So excited!
@TomSrOfBoston what do you think are the lowest stats that BU accepts the CGS students with?
Anyone got in with at 1250 sat score?
@NJMAN2500 I’d think you’d need to be legacy and ED to get in with 1250
my friend got in with 1330
@gherbss Was your friend admitted to CGS? Did he have a hook: URM, recruited athlete etc.?
Edit: According to your posting history your friend is you.
Can I appeal a rejection to Engineering?
Did anyone else get guaranteed transfer for fall 2020? If you did are you happy with it or consider it rejection? I got it and can’t make my mind up if I’m happy or not
@LAJ530 On what basis? Unless there was an error in your file such as placing someone else’s transcript in it the decision is final.
@wonderwomennnn You were rejected as a freshman. If you meet the criteria for transfer specified then you will be accepted as a sophomore.
Hey everybody! I’m super late to this thread but got accepted to CAS with:
3.75 UW/4.17 W GPA
1310 SAT w/ 18 writing (wasn’t required but I took it anyway); 27 ACT
8 AP’s (gov and econ count as two classes at my school, 1 per semester)
4 yrs AVID
2 yrs Key Club
2 yrs Link Crew (out of 2 yrs you can do it)
Kaiser Permanente Summer Intern
Alpha Kappa Alpha, So. Debutante
Lots of community service lol
Super excited to be accepted, BU is one of my top schools! Just wondering if I can appeal for more financial aid?? I don’t think my parents will be able to afford it if we aren’t able to get more financial assistance
Hey everyone! Just wanted to hop on here and get your opinion. I was accepted to BU which I’m stoked about but I barely got any financial aid and my parents have to sell their second house (well it’s an apartment) to pay. However I also got accepted to my state university with a full ride so I’m kinda torn on what to do. Do you think BU is worth the price?
which state school?
@lilcuddlebunny few things in life are worth “have to to sell their second house” - emphasis on have to. Were they likely to sell it anyway and this just moves up the timeframe? DO they have other assets but prefer to sell the house vs. cashing in stock? It may be they have lots of choices and this is the one they would choose. It may also be that they literally “have to”.
I normally don’t get in to the financial discussions as it’s very personal and so different per family. However, I would avoid situations that force or create "have to"s.
For those considering the CGS option, anecdotally S has a very good friend who is finishing up his junior yr. Not sure what major he has moved into from CGS but he loves BU. It was a little awkward at first as he got a job when his friends went off to freshmen fall semester…but he loved the London experience. He has had solid internships (business related with major companies in boston and NYC). He is from FL but will plan on staying up north upon graduation.
No stigmas to this program.
The CGS program sounds very similar to the NEU first semester overseas option with the exception of the start date. We have a friend who did it this year and it was a wonderful experience. He had a great time, made amazing friends through shared experiences and is able to attend his dream school. I think its a great opportunity and shouldn’t be looked at negatively. Just my opinion.
Re CGS - there are a few programs around various colleges like this. It sounds like a win to the students for me if the college concerned is where they want to attend/graduate to be honest - you may miss out on the full freshman experience (I personally don’t think this should define a college choice) but end up graduating in the major you want from the college you want anyway, when the alternative is rejection.
@lilcuddlebunny I think college really depends on the person, and the undergraduate experience is usually finding yourself and possible career paths and schools like BU can really help with that and help you get on track. That being said, it’s an undergraduate education. If you know what you want to do, or rather whether your desired profession needs an undergraduate degree or if you want to go to grad school, it can make the decision a little easier.
I’m in the same boat and because I know I have to go to grad school to be a lawyer I realized that it doesn’t matter terribly which undergraduate school I go to, but rather the opportunities I take advantage of and/or make for myself. Those are the things that will get me into a better graduate school rather than having an elite education.
On the other hand, if you want to get a job with your bachelor’s, the name Boston University will certainly help you get there and that’s just the sad reality. You can still work really hard at a state school and get the same job, but the opportunities likely won’t be as readily available to you as they would be at BU.
All in all, if you save your money you have to work harder to prove yourself and if you spend it, you might have better opportunities more readily available to you.
Then again, I’m 17 and still terrified of having to make this decision so I’d narrow it down to one school that you’d have to pay a lot of money to go to and your state school. Research their programs, contact alumni, etc. from both schools to help you make the decision. Also talk to your parents! See is you want to save the money from that second apartment for graduate school or if the investment is worth it. At the end of the day, you can do whatever you want you’ve just gotta put in the work.
Sorry that was long lol but good luck! I’m rooting for you.
I was disappointed to be wait listed.
I am picking myself up and I am going to find a way to re-present myself to BU. Given my acceptances at two top 15 computer science and engineering schools elsewhere I dont think I presented my portfolio at its best to BU…or perhaps they thought I would not accept an offer.
ACT 34 6 APs , 6 Honors Courses. 92% GPA in New York school system. My distinguishing feature is that I am undeniably a computer geek. I have taken 4 college level courses in computer engineering and design and scored in top 1%ile nationwide (Ugh, I’m english and I seriously hate bragging). My GPA slipped in junior year. Unfortunately I got distracted working 20 + hours a week on a software project (but hey…upside is that I have saved enough for most of my college tuition) Back on track with strong gpa this year.
I wrote a bit of an obscure common essay about how it was not about getting to the top of the mountain that counted but getting back down to the bottom. Anyone who has finished a very long very hard piece of coding that seemed impossible until the end will be able to relate. Also I like hiking. I had a more straightforward personal statement but I went with the obscure - it is after all , what I am about. I wrote a genuine essay about why BU? There was not a lot of room so I kept it focused on how I like the interdisciplinary nature of studying CS at BU…which is a major plus for me.
I have reasonable coding and math skills so I want to go to University to think about how CS interacts with the world. I really like history as well . BU’s CS department stands out because it does everything possible to stop you just becoming a CS geek…and geek though I am, I really like that.
For me, it is BU or bust! I just love the place. Its got really smart teachers and doesnt have the pretension of the West Coast schools. I have looked at my offers from California (2 good schools) and Illinois. I have to balance all this against a job offer from a three year old rapidly growing software company where I have been moonlighting as a developer. I look at all this …and I still want to go to BU…so Im not going to stop trying.
Since my application I have done a few new things, including getting involved in developing a digital class room tool and I think I can get a sponsor for a BU Spark project. I am just going to lay it all out there for admissions and tell them I am ready willing and able if something shows up, and see what happens. Please wish me luck.
Most of all I want to celebrate and congratulate everyone who got into BU. Truly, well done…you are going to a wonderful school where humility trumps hubris …and you are living in the coolest city in the world bar none.
I hope to find a way, almost any way, to join you. Look out for a Night Owl!
Oh yeah…I forgot to mention. I have been a die hard Red Sox and Pats fan since 4 years old…which is really tough surrounded by fans of the Evil Empire (yankees) and Giants fans. I was actually at game 7 vs Yankees (sitting ion my Dads shoulders) when the curse was broken. Going to school within throwing distance of Fenway park is a must for me .

Received no financial aid which was a bit surprising and will probably keep him from attending. Hard to justify the cost over Northeastern where he received close to 100k in scholarships/grants.
