Hey everyone! I haven’t posted on College Confidential for a couple of years, since my oldest daughter was on the college search. However, I have found some useful information here for my second daughter, especially since the search for musical theatre programs are so different !
I just wanted to make some of you aware of a “diamond in the rough.” William Peace University (formerly Peace College) has a new musical theater program, and is going co-ed. We heard about it at NCTC when my daughter got a callback. We were a little bit cautious because we could not find enough positive information about WPU. However, after our recent visit, WPU has become one of my daughter’s top choices, even ahead of some of the well-known musical theatre programs to which she has applied.
The directors of the Musical Theater Department are very knowledgable, personable, and seem to genuinely care about the students’ well-being inside and outside of their educational endeavors.
We saw their production of CABARET on our visit, and were impressed by the overall performance. If we had not known MT was new to WPU, we would have guessed it to be a well-established program that had been in existence for quite some time. It was also hard to believe that the majority of the cast was made up of undergraduates. They have done a remarkable job this year, molding these students into triple-threat performers who could easily make a career on Broadway NOW!
Has anyone else visited William Peace University? What did you think of it?

PLEASE ADD Nebraska Wesleyan University (with BA in MT)

@janelyn - Nebraska Wesleyan is on the list, see Post #2. They offer a BFA in MT (non-audition).

First, thanks so much for maintaining the list! I am sure that all parents doing research must reference it often. I wonder if it would be helpful to start a new thread (make this one read-only). I for one felt compelled to read all the posts on the thread and since you had already taken care of the changes, reading the posts isn’t so helpful on this thread.

A few comments:

University of Mississippi has an audition for the BFA program after one year

Indiana University of Pennsylvania - BA-Interdisciplinary Fine Arts, MT Track (audition)

Columbia College should be noted as a BA program (I recently heard they’ve done away with the BFA)

Northern Colorado, Ball State, Indiana, Montclair, Texas State should all probably have a +. Or I wonder if it would be helpful to eliminate that notation? Maybe just add the size of the class as you have done, when applicable.

I agree with a previous post that it would be helpful to notate the schools that pre-screen

Many non-audition schools on the list allow an audition for scholarship purposes. I am not sure why certain schools have that mentioned and others do not. I would take that note out or add it everywhere applicable.

Thanks again!!

Sadly, Post #2 hasn’t been updated for almost a year now…

Why don’t we just cut and paste, update it, and start a new thread?

Since this list hadn’t been updated for almost a year, I started a new thread (Big List of MT Colleges by Program Type). If anyone has updates to this list, please also check the new thread and if the update hasn’t already been incorporated into that list, also post the update in that thread. Thanks!

Here is the list from Post #2 with updates from shaun0203’s new list (by program type) in the old format with one exception - at least one degree is noted for each school in the first set of parentheses. This is an artifact of the spreadsheet that I used to generate the list, if you want the spreadsheet, send me a PM - it is a lot easier to work with - you can sort by degree, state, dvd, etc.:

EmsDad - Great job!!

In looking for safeties for my D (a rising senior), I have discovered that Catawba in North Carolina offers a non-audition BA and an audition BFA in MT.

[Theatre Arts: Majors and Minors](http://www.catawba.edu/academic/theatrearts/majors.asp)

I think we had them in the category of non-audition BFA.

Thanks to all of you for updating these lists to help those of us who are just now embarking on the crazy ride called “MT Application/Audition Cycle!”

Thanks so much for updating!

Boston Conservatory now offers an MFA in Musical Theatre ([NEW: Master of Fine Arts in Musical Theater | The Boston Conservatory](Theater Course Offerings)) The MM is still listed as well, so it looks like they now offer both Master’s degree options, in addition to the BFA option for undergraduates.

I will be atteneding the University of Memphis in the fall as a MT major! Memphis does have a BFA MT program! However everyone on here is saying they accept 15 people, but they only accept 10. Its a brand new program.

Here is the list from Post #2 and Post #168 with reported updates (program changes occur each year, so check with each school for degrees offered and program requirements - note that more programs move to audition-based admissions every year):

EmsDad,

I didn’t scroll back very far beyond your updated list, but I wanted to clarify some notes. I notice for schools that recently requested prescreens (i.e. UMich, Otterbein, etc) you show a DVD note for them. Is this because they’re doing their prescreen through DVD submission only now and not also using an online site submission? Or is this because they also accept DVD prescreens in special circumstances. I know my data is a year old by now, but I just wanted to be sure of the difference. For instance, if Otterbein is still using the online site submission for their prescreen, it would be good for prospectives to know that type of specific info, since I know some schools specifically ask only for DVDs. Also, I am starting to help some folks in our community in this process and I want to be sure I’ve got accurate info. All of your hard work and research is definitely appreciated! Thanks!

@abparent: The (DVD) note actually comes from Shaun’s list, so I can’t tell you exactly what it means for every case. I believe that it means that some form of electronic prescreen or audition submittal is used in the process. This aspect of the audition process is an area of very rapid changes these days, and applicants really should check with each program for the specifics of how the audition process is run and how they are handling submission of materials.

Perhaps the list should show (Prescreen) for electronic prescreens and (DVD) for electronic audition submittals or something like that.

I thought that might be the case - just double checking. Thanks!

Sorry, the note is outdated on the “Big List of MT Programs by Type.” Next time I update the list I will correct it to read pre-screen either by DVD or online. Technology changes so quickly that I do not intend to differentiate between DVD and online options.

No worries, Shaun. Just wanted to be sure my eyes didn’t miss something. I also appreciate all the research and data gathering you’ve done as well!
