Boston University RD 2023

No, I don’t. go read the latest article in the wall street journal named “The Right Way to Choose a College”

Advice? DD top 2 choices were BU & NEU and she is waitlisted at both. (She got flat out rejected at her 3rd choice.) She has what I (as the parent) think are really good other options at some other schools. So what is the realistic chance of coming off the BU waitlist? (On the NEU thread I was told waitlist = rejection because it’s so rare.) How about for BU? Should we try to gently prompt her to pick herself up and get into the excitement of one of the other colleges where she could do well (she has some very good options with honors college, $$, etc – I seriously think she could be happy at another school but she’s just very fixated on BU.) So basically still hang onto hope? And if there IS hope to come off the waitlist, what should she do? She already did write to the regional rep by email letting her know that BU is her #1 choice, she would provide any additional info that could help their decision, and if accepted she would enroll immediately. Thoughts? Thanks!

This is not true. In 2017 Northeastern was overenrolled and took no on off the waitlist. In 2018 they did admit students off the waitlist. This year of course no one knows at this point.

Thank you, Tom! So what do you think about WL at BU?

Search “Common Data Set Boston University” and you get lots of info including past years’ wait-lists. You can do this for any Uni. It looks like 7 made it off the WL last year and none the year before from what I can see. The odds look very low …

Accepted! 34 ACT, 4;0 unweighted, 3 varsity sports – captain of 2. Lots of EC

@flower123456 i’m not sure what the lowest CGS stats are but my daughter got into CGS with a 32 ACT, 4.43 gpa, 10 APS, president of school club and president of French honor society, coach of local youth soccer team for 2 years, member of school mock trial team, summer internship for 5 weeks working in London. I hope this helps.

I can’t speak to lowest CGS stats either, but my daughter was accepted into CGS, had a 33 ACT and 4.0 gpa with leadership positions in school clubs and outside activities. I think it’s pretty silly to think that any student is getting admitted unless they have a strong academic profile. There are plenty of students who would welcome the opportunity, including I suspect a number of the students on the waitlist. Sure, it would have been nice to have a Fall start, but she’s glad to have earned a spot at BU even if it means she starts a semester later, and she’s looking forward to the London semester. Since there should be around 600 kids in CGS, she’ll have plenty of company in adjusting to campus in January and plenty of other CGS kids who presumably will be looking to form friendships. As with all things, it’s whether you make the most of the opportunity or focus on what you didn’t get.

I think they now have CGS to lower the acceptance rate and not for weak students… most who get into CGS are top notch!

@Darby44

Well said!
My daughter was also accepted to CGS
OOS
ACT: 33
GPA: 3.85 gpa
Lots of leadership including ASB Executive Board.
Captain of Varsity Team
Definitely a top notch student like the rest that I see accepted into CGS. She is excited about London and is looking forward to connecting with the other students in this program. Congratulations to all accepted at BU.

@wonderwomennnn I got the same decision so I decided to call them. The woman from the admissions office said applicants who received “guaranteed transfer” were students who they wanted to be apart of the class, but the college you applied to was full. They’re looking for a diverse class, in cases like yours, they may have already accepted some who meet similar criteria. So I would think of it as an acceptance, BC you don’t have to apply you only have to maintain Bs and give them a yes or no at the end of next year.

Hi, everyone, this is my first post at CC. Daughter just got accepted to school of engineering. Since she applied to honor college as well, I am curious, does the decision of honor college come out together with admission decision to BU?

Class sizes dwindle every year. People drop out for various reasons. Guaranteed transfer, from what I understand, is basically we want you but we don’t have space right as of now. Waitlists similar, however, the waitlists are for students who they are quite sure of how the fit into the class they’ve created. BU allegedly hasn’t touched its waitlists in years. Now there have been cases were a student repealed the decision and been successful but it quite rare.

@bumalicious wow thank you!! at first I was disappointed with the decision, but the more I thought about it the more I started to like it. My stats were pretty low, so I was expecting rejection and I’m pretty happy to have received anything. It also makes affording BU a lot more doable. Are you planning on transferring?

Yes honors decision was on portal. It was under decisions.

Daughter was admitted to CAS and super stoked but did not get ANY sort of scholarship whatsoever so she, and we, are so bummed. We even got that neat packet in the mail today (sigh).
72K vs 24K at other schools; can’t fathom paying 192K extra for a degree in this day and age.
OOS 33 ACT (34 super score), IB diploma candidate, 4.7 GPA, top5% class rank, many EC’s and volunteer hours. It was her #1 choice. This is life. Congrats to those of you who were accepted; for those who did not, don’t sweat it. You are obviously a driven person and will be successful wherever you go… as will she!

@Darby44 @Kasmom My daughter was accepted with almost the same stats. 1480 SAT, 3.9 GPA, 12 APs, varsity swim, graduated a year early. Do either of you know if they put the Boston-London kids all in the same dorm and if so, which one? Is there a facebook group just for the ~80 kids in the B-L program? Thanks in advance.

@minka14 80 students? There are 600 entering students in CGS-London.
“How many students will begin their studies in the Boston-London Program?
Approximately 600 students will begin their first semester in January 2020.”

The 600 are broken up into teams of about 80.

@“whichcollege?” That is a big “team”!
