Good essays? but I guess not good enough Lol.

Thank you for the clarification.

No problem! Itā€™s a lot for families to try to navigate. Info isnā€™t always clear and I think itā€™s great when we can all share info, especially those of us who have been through it.

For those of you who donā€™t know, students are eligible for Federal (Stafford) loans in the following amounts:

$5500 Freshman
$6500 Soph
$7500 Junior
$7500 Senior

If you donā€™t take the loan one year, you cannot go back and ask for that amount later. These federal loans are generally lower in interest rates than private loans and are the only loans that donā€™t require a co-signer.

I know families who take these loans out as a precaution in case they need them, then just pay them back at graduation if they donā€™t. I know other families who have had their students take out only federal loans bc they want their kids to have some skin in the game. Some of those families gift the money back to the student at graduation, others donā€™t.

Every family must decide what is best and itā€™s an individual decision.

@OceanIsle Thanks again, this helps. I had a D in Northwestern, but we didnā€™t look at those amounts before.

This D got into NEU, BC and Wash U, with the latter 2 giving nothing and suggesting a small Subs-Stafford loan. Sheā€™s waiting for some reach decisions before she decides on these great schools as well. Sheā€™s on happy land, Iā€™m on the $$ island trying to wrap my head around these schools that donā€™t give anything. Versus some other accepts that are offering her good $. Ohh, and WashU has a ā€œgreat offerā€ that if you prepay all 4 years, you lock in freshman rates. :money_mouth_face:

Last year they accepted approximately 7500 students to fill those 2400 spots with early decision making up about 1000 of those spots. With an extra 10,000 applicants this year, the acceptance rate undoubtedly plummeted.

Last year we were offered about $3500 in subsidized and when we asked for the full $5500, they decreased the subsidized a little bit and then the remainder was unsubsidized. I donā€™t remember the actual numbers but I would guess the subsidized went down to $3000 with $2500 unsubsidized.

Ouch. Thatā€™s another thing. Most schools will raise tuition roughly 3% each year, sometimes more. Itā€™s something to think about. Iā€™ve never heard of a ā€œlock in your rateā€ offer like that though. Sheesh! :money_mouth_face::money_mouth_face::money_mouth_face:

WashU also conveniently offers their own Parent Loan ā€œthe only school or one of the fewā€ that offers that. Why would they want to offer aid when they can offer their own loan. A bit of a conflict of interest IMO.

i amā€¦ apparently didnt submit the 2019 tax returns

hi! the same thing happened to me with the missing tax returns even though they were submitted along with the fafsaā€¦ do you think we will still be able to get enough aid?

Did you apply for need-based aid and not get anything from BC?

yes, this happens all the time. just submit it as soon as possible and email your financial aid counselor if you have any questions! not sure why they never sent us any email/notifications about needing to send in more documentsā€¦

I doubt your aid will be reduced (I think this only happens if youā€™re like the LAST person accepted from the waitlist-but donā€™t quote me on that I truly donā€™t know)

apparently BC doesnā€™t use IDOC soo, oops

Filled out FAFSA, if thatā€™s what you mean by apply for need based aid.

For all asking about financial aid awards NOT showing up (due to potentially missing documents), I emailed my financial aid counselor and she replied:

ā€œNo worries, your eligibility wonā€™t be impacted by the late submission. There is no cut off deadline for financial aid applications.ā€

so calm down, itā€™s fine!

All great schools. Iā€™ve been to ND several times because my nieces are/have been in the marching band there. Amazing school, beautiful campus. I would say the one and perhaps only downside to ND is that it is truly in the middle of nowhere. My daughter loves having the city right there at her disposal while still being on a beautiful campus. My niece who graduated from ND last year already had a job lined up before the shut down (sheā€™s an engineer) but Iā€™m not sure if the job prospects are any different from those three schools.

Congratulations to all! D20 is a freshman (MCAS) who is having the time of her life (despite covid.) Happy to answer any questions!

What are admitteds seeing for merit aid or scholarships (not need based financial aid)? I read that the average merit award is like $20k at BC but none was mentioned in the admission letter or aid portal. Wondering if paying full freight is the norm here (if you donā€™t qualify for need-based aid).

BC does not offer merit aid outside of the Gabelli scholarships which are about 15 full ride offers.
