Binghamton requirements

At the end of high school, I will have fulfilled almost all of Binghamton's high school class requirements. The exception in that case would be foreign language. They require up to level 3 of a foreign language, while I will not take another language past level 2 Spanish. With that said, would Binghamton reject me just because I didn't fulfill their foreign language requirement? Should I even bother applying?

I’m almost positive that if you didn’t fulfill it in high school, you fulfill it in college as a gen ed, but I can’t for the life of me find the relevant info on the website. Can’t hurt to just call admissions and ask.

@rebeccar‌ alright, sweet! I plan on being an International Business major. I’ll be applying in the fall, so I don’t think a call would really be necessary. I’d have to fulfill the gen ed requirement regardless of major, correct?

Yeah, it doesn’t matter as long as you’re in Harpur. I’m still not 100% positive about the admissions requirements so don’t quote me, but I think it’s okay. My brother isn’t great at math, didn’t take all of the “required” math units in high school, and it didn’t seem to affect his SUNY acceptances at all.

@rebeccar‌ which SUNYs was he accepted to? And I assume Precalculus is the fourth year of math, correct?

New Paltz, Oneonta, Cortland, and Albany. He’s in a decelerated math program and he hasn’t taken trig or calc, definitely not the “standard units of college prep mathematics.”

It shouldn’t matter. You will still have a good chance of getting in, though it may hurt your strength of your application. I got in to binghamton with only taking two years of foriegn language.

@jakeydude95‌ alright, sweet! Did you have to fulfill a general education requirement? And when I apply, will the fact that Binghamton have accepted 90% of applicants from my school in the last five cycles play any role in whether or not I am accepted?

If you are going to concentrate in Global Management, which appears to be what Binghampton calls IB, note that you will need to meet their language requirements before graduation. Here is the link:

http://www.binghamton.edu/som/undergraduate-programs/bs-management/global-management.html

You will find this requirement in all IB programs. If the reason you are not taking language in high school is because you don’t like foreign languages, then International Business would not be the major for you.

No, they will not reject you because you didn’t fulfill your language requirements in H.S. I didn’t and i got accept, your going to be fine.

@blprof‌ I’ve had a bit of a struggle in high school Spanish tbh; after fifth grade, I didn’t take a single language again until last year, when I restarted Spanish. I don’t at all dislike it, just kinda found it a bit challenging

@Serbestofall‌ great to hear, I hope that would be the same for me!

A few questions: would I be able to pursue a sports-related minor at Binghamton? Also, what would be the best way to show interest during the application process?

Sorry to keep jumping into this thread but I don’t think we have any sports classes. All I know of is “Sports Writing” which is an English/Rhetoric class. I know we have an organization called BU Zoo which helps organize the athletic events- getting involved with that might be good.

@Ibad96 What do you mean by sports related minor? Do you mean something alone the lines of sports medicine? sports marketing, physical education? There are plenty of hands on internships working with our division 1 teams that you can get involved in. I’m an athlete at BU as well as I’m a doing sports marketing internship next year, so if you have any sports related questions you can ask me. To answer your second question, I don’t think there is a way to show interest. Just apply to the school that has the program you may be interested in.

@rebeccar‌ well, that may be good, but I don’t know about that class.

@Serbestofall‌ I was thinking along the lines of a sports studies or sports marketing minor. I would like to think that visiting before and after you apply would show interest. And also, is there a tryout for club sports?

@Ibad96 We don’t have a sports marketing minor per se but we do have marketing and there are a bunch of electives in marketing but you have to be in SOM and i know Econ has a few as well…those are in Harpur. I’m not really sure about tryouts for club sports because I’m a varsity athlete but i know for cheerleading you have to try out but for the running club you don’t have to. It depends on what club sport you do.

@Serbestofall‌ is it possible that I can create a major in the SOM called Global Sports Management?

@Ibad96 No, you either receive a bachelor of science in accounting or a bachelor of science in management with a concentration in finance, marketing, entrepreneurship, management, consulting and leadership, MIS, or supply chain management. First you have to be accepted into SOM and it is very very competitive.

@Serbestofall‌ would I have to apply to SOM first? Or could I just apply with Global Management as my major and not have to apply to a school

@Ibad96 You would have to apply to SOM first. You cannot declare a major in Global Management unless you are in SOM.
