DD interested in bringing her trek mountain bike (not an expensive one) to campus. Anyone have experience with bike theft/storage/cons of having a bike on campus? Thank you

If they are kept locked they are safe. If not, they may be “borrowed” by someone to get accross campus, then left there. Usually not stolen, but moved elsewhere. Many bike racks around campus to use.

There is also the option of storing your bike in the stadium during the winter if you don’t want it exposed to the elements.

My student host mentioned that his hall (Fisher) had space for storing your bike, but this might not be the case for all/most dorms. Just bring a decent bike lock, and there probably won’t be any trouble.

I’ve heard stories of bikes being placed in trees if you don’t lock them, but not of them actually being stolen.

Thanks, everyone. I’d like to know how the bikes end up in the trees! She’ll bring a good lock. Now to swimming lessons…

on a typical Saturday morning in the fall/spring, bikes can be found in trees all over campus, but especially around South Quad. I think people do it to mess with their friends, although I’m not entirely sure

DS had a bike on campus, primarily to get to swim practice faster in the early morning. It was stolen a number of times, but he always found it eventually. Because it was outside in all weather, it needed some significant repairs halfway through his tenure, and by graduation it was in such bad shape he just left it behind. Not sure what “not an expensive one” means, but so long as she is prepared to think of her bike as disposable, no worries. If it’s a bike she would like to keep after graduation, then she should consider picking up one of the $100 bikes available at Wal-Mart and leaving her Trek bike at home.

Thank you everyone. The bike is a 5 yr old $400 (new) but her fave…we suggested the Walmart route so we don’t have to schlep and worry about it falling out of trees. She will have to decide. Thanks again!
