Boston University Guaranteed Transfer

I applied to Boston University EDII, got deferred then the guaranteed transfer. I am happy that I still have a pathway into BU, but I want to make sure it is feasible. It is non-binding and I would only need a 3.0 to automatically get into BU and the College of Communication. I do have another good option in Syracuse and Newhouse, so I’m thinking I might go to Syracuse then decide if I want to go to BU. However, after speaking with my regional representative, he told me that I should take more general classes instead of ones in my major. If none of my Newhouse credits transfer, then it would make more sense to go for the cheaper state school. What is everyone’s thought on this? If anyone has taken the guaranteed transfer from BU please tell me what you thought about it.

generally, the first two years of undergrad are geared towards general classes - so yes, state school would make the most sense. but, do not forget, Syracuse is one of the best, if not the best communication school in the country - are you sure you want to give that up? if I were you, I would give Syracuse a shot and if you don’t like it, you always have the option of transferring. newhouse is a great option - I don’t think giving it up is a good idea but it is your choice!

I think it depends on your financial situation and how much Syracuse has given to you in Financial Aid. Syracuse does have one of the top Communications School as does Boston University. BU doesn’t do merit aid for transfer students (I know because my oldest daughter transferred in her sophomore year). I would say if Syracuse gave you a lot of financial and merit aid then go to Syracuse. If not, it isn’t worth putting yourself into debt and you should go to the best school you’ve been accepted to that gives you the most money. The guaranteed transfer is non-binding so you have nothing to lose by accepting it. My younger daughter applied to BU as ED1 and was deferred and offered guaranteed transfer. She is going to UMass Amherst and accepted the transfer offer. My advice to her was send in the documents they need, get the 3.0 and see what they give you in financial aid. If it works and you want to transfer, then you have the option. If they don’t give you the $ you need then at least you are at a school that you are happy with. Good luck with your decision. Sounds like you have great options.

Thank you. I did not receive much money from Syracuse and none from BU but cost is not a big factor. I think I will likely take it since it is non-binding but I won’t anticipate transferring as I think Syracuse is a good fit, even if BU might be a better one.

When you guys viewed your decision, did it specifically grant you a “guaranteed transfer” or did it say “Should you remain interested in Boston University, you may consider the possibility of transferring to BU after two semesters of strong academic work at another accredited college or university.”

No it said I have guaranteed admission as a transfer student for September 2022. My friend who got rejected was not sure if she got it or not, but her letter had the blurb above and did not get it.

that was stated in the rejection letter
