Bicycles At UCLA

As much as UCLA has worked towards in getting students to ride bikes – creating bike plans, bike maps, bike routes –

[Bike Options, UCLA Sustainability](http://www.sustain.ucla.edu/handbook/article.asp?parentid=2985)

proper bike lockers at the dorms is either non-existent or woefully inadequate.

Frankly, due to the “Hills of Westwood”, the location of the dorms to various buildings, it can also be a real pain in the you know what to get around campus on a bike. Not to say you can’t, because I still ride my bike up to campus, but once on campus, you find you have to walk your bike to get to a class, and may end up spending more time pushing your bike than actually being on it – or parking it, if you can find a place, up Bruin walk by Ackerman.

Best bet is to get a motor scooter or moped, since parking is free, and you can get around quite easily from the dorms to most buildings on campus by going around the periphery. You will need a license or permit. The new motorized bikes you see at places like Best Buy are also starting to surface a lot, but they’re easier to steal, whereas motor scooters of the Vespa/Honda varieties are rarely stolen.

@makemydreams Lol if we both had bikes our dorm would look legit :P

yeah, just be careful to secure your isht, stuff gets stolen here all the time.

or…

welcome to LA I guess, bahahaha. (that was a laugh of sadness)

Ooh- vespa! That could be fun!

Sopheee really? If I bought a new laptop would I have to worry about it being stolen?

UCLA77 so parking for a moped is free?? What type of moped are you talking about? forgive me I am not savvy with mopeds… :)

nm I found the vespa ! some go 80mph!

http://www.vespausa.com/scooters.php#/overview/Vespa</a> S 50 4V

I was planning to buy a new laptop too. From what I hear, as long as you don’t like, totally leave it unattended it should be fine. Most laptops can be carried with you in a backpack so it’s not much of a problem. The problem with bikes is that often times you have to leave them unattended due to their sheer size (which is why I prefer longboards).

One of these, anyone?

I like the price tag. I’d probably have to get 10 regular bikes stolen before I’d even consider getting that.

This is going to be me on my way down from “the hill” on my bike:

@framlove lol.

@shawnabehrens, stuff might get stolen but i’m sure if you paid just a lil attention to your stuff and not like flaunt it around you’d be alright.

ya evan you’d really be a spectacle w/ that thing.

you know a vespa purchase can be rationalized… parking @ ucla is 300 a quarter (including summers it is about 987 per year) x 2 years = money thrown away! at least w/ a 3k vespa you have something tangible!

ewwww Evan what is this?

hahahaha yuck.

By folding, they aren’t referring to the bike frame, it’s referring to how you’re surrendering any dignity you may have.

@mroblivious- I love it! Ha ha.

Okay so I think Biking UCLA might be alright…not as unimaginable as it seems.

I love how much I’m looking into this considering…I still need to learn HOW to ride a bike lol.

I’ll teach you Ash haha It’s not too hard once you get the hang of it and run into a few walls the first couple of times

wow look bike lockers!

no cost though? hmmm

I was looking at bikes today in SaMo and I tried a fixed gear for the first time. Almost crashed into a sign!

But I still want a bike because they make 43" frames for shorties like meee.

@framlove lol. No pain no gain I suppose. OMg theres so many different kinds. I just want the kind that goes from point A to point B lol

@makemydreams Try going to a local bike place and telling them about how you’ll need a bike for college and one that needs to be easy for a beginner on a hillier terrain
