Boston College Class of 2025 -- Regular Decision

Sorry, just under $10K. Just relative to other schools it was about $15K

Thanks for the response. A $10K difference is a lot to think about! I really wish they could make the NPCs more accurate!

same - got WL at NU and BC plus a few others. Have some Accepts but in a typical year was solidly in the mix for an Accept from both.

Financial aid question (the current wait time when I called was 43 minutes, so I figured Iā€™d ask here in the meantimeā€¦) - my student qualified for a $3500 subsidized direct loan. Can she also borrow the additional $2000 to bring that number up to the $5500 cap on Federal Aid? Can they borrow $3500 subsidized AND $5500 unsubsidized? Iā€™m not saying we would do that, but Iā€™m trying to understand how it works.

Also, when a student qualifies for work study, do the earnings get automatically applied to the bill, or does the student get a paycheck?

What school in BC did she apply to?

Same exact scenario. But it still stings. What a bizarre year. Honestly, it makes no sense!

Yes, you can borrow $5500 total. $3500 subsidized + $2000 unsubsidized.

Fed work study is a job with a paycheck. It wonā€™t go straight to your bill. It is partly subsidized by the Fed government though.

work study is paid directly to the student

We didnā€™t filled out Fasfa since we donā€™t qualify for financial aid.

College of Arts and Science.

Thanks for clarifying.

Can schools (BC) be willing or be apt to consider scholarships offers to other schools (for consideration or leverage) ?

Perhaps ā€œyesā€ for highly-recruitable athletes at the undergraduate level, or for graduate students considering various Ph.D. programs. But this is an unlikely practice for the average undergraduate. Good luck!

Thanksā€¦

I was referring to the amount of aid made available at a few others schools, in comparison to BCā€™s offerā€¦ (just wanted to make sure I was being clear / clearer)

Itā€™s absolutely wonderful to be accepted ā€¦ (no complaints there), but financial burden is a concern for many ā€¦

Thanks again !

I agree with @foxmom111.
Merit scholarships are typically available from other (great) schools that are considered to be less selective than BC. We cannot ask BC to match those.
For financial aid, we can ask them to reevaluate but we should expect zero to no more than a few thousand dollars adjustment.

Aside from a very limited number of academic scholarships (Gabelli Scholars?), itā€™s my understanding that BC calculates financial awards based solely on financial information from the FAFSA and CSS profile (not merit-based) and will not match another schoolā€™s offer. (Iā€™m just a mom who has been reading way too many websites), so please always verify this kind of thing directly with the school you are interested in!

@OceanIsle based on Federal Student Aid

How much can you borrow?
Your school determines the amount you can borrow based on your cost of attendance and other financial aid you receive.

So not the full gov loan amount, itā€™s the amount listed on the letter.

The total amount you can borrow from federal is $5500. If they offered you $3500 subsidized then you can borrow $2000 unsubsidized for a total of $5500 (it should show that on the aid letter). Work study does not get applied to the bill - the student gets a paycheck.

Nope. By law, you are entitled to the full $5500. Itā€™s not up to the school. I know this, bc Iā€™ve done it each year for my oldest. You just fill out an override form thatā€™s readily available at the financial aid office.

What you arenā€™t entitled to is a subsidized loan. Thatā€™s up to the school. But you can borrow the full $5500 unsubsidized (or any amount under that).
