birthday present for my boy..

this is a little bit of a challenge for me because he has different interests from mine..he's a total nerd (a cute one!) who is a computer science major & wrote articles and reviews for a nintendo website for years, while i stick to humanities and generally go out and party in my free time. :)

we both take french and tend to smoke the green from time to time. haha
oh, and he loves taking pictures with his digital SLR & smoking his tobacco pipe/cigars, two things i know fairly little about.

any suggestions? just looking for some more ideas, although i have a few things in mind. (nothing too, too extravagant..)

Ask your best-looking friend if she'd be up for a little "adventure" with you and your boy...

the default option for guys is usually clothes. At least if you can't think of anything else.

a cool new bong/a variety of flavored blunts
subscription to high times
an old school nintendo and some games for it
a stack of Polo or Lacoste polos in every color of the rainbow (this is what i got my bf for christmas...he doesn't wear the pink or light blue ones at all though)
cologne that you would want him to wear, even if he doesn't like the smell he will wear it all the time
a gas card (always handy and a universally appreciated gift)
give him a handwritten card instead of a store-bought one, he will keep it forever. a store-bought one would end up in the trash probably

easy:
thanks for the suggestion, but that was his christmas present ;)

nyu:
cologne would be a nice option..we once spent like an hour at a department store trying to find him one haha. although i'm partial to his simple old spice..
also he drives a diesel car (seriously like almost $5/gallon) so a gas card would be nice

i was thinking maybe a nice cigar cutter/lighter and a few of his favorite kind..

1st off, if you get him a lighter, make sure it is butane, not a zippo or something... normal lighters ruin the taste...

Old school nintendo stuff would be a good idea, a nice camera is another, maybe a subscription to Cigar Aficionado or a subscription to Popular Science.

I'd highly suggest not getting a gas or gift card of any kind, they are pretty impersonal.

If he collects anything, something he collects that is high quality

Easy's suggestion is good too...

If you have time to order online, go check out ThinkGeek.

It's full of toys he might like.

leah be my girlfriend

Does he like homemade cookies? I mean, who doesn't?

THANK YOU FOR THIS THREAD. NERDS ARE SO HARD TO SHOP FOR.

leah-- I'm not as demanding as lethargytm; you don't have to break-up with anyone... I'd let you just cheat with me.

nontraditional:
ahh! he's told me about that website before and i couldn't remember the name of it! thanks so much!

easy, lethargy:
he's gone all summer. i'm going crazy. haha
thanks for the offers, but unfortunately i'll be celibate until the end of july. tragedy.

if I had a gf who whittled me a pipe out of wood w/ the bowl in the shape of a heart or something (yeah I'm cheesy), I'd get down on one knee and ask her to marry me lol.

Do it.

haha yeah he probably would, too.

i slightly doubt that whittling is exactly my calling, though..

it would be a bad*ss skill to have, though. you know, to pass the time. or something.

Have you seen those fleece no-sew blankets (like http://knitone.files.wordpress.com/2007/11/img_0575.jpg)?

One year when I was low on ideas, I went that route. I made a huge one--3 yards, length-wise--and special ordered the fleece online so that I found some with a pattern that really fit his interests, rather than whatever a store might've had in stock. He didn't have a blanket, and somehow, it ended up landing a spot among his list of "Best Gifts Ever" (which wasn't just flattery...I've given plenty that haven't made any such list :p). Warm, cozy, personal, practical. Cuddly and "think-of-me"-y without being overly sentimental or feminine. Worked out well with my nerd.

Another year, I found the perfect present on Find Unique Gift Ideas and Creative Gifts - FindGift.com. It's not always good for exacts, but it's a nice idea-generator.

Good luck :)

i saw a sweet picture today of someone taking hits out of one of those old nintendo 64 controllers...if you can craft him something like that i bet he'd be stoked...it's like combining two of his favorite activities!

^ lol .

or make a nintendo (n64 or whatever) controller that works and works as a pipe. the controllers arent hard to make.

Or buy him an N64 off ebay. Better yet get him a sega dreamcast off ebay. not many people bought one when they were out.

he def. has (i'm pretty sure) 8 video game consoles.

..but none that also function as tobacco vessels hahah.
