Boston University Dorms

Hey, I was recently looking at Freshman Housing at Boston University … I wanted to be close to the engineering college, fairly close to the rec center, and wanted to be around other freshman … can anyone recommend good dorms to me?

When I went there (25 years ago!) the Engineering Dept and the Rec Center were on complete opposite ends of the campus. But, of course, LOTS of new buildings have been added since then, and I wouldn’t want to give you bad advice.

Congrats & Good Luck to you. :)

Most Freshman live in Warren or West and I would suggest you live in one of those dorms. Warren is right in front of the ENG building, so I think it’s a perfect choice for you. The gym (FitRec) is on West Campus, but they’re actually building a new gym on East campus. So basically… Warren is a perfect choice for you!

They’re actually not building a gym on East Campus. However, I still think Warren is a great choice because it’s close to all of your classes and most other places on campus. I lived there my freshman year, and used the walk to FitRec as part of my workout!

How about a student who goes to CGS? Are they usually housed together or are they in the general freshman housing? Still trying to figure out the whole CGS thing as that is what D was accepted into. Just wondering if they are treated differently and not given preferential treatment.

I can see where this is annoying, but I was accepted to CAS and will probably major in linguistics. What are the best social dorms or the most central?

The most popular freshman dorms are West and Warren.
West:
-Newly renovated
-Better dining hall
-Closer to FitRec and Agganis
-Close to CGS, SHA, and CFA
-More campus-y feel
-More out of the way if you are in CAS, ENG, SED, SAR, ect
-Smaller (3 adjacent buildings, all with 13 floors with about 45 students per floor)

Warren:
-More centrally located (right across the street from CAS)
-Bigger (3 connected buildings with 14 floors of rooms, about 50 students per floor)
-Dining Hall isn’t as good
-More places to eat (Starbucks, Olecito, and Subway are right downstairs)
-Less sense of community
-Much older (the rooms and bathrooms aren’t as nice)
-Front door opens onto Comm Ave

There are other smaller buildings too, but these are the most popular.

I wouldn’t say that Warren has less of a sense of community. I think it depends on your floor.

Yeah I agree that it depends on the floor. Just luck I guess

Personally, I’ve always heard (and felt) that Warren often has more of a floor community because each floor has a common room. I always advocate living closer to where the majority of your classes will be too. If you end up with breaks during the day, it’s nice to be able to run home rather than have to hang out somewhere else. Besides, walking the extra few minutes to the gym isn’t usually on much of a time constraint and works well with the idea of going to work out.

so which one is close to COM?

Warren! Literally right next to COM!

Which one for SMG?

SMG and COM are on east, so when it comes to Warren v West. Warren is better.
The closest dorms to SMG are Hojo and Towers however, but you should really choose to live there only sophomore year. Warren is right next to COM, like literally right next to COM.

And yes, I would agree that the general consensus is that Warren has more of a floor/community feel to it

what about Towers vs Warren for SMG?

Towers is closer by about 2 minutes. But again, as a freshman, I would pick Warren.
