proper bike lockers at the dorms is either non-existent or woefully inadequate.

Frankly, due to the “Hills of Westwood”, the location of the dorms to various buildings, it can also be a real pain in the you know what to get around campus on a bike. Not to say you can’t, because I still ride my bike up to campus, but once on campus, you find you have to walk your bike to get to a class, and may end up spending more time pushing your bike than actually being on it – or parking it, if you can find a place, up Bruin walk by Ackerman.

Best bet is to get a motor scooter or moped, since parking is free, and you can get around quite easily from the dorms to most buildings on campus by going around the periphery. You will need a license or permit. The new motorized bikes you see at places like Best Buy are also starting to surface a lot, but they’re easier to steal, whereas motor scooters of the Vespa/Honda varieties are rarely stolen.

I was planning to buy a new laptop too. From what I hear, as long as you don’t like, totally leave it unattended it should be fine. Most laptops can be carried with you in a backpack so it’s not much of a problem. The problem with bikes is that often times you have to leave them unattended due to their sheer size (which is why I prefer longboards).

@shawnabehrens, stuff might get stolen but i’m sure if you paid just a lil attention to your stuff and not like flaunt it around you’d be alright.

ya evan you’d really be a spectacle w/ that thing.

you know a vespa purchase can be rationalized… parking @ ucla is 300 a quarter (including summers it is about 987 per year) x 2 years = money thrown away! at least w/ a 3k vespa you have something tangible!

@makemydreams Try going to a local bike place and telling them about how you’ll need a bike for college and one that needs to be easy for a beginner on a hillier terrain
