy roller coaster in perspective. I keep telling myself to breath and not project my anxiety onto my son. He is stressed enough!! They will land somewhere:)
Hello again. My D just received an e-mail from Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, where she did a walk-in audition during NYC Unifieds, that she is “on reserve”. It means she is in the pool of candidates they will select from after other acceptances are accepted/declined. I think? If I understand it right. Did anyone else get this?
Any word on Rutgers for anyone? I know they said the 20th, but that’s so late… Keeping you all in my thoughts.
Hi everyone, this is so off-topic, but I thought I’d take a chance, becuz I trust you guys more than any random stranger. By chance anyone has any connection to housing in NYC this summer?
@ginaf1102 As a lurking junior mother living through all of this with you–and sending you and your kids all my best thoughts–I so appreciate this advice re. doing an EA application. I can clearly see how it would change perspective for the better in this anxious waiting time. Is there a good list of EA schools?
And thank you @laylamom for reminding us to be grateful and say a prayer for those who are grieving today. Unimaginable heartbreak.

@FourStars That’s fantastic news!! congratulations! I have heard great things about the Royal Conservative of Scotland.
@FourStars my D auditioned for RCofS in Chicago. No email received. Sounds like a waitlist situation - which is great! Congrats!
@ThenSheSaidIt Let me tell you, Rutgers is taking their sweet time! Ugh! Lucky for us we wouldn’t have to fly, but boy will it be expensive for those of you that need to purchase airline tickets. Fingers crossed on that one!
@yorkside - Thank you for the good wishes! We will take all we can get. I think what schools would be considered EA are dependent on the student. We picked The New School and Hartt because they are relatively close to home, she would be happy to end up there and neither was a school like Carnegie Mellon - where admission is harder than med school. I am not familiar with most Midwestern and west coast schools - there are probably plenty of EA options there too.
@FourStars Did your daughter fill out the RCS application? My daughter did a walk in audition but I’m not sure she has finished the application.
My daughter is a freshman MT at Hartt, so I would be happy to answer any questions. I can say without reservation that it is an amazing program. Last year when we were narrowing down D’s list of schools, we met with the director of our local regional professional theatre to get his thoughts because even though MT had been her focus, she wanted a program with top notch Acting training. He immediately honed in on Hartt for a number of reasons, the stellar conservatory training, the high level and intelligent approach to actor training and the amazing connections with Hartford Stage, Goodspeed and Monomoy. So when we got to Chicago Unifieds and attended the parent meeting with Alan and other faculty members it was already high on our radar. But when he made it clear in that meeting that they were focused on producing actors, first and foremost, highly trained capable and versatile actors up to any challenge - and in the case of the MTs, who were also phenomenal singers and dancers, but actors first, last and always, it really resonated. I remember walking out of that room and we looked at each other and realized without getting ahead of ourselves that it really felt like that perfect fit. I don’t know how to describe it - just this intuition - like meeting Mr. Right! It was a nervous wait because it was one of those auditions where she felt like she really nailed her material - but the auditors including Alan were very serious and hard to read - it actually felt very close to what she imagines a professional audition must feel like. So when she got that accept she was over the moon. She was fortunate with multiple acceptances last year to both MT and AT programs, but once all her acceptances were in there was no question what her number one choice would be.
We live in CA, so it was hard to let her go so far away but she loves the program and actually is really falling in love with CT, even though the past few weeks have been hard from a weather standpoint for a CA girl. It is very, very demanding - the MT and AT students work extremely hard but they love it. When I visited with her before we came home together for Thanksgiving I was able to see the two dramatic plays that were running at the time featuring Junior and Senior AT students. I can honestly say I was blown away by their performances - truly moved. These kids are not only talented actors, but clearly so well-informed, thoughtful, provoking and true. There was not a single moment in either of those plays that felt forced or fake - they were authentic in every way. They took me on a journey with them as an audience member and I believed it. That is about the highest praise I can offer. When they say they are producing actors, they mean it.
So ask away if you have questions and break a leg to any of your kids auditioning this weekend. It’s a beautiful performing arts center and lovely campus. I know my D is working costume duty for the play and is also helping with the Fundraising Gala event this weekend so if you see a very pale, pretty brunette that is exceptionally tall, thin, and leggy - possibly in an evening gown since she will have no time to go back to her dorm to change - that is probably my girl!
@gulf1609
Yes, my daughter applied to RCS after the walk-in and after getting an email Saying it was necessary to apply if she wanted a decision. I asked around supposedly some people got the email maybe some didn’t, but it still wasn’t sure what it meant.
For those with younger kids who are here doing early recon - I met someone online whose kid went into summer before senior year with artistic acceptances already under her belt from attending this conference and auditioning for colleges during spring of her junior year. Sounds like it would take some advance planning (like requesting a teacher rec if your school doesn’t go and you want to attend on your own) but what a great comfort! https://www.setc.org/convention/
Great post @sopranomtmom. I agree. D spent much of her theater life in MT and has taken voice for about six years. In our case, she chose a straight acting BFA program and described it by saying, “I’d rather be an actor who can sing, than a singer who can act.” Either way works.
Thank you, @SopranoMom - this makes me feel so great about my D potentially ending up at Hartt. I hope your beautiful brunette has a blast at the gala!
My D got a UNCSA rejection letter yesterday. She knew it was a reach but it’s still hard. I’m trying to figure out which school we might hear from next. I feel like I saw a thread about notification dates from last year but now I can’t find it.
