"Describe the world you come from - for example, your family, community or school - and tell us how your world has shaped your dreams and aspirations.

Out of all the places in the world, I was born right in the heart of Silicon Valley, arguably the most technologically advanced place on Earth. However my parents are first generation immigrants from India. Though they grew up in middle class families, the lack of material comforts did not deter them from seeking a good education and becoming engineers through hard work. Growing up, my parents instilled in me the value of good education, work ethics, perseverance, faith, family, and service to the community. I have and will always try to pursue these values.
Living in the Silicon Valley has given me a natural affinity to technology right from my young age. My parents regularly talked to me about their work and related it to what I was studying at school. Their encouragement kindled an interest in me pursuing a career in science and technology. My father had worked for a bio-tech company which developed medical devices for mitigating pain. He would demonstrate the device and explain to me how it worked. I also listened to the testimonials of the patients who had benefitted from those devices. My fathers research spurred my interest in the function of human body and brain as well as computers. Seeing how this field benefitted many peoples life, I knew that I wanted to go into the biotechnology field. To prepare for this, I took accelerated courses in my school, such as Chemistry Honors and Biology AP and am currently taking Physics.

My mother got me interested in the field of statistics. I became very interested in this field and took Elementary Statistics at De-Anza College. I am currently learning JAVA to pursue my interest in computers.

My family and church community taught me about my responsibility to give back to the community. My school gave me an opportunity to learn trumpet and I give back to the community by playing in concerts for band. As an experienced cricket player, I spent my time coaching beginners. I spent my summer vacation volunteering at the Childrens Discovery Museum of San Jose, a place where children could engage in creative activities. It was my responsibility to ensure that all the activities run smoothly. Though, at times my job was difficult, I always felt a deep sense of satisfaction that I had countless opportunities to serve others. My volunteering has shaped my aspirations. It opened my eyes to how I should use the things I am passionate about for the benefit of others. What joy would it bring to the world if I found the cure to cancer or HIV through my passion?

My experiences with my family, my church, my school and sports community has prepared me to face the future with confidence. I have learnt the importance of hard work, perseverance, and service. I have realized that pursuing my passion in bio-technology to find new ways to benefit mankind would be one of the best ways I can give back to my community.

"Tell us about a personal quality, talent, accomplishment, contribution or experience that is important to you. What about this quality or accomplishment makes you proud and how does it relate to the person you are?"

My heart was throbbing, my hands were shaking. No, it was not the day of a major test or a big speech. It was just my first day on the cricket field. As I entered the field, I had no clue that it would just be the beginning of an incredible journey.
I discovered that I was a natural cricketer and started representing the team in different championships. All the while I was able to work through my introvert nature and form lasting friendships. I learned to work with people and collaborate on strategies to win matches.
Since cricket was becoming my passion, I practiced very hard to hone my skills and become a technically sound batsman and a reliable wicketkeeper (or catcher). Since there was only one wicketkeeper position in the team, I had to work hard to be the best to retain my spot. The effort I put to become a better player taught me the value of good work ethics.

When I was in my eighth grade, I got a chance to tour internationally and emerged as one of the top run scorer and received coverage in Indias newsprint. I was also interviewed by the USAs online cricket magazine at the end if the tour. I gained a lot of self-confidence through this experience.

My self-confidence would later be tested the following years. When I was thirteen, I started training for a spot in the North-West regional team to participate in the USAs national Under-15 Cricket tournament. Though I was a good player, I was physically small of stature and the selectors who had not seen me play initially overlooked me for taller players and I was made to sit out in the initial trial games. This was a very discouraging phase in my life. My coach encouraged me to work on my mental strength and physical fitness and grab hold of the opportunity when I get one. I worked doubly hard to improve in those areas and was able to convince the selectors and made it to the team. Through this I learnt not to be discouraged by setbacks. I represented the North-West region the following year too. From then on it was my dream to represent my country through cricket.

Throughout my junior year, I represented Sunnyvale Cricket club in the adult league and won the Best Upcoming Wicketkeeper award that season. Finally that year, I was selected to be the reserve wicketkeeper for the USA Under-18 National Cricket team which was my crowning achievement thus far. I am very proud of this feat.

My experience in cricket has taught me not to be discouraged by obstacles and setbacks but to believe in myself and work hard and persevere to achieve my dreams. My journey in this sport has improved my character and taught me valuable life lessons which have made me a better person. I am confident that no matter what hardships I face, I will always strive to overcome them on or off the field.
