AHHHH! I just read some of these! The Pearl was a GOOD story! Dumb, but GOOD. How could i forget Pride and Prejudice? WORST BOOK OF ALL TIME! whoever bashed Their Eyes Were Watching God, that book is good if you can slodge through all the bad language. the first time I read it, i had a major migraine. Also, is The Hours any good? I've gotten halfway through. I like the way it's written, but it's so...dense, I have to reread every page 2-3 times to make sure I don't miss any hidden meaning. Is it worth my time to finish it?

For all of you who hate shakespeare- do you truly dislike him or just find him very difficult? Because for me, shakespeare is a next to impossible read. It's painful for me because of the language and the syntax. But I appreciate the guy, and he's one of the biggest ever influences on western literature. So I can't really hate him, even if he is so difficult for me to get through. You know?

1. Siddhartha is a great book. Period.

The thing about Siddartha, though, is that while it's a great soul-searching autobiographical sort of novel, it has very little in regards development outside of the character himself. While you can appreciate Siddhartha's spiritual growth, the reader places very little stake in what hapens and there's no one to attach to emotionally, you know? Which is why I wasn't terribly fond of it.

Agreed on Shakespeare, though (with the exception of Romeo & Juliet).

...omfg gawk

I really liked Watership Down but nobody else has ever agreed with me on that.

Heart of Darkness, hahaha I couldn't get past the second sentence of that mind-numbing crap.

I didn't really like Catcher in the Rye. It was okay, I guess..what was the big deal though?

Dickens = boooooring.

I also couldn't muster up the strength to read The Scarlet Letter, Wuthering Heights, or The Great Gatsby in school either.

I remember Johnny Tremain from 4th grade though....I think I liked it back then?

The Pearl sucked but at least it was short.

The Sound and the Fury is bad ... I didn't even get past the first couple of pages ... fell asleep :(

OK seeing all these people ripping on Catcher in the Rye hurts my soul but anyway, I would nominate "A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius" as a book that sucks. Eggers is so arrogant that I can barely read the book, the narcissism is so sickening. It's the type of book that quasi-intellectuals love to quote as their favorite book because it sounds intelligent, when in fact it is incredibly lame.

Yeah. It must be masochistic tendencies that keep me coming back to this thread. People keep mentioning books I liked!

Prep-- garbage, terrible portrayal of prep school life.
Most books by Steinbeck, I hate his style. Most notably:

Grapes of Wrath: Not garbage but too long, dull, and felt more like work than pleasure. Quality literature, though.
The Pearl:Hmmmm, this one was straight-up garbage.

And just to let everyone know, The Catcher in the Rye is my favorite book of all time. Holden may seem a little whiny, (I think that's a little exaggerated, though, I hear that complaint everytime searches for something to rip about that book) but try listening to emo music, or even your fellow classmates, sometimes.

I agree, Prep blew, clearly about Groton which is a lame school to pick for a story. The story just didn't really make sense either.

And in defense of Shakespeare, the reason his plots seem so predictable is because virtually every piece of cinema and literature of the past, well, every century since his death, have borrowed at least some element from Shakespeare's work.

I really dislike Shakespeare as well.
His books would be worthless without the way he uses and manipulates language, which some consider to be "just beautiful."
Well, I don't care for the language, so his books do nothing for me. The themes are common and overdone and the plots are juvenile at best.

Just because Groton sucks doesnt mean Prep sucks he did the best he could with such a suck subject.

Mr. Romantic, what a cute sn! I would normally steal it, but mrs.romantic sounds dumb

a few of the books i personally can't stand:

siddartha
catcher in the rye (sorry, i know this is some people's favorite book, but holden made me want to puke)
pride and prejudice, or anything by jane austen
anything by james patterson
the island by paulsen (from 7th grade i think, but i still remember how much i hated it)
april morning (was from 6th grade, couldn't stand it)

Ugh... anything by Hemmingway. I've never trudged through anything so dull in my life.

Also, An American Tragedy by Theodore Dreiser is 20 pages of actual plot spread out over 850... I swear that my AP english lit teacher only chose it as our summer assignment because it's not listed on Sparknotes :)

I'll get you through some Hemingway:

"For sale. Baby shoes. Never used."

Shortest short story ever written, courtesy of Hemingway. Now you can say you've read him.

jmarsh2006: bummer. i love sparknotes.

i thought gulliver's travels and sense and sensibility were boring. i stopped reading gulliver's travels when lemuel was on his last voyage. i read count of monte cristo during my freshman year...loved it.

anybody read lost boy by richard kim? great book about japan's occupation in Korea. though it isn't literature, it's a great way to understand what the koreans endured. now i have to find a book on the japanese.

since it's christmas break, i can't wait to buy more books. a borders just opened near my home. i'm sooo happy. you have no idea how i felt when i first heard it was going to be built. now i don't have to drive miles and miles to go the nearest store :)

^^^i know, irrelevant. forgive me.

you people hate bukowski? and dave eggers? and catcher in the rye? oy vey. this pains my soul.

HARRY POTTER SUCKS! The book is a fake. It copies ideas from different english novels such as LOTR (Lord of the Rings, which I completely like and is one of my favorites).

Pride and Prejudice --- If you like this garbage, you are a loser.
Jane Eyre -- see above.
Their Eyes were Watching God -- How the hell did this get published?
Siddhartha -- zzzZZZZzzz grab a pillow (last chapter was decent)
Harry Potter -- not a fan
