Binghamton Class of 2024 Thread

You get an email saying there was an update to your application and when you go into the portal you’ll be able to see your decision when you click on the status update that will pop up

Do you have to use the email notification to see the status or can you simply check through the portal?

Do we know for a fact that it’s not by GPA? The two (SAT & GPA) often correlate (with some exceptions), so it could be that the highest-ranked students hear first… Could be geographic too… Anybody from the Finger Lakes area (Cortland/Ithaca/Dryden…) heard back from them?

i have a 1440, 102 gpa and have not heard anything

My D24 has a 1430 SAT and a 99+GPA and we haven’t heard back yet either. Its seems to have been mostly OOS students first and then NYS based students. Maybe this week and next week is the NYS based students turn.

SD

Then it could be just the geography of the applicant. My son has a reversed situation, but he has not heard anything either…
It is also quite possible that for such a large school they cannot afford to look very carefully at every application, and have come up with some sort of a weighted index similar to the famous AI (Academic Index) that is calculated for all recruited athletes. AI weighs SAT I, II scores and the class rank according to a semi-secret formula.

Anyone think EA harpur decisions will come out tomorrow? They released a bunch of decisions last wednesday.

Through the portal. The email is just to let you know they made a decision but if I remember correctly there isn’t even a link to the portal, you just have to go on it yourself and check.

From a current Binghamton student:

Admissions waves aren’t as predictable as you think. You have to keep in mind that admissions counselors have to go through applications for each college:

  • Harpur
  • Watson
  • SOM (School of Management)
  • Decker
  • CCPA (College of Community and Public Affairs)

Right there, that’s a total of five colleges with their own applications to go and sort through. These admissions counselors then have to offer students alternative college placings: for example if someone applies to Decker (as it’s difficult to get into), and gets rejected from Decker, admissions might deem the applicant eligible to be accepted into Harpur and offer them a spot there.

It’s a lot of sorting and organizing to go through, and I can tell you right now that they aren’t just looking through statistics. I’ve had students from my school apply with high stats that ended up getting waitlisted for the spring semester/rejected. It really matters if you have a strong essay, strong extracurriculars, strong grades, AND strong test scores.

Overall, if you believe you’re a strong applicant, you will hear back from admissions when they are ready to release their decision for your application. Most admissions counselors sit in a room, raise their hands, and decide whether an applicant should be admitted or not. Really just matters what college they are reviewing at that time.

FYI:
Keep in mind that you might not receive an email from admissions regarding a portal update. I ended up being accepted in the first week of December of last year and ended up finding my decision by checking the portal (never got an email). However, it’s not always good to constantly check the portal; it’s good to be patient and let admissions do their thing!!

My son has a 33 superstore 95UW, many AP’s and we have not heard yet, we are in state.

Has there been a wave for Watson EA applicants? I have a 1430 SAT (670 english 760 math) and a 96.7 GPA, have taken several APs, have a lot of extracurriculars, am in National Honors Society and I live in NY but I haven’t heard back yet, and I’m getting nervous. Was wondering if anyone heard about a wave coming out.

To clarify, bimghamton sends first out of state applicants, then in state is done by sat score, there is the occasional outlier, but the primary trend fits that. The latter responses are usually deferrals

would anyone say they do it by school as well? I have heard alot of acceptances from Harpur and Watson but none from the CCPA and the Pharmacy school

I have 35 Superstores, how’d she do on act?

My DS has a 1540 SAT Score- one sitting, a 33 ACT Score- one sitting, a 93 unweighted GPA, no class ranking done at our school, Honors and AP’s, and solid EC’s (star athlete, Honors musician, NHS, etc.). We are in-state and have heard nothing yet. I am perplexed and can only assume that his lower GPA, though unweighted, may be factoring in. If the decisions were based on test scores alone, it would seem to me that he should have received an acceptance by now. He applied EA to Harpur for Biological Sciences on a premed track. Who knows? Perhaps tonight will bring some long-awaited news. Fingers crossed…

My DD has a 1410 SAT score, one sitting, a 96 unweighted GPA, no class ranking at our school, Honors and AP’s, and strong EC’s. Visited and attended tour. Applied EA to Harpur for Poly Sci. We haven’t heard back either. Already accepted weeks ago to another SUNY and Pitt with apps sent at the same time. In state.

@Countrystrong11
Very similar here - but our school guidance team sent out a note yesterday saying EA decisions will be held back for some students until after ED day - universities will wait to see who got in ED and withdraw - so don’t panic.

Well, that could be a possible explanation…? Little do they know, he didn’t apply ED anywhere. We have acceptances from two other SUNYs, but Binghamton is his top choice. We’re starting to wonder what went wrong with his application and why he isn’t being selected for admittance at Binghamton. We have been analyzing everything! It’s definitely anxiety provoking to be sure. Thank you both for your input. It helps to know we aren’t the only ones still waiting. Do you happen to know when the ED Day is so we know how much longer this process could be drawn out?
