The UNCSA call was a waitlist. But, my S has a great attitude. “Hey, it’s not a rejection…”
Still waiting on news from lots of other schools.

Congrats, @STHmom !
Congratulations, @STHmom ! Hoping he gets in!
@STHmom Hey! Congrats on the UNCSA wait list. That is great news. I believe last year that two people came off the wait list. Others may know more about that. Feel free to message me, I can keep you posted of anything I learn. Keep thinking positive!
@“Jamieand Winthrop” when did your child audition for Ithaca?
@marg928 Love that story. My daughter is chasing the same BA theater performance with academics, especially playwriting/screenwriting. She has also been accepted to LMU. Still waiting on a few others. Has she enjoyed LMU? What is her impression of the program? LA? Social life?
@STHmom Congrats! Just wondering if you were from Houston?
@DramaQueen219 She auditioned for Ithaca at Chicago Unifieds.
@gulf1609, @marg928 My daughter also started this journey pursuing BFA, except for 2 schools. Somehow her mind changed once she got thru her UCLA talk/audition. Something struck a cord with her, and now UCLA is her #1 choice. Of course we don’t know if she’ll get in. She’ll be thrilled if she does, and if she ends up with a BFA program, she’ll be fine too. I think to her it was more the fit and feel of the right school, not just the program. For that reason, she refused to apply to Northwestern or DePaul, but was happy to apply to UIUC…
@mychildsslave personally I think UCLA is a different animal altogether. Just having a degree from such a prestigious school like that is so beneficial to a resume it doesn’t matter that it’s not a BFA. My daughter did apply there as well as USC, both BFA and BA, but was not accepted to either. What is UIUC?
@mychildsslave - interesting mix of schools there…UCLA on the same list as UIUC - But Northwestern & DePaul are excluded!
Just curious, like marg928.
@marg928 , @Atreuh, Right??! Why do you think I was so frustrated and stressed out this last year? I think with my D, her #1 goal was to have the typical college experience - traditional campus, dorm life, sorority, football games, etc. Also she isn’t very comfortable in big cities, and that’s why she didn’t go for Northwestern or DePaul (or NYU). Outside of CA (where we live), she went for some Big10 schools, like Minnesota, Michigan, UIUC (University of Illinois, Urbana-Champagne). She didn’t want to apply to USC (she’s heard too many horror party stories), but went for UCLA becuz she did a summer intensive there last year, so she’s familiar with the environment. Also, she’s comfortable with the idea of LA, becuz we’re only an hour away. My D also didn’t start her college search w/ theatre in mind. She started off wanting to be a film major, and it evolved and changed from there. That’s why I think a BA might be better for her, as she’s explored and experienced so many different aspects of performing arts. The only school that would steer her away from UCLA would be UMichigan, but after her horrendous travel to get there and back for her audition in January, she’s now saying she might choose UC Santa Barbara over UofM…
Has anyone come across a thread that is talks about how specific colleges notify acceptance/rejections? Trying to streamline this waiting process.
Hi everyone. I’ve been lurking since December. I didn’t have the nerve to present myself because I was in awe of all the talent your kids have. My S is a senior who wasn’t sure about the BFA vs. BA decision. He’s got decent academic stats (3.75 unweighted GPA with all honors or AP classes) and a 34 ACT and high 700’s SAT-2 scores in math and chemistry.
He goes to a regular HS with a competitive after school theatre program, where he worked his way up. He’s done some summer programs in our nearby City (we didn’t know about college summer programs). He sings with perfect pitch, acts well (I think!) but has never been willing to take a dance class until last summer when he HAD to for his school’s musical. We filmed his prescreens last summer, sent them out – not knowing if it was better for him to apply as an MT who can’t dance or an actor who can sing. CMU, Penn State, Michigan, Elon and Syracuse ALL rejected him for MT, but (except CMU – he’s never done Shakespeare) he was passed for Acting. (btw: I was very annoyed by CMU’s requirement to collect BOTH an application fee and a prescreen fee. . . and he was rejected by 9/15! Grrr.)
Our BFA list was very short because he wants an academic school. Northwestern or UCLA would be perfect for him but his academic stats are a little low for Northwestern and UCLA requires the audition. So, in addition to the prescreen schools, he applied (for Acting) to BU, Miami, USC (BFA and BA), NYU, Northwestern (BA) and UCLA (BA). (Plus he applied to Oberlin & Northeastern, and to our state school UMD and Case Western for academic safeties and scholarship $). With the exception of USC, UCLA and Miami, he auditioned on campus at all the schools. He felt good about his audition at Penn State, Michigan, Syracuse, Miami and UCLA (though at UCLA they didn’t ask for his 2nd monologue- which would have been Shakespeare, so probably a good thing). He wasn’t asked to make an adjustment in his audition at NYU and felt he bombed USC (Shakespeare again) and BU. He didn’t end up auditioning at Elon (over loaded by that point). I am completely aware that these are elites and he VERY likely won’t get into any of them.
His “back-up” (though not necessarily safe) plan is to be lucky enough to be accepted to the various school’s BA program (e.g. USC), or to the schools’ arts & sciences school (Michigan, Miami, Elon) and do their film production program as a major and get a theatre minor. He’s been a making movies for fun since grade-school.
He can’t do that as a “back up” at NYU or Syracuse (they have a rigorous film school application), and at BU – they have a completely stupid rule that if you apply for a double degree (which he did) with Acting – that they either reject you for both or accept you for both. Given his interest in film and his belief that he bombed the audition at BU, he pulled his BFA application there and changed that application to a film & TV application.
So even though he only applied to an elite list of theatre schools (and compared to all your kids’ preparation and successes I really doubt any of them will work), I think he’ll be OK if one of these “back-up” plans come through for him. Please. . . .
Anyway – I decided to join after I read that FourStar’s D got accepted to UNCSA – I was really happy! and wanted to congratulate you – but you don’t know me. Too creepy. Sorry for lurking for so long. At some point at the end of all this, I’ll write a post of all the mistakes my S made without the expert help of an audition coach. He refused to let us hire one because he was unsure if he really wanted to go down this road.
@MomofJ5. Thank you so much! For Writing and for your genuine happiness. I almost felt weird posting the acceptance because I truly am pulling so hard for some other folks on here, and all the parents who are so invested and hoping for a path for their kids. And I know most are stuck in the waiting period. I will PM you too. Click on the little file drawer lol.
Welcome, @momofj5! Thanks so much for sharing your son’s story! It’s great that he’d be fine going to his auditioned schools even if he’s not accepted for the BFA. Definitely takes a lot of pressure off! Best of luck to him!
@MomofJ5 I think he has a great shot at Northwestern! That school was very high on my son’s list last year so I messaged many people on this board who got in and they all had stats similar to your son. Did he do the musical theatre supplement? Also, I don’t think USC allows you to do film production unless you’ve been admitted to that major.
@MomofJ5 - welcome. You are well ahead of me - I lurked until after my D had her 1st BFA acceptance, based on my own fears of her not being “legitimate”. I got huge amounts of information and comfort from the CC community - but they didn’t know I was there. That was foolish on my part, so come on in and join the party! I have no idea how your Son’s auditions will turn out, but take comfort in the fact that there are MANY paths to success!! Also - I can tell you as a Clevelander- that Case is putting HUGE $$ into arts - their MFA is an up and come-er, and that trickles down into undergrad as well. Lots of opportunities there.
Glad you were able to share your story thus far @MomofJ5 ! So many of us are kind of in the same place right now. Somehow, all these much loved, young people will find their way in this process!! A lot of unknowns at the moment, but so very hopeful that all will work out perfectly for each of these kids!
@MomofJ5, Welcome!!! Thank you so much for sharing your story! I’ve felt awkward sometimes sharing on this board, becuz my daughter also wanted an academic school on top of a good theatre program, and she also wavered all over the place. We started her search with Film major in mind, and after a few college tours, she began to realize it wasn’t really her “thing”, so we switched to acting which was completely foreign and thus very stressful. I wish I had found this board earlier. I would’ve taken so much what I’ve learned here and made some changes (and added some schools). Best of luck to your son, we’ll all be rooting for him as well!!
