I just got an e-mail from my community college’s financial aid office stating that they’re revoking my BOG fee waiver and that full payment for all units is due asap. I’ve been receiving the fee waiver for years, and I always have and still am qualified for it. I combed through my financial aid portal and I can’t find anything wrong- it still lists my fee waiver and Pell grant as accepted and paid out. Nothing turned up on Google when I searched for students in similar situations.
Maybe it’s a mistake, or even a hack. I’m hoping that anyone who received this e-mail or knows anything about this can chime in.
"We regret to inform you that your Board of Governors Fee Waiver (BOGW) is being revoked. As a result of updated information we have on file, you no longer qualify for the BOGW. You are now required to pay any fees previously waived by the BOGW.
You have 7 days from the date of this notice to either pay your outstanding fees in full or through a payment plan (if available) or you will be dropped from all your classes. You can view your Ventura County Community College District balance on your MyVCCCD student portal account. Payment can be made online or by visiting the Student Business Office on your campus. Check here for the payment plan schedule for Fall and Spring semesters:
I just got the same email too. I was trying to find out why it was saying that and same situation as yours. Everything is paid out. So I’m really confused
I don’t understand why I’m suddenly getting this email now. This is my last semester at my current college and I’ve never had this problem before so I am very confused and don’t know who to talk to or how to get to the bottom of this…
It must be a mistake then, can’t be a coincidence all of us got the same email. I did freak out for a bit though. Plus, it’s pretty sketch they sent it out at almost 3am…
@Student1291 I’m actually kind of relieved that you got the same e-mail and that I’m not alone. I’m guessing it truly is a mistake. Are you a student of the Ventura Community College District as well?
@TheatreArtist Perfect timing, right? They send this out on a Friday night. We can’t even contact anyone until Monday.
yeah I go to Moorpark College and I just got this around 2:54am, and I have been eligible for it. It doesn’t make sense during spring break this would go out. Especially at the end of spring semester.
Yes, very strange. I go to Moorpark as well and received this email. Only reason I can think of is that I am expecting a scholarship to be paid out soon. That is the only difference from previous semesters, although last semester I accepted funds from the same scholarship!! I really hope it’s a mistake…
@hitherto it could most likely be a hack. Or honestly it could be the lack of admissions this semester of vccc. and now ventura county districts way of getting money is by revoking our waiver half way through the semester. Pathetic
I bet it is this
“In order for students to maintain BOGFW eligibility, they must meet both the Academic and Progress Standards listed above.
In the future, within 30 days of the end of a primary term (Fall or Spring), the College will send a communication to those students who failed to meet the standards for two consecutive primary terms and will include instructions for how to appeal the loss of the BOGFW. This appeal is separate from any appeal for federal student aid, and the approval of one appeal will not mean the automatic approval of the other.”
When I was applying for financial aid one of my first semesters I orevuiyskt took a calculus teacher that failed basically his entire class so I was on probation status until summer 2015.
I had issues on my application ever since then in the school that said I was on probation even though I wasn’t. Which eventually had to manually get fixed.
It could be something went wrong this Friday. Seems off if they send something like that at the same time to people who are so far eligible.
Has anyone else been on probation within the last two semesters? That could be what is causing this.
So basically if everyone here has been on probation within the semesters with Summer2015 - Spring2016 it could be what is causing this. Which is incorrect on the schools part. But my assumption could be wrong too. btw probation is either you didn’t pass 70% of your classes which includes dropping classes. Both will put you under probation.
That would be extremely illegal for the district to do that to students on a federal level. The BOG waiver once used doesn’t get paid back, it isn’t a loan. So once it is given to us it shouldn’t be revoked at the end of the semester. the only reason they can revoke it is in the fine writing that if you aren’t passing you don’t get the waiver. Still doesn’t make sense at the end of semester to revoke it and make someone pay the fees.
@rachellee2 Hmm, I haven’t been on probation but I’m not surprised if this e-mail was accidentally sent out. The FA office is known to be shoddy. I used to get e-mails requesting documents that I already turned in, etc.
To lose the waiver you’d need to have a gpa less than a 2.0 for 2 consecutive semesters and basically not passing 50% of your classes… There’s no way this email is true. Guys I think we’re good, unless we all suddenly became wealthy enough to not need a waiver.
@hitherto yeah it was just a hunch. I’ve been having problems with the office pegging me for the one class a failed which is the first class I have ever taken with them, fucking calculus man. I retook the class and got an A, I still don’t understand what is so hard about filing paperwork. I’ve also had issues just getting to be a resident. Man this shit isn’t helping the insomnia. Yeah I hope this is some sick joke.
Anyone else transferring out? I thought it was possible that my graduating is the cause of this email. I have a stellar record but I do have over 100+ units at VCCCD. Whatever the case, I’m making some calls.
Let is know what happen. I certainly didn’t want to wake up at 4 a.m. to this. And I had work at 5. I go to moorpark and now I’m tripping out. How much am I gonna have to pay and why. And only having 7 days to figure it out or get dropped out of all your classes is nerve racking. Hope someone here gets answers to help out
