Boy's Schools-AOF, Salisbury, Trinity-Pawling, South Kent etc.

What's the take on these New England all boys schools? Certainly to some extent they are vestiges of a time gone by, but I understand they are also more popular than ever as some people recognize that boys and girls probably do learn differently. The all-girls schools (Miss Porters, Miss Hall's, Westover, Emma Willard etc.) are also seeing a significant resurgence.

Wondering what the brilliant minds on this board think of single sex as a boarding option and even specific thoughts about an individual school.

I would never go to an all-boys school. I want to be around both boys and girls when I learn.

Plus, I would think that it would be weird going from an all boys school to the real world and maybe some people couldn't adjust to it.

Someone whose son went to Salisbury used to post on this forum. If you do a search of "Salisbury" you might find what he/she had to say. I hear that athletics are very strong at all-boys schools. Because my son wanted coed, we never looked at any. I hear that AOF is a beautiful campus.

Having a single-sex education is a personal choice. For some children, it can be helpful and work well, and for others, it could be damaging. I personally would never go to an all-girls' school, because I enjoy the kind of "boy energy", as many psycologists call it, that boys bring to the classroom. However, I can see advantages both ways. It really depends on the person and their own learning style.
Before critizing single sex schools are isolating kids and preventing them from seeing the "real world", remember that many people feel that exact same way about private schools--and boarding schools even more so.

AOF does have a nice campus (I was there with daughter for a hockey tournament). They are an athletic powerhouse in many sports. In ice hockey I believe they have at least 4 teams.

AOF also has decent college placements.

georgetown prep is an amazing all boys school.. i wish i could go!! other than the fact that i'm a female, it's a great match for me..

single sex education isn't as restricting as it seems.. most students feel more community in that environment because they don't feel the need to compete for/impress/act differently around/speak up in class with the opposite sex around. it seems very nice, even though i've been one to not even consider it as an option (i prefer male friends to female friends.. and i couldn't imagine the extent of the cattiness 24/7).. but i'm not so sure about that. also, in terms of dating, many single-sex educated students are better prepared for dating because they learn how to approach dates that don't go to their school.. and they have more dances than coed schools..... i think it may be beneficial in the long run.

I feel the same way about Harrow and Winchester as you do about Georgetown, blairt. :) Not that if I were a boy, I'd be able to go, but still. :D

I visited a local all-girls school, and I didn't really like the school- BUT NOT because it was all girls. Just go for a visit- that really helps...

I don't think I would want to go to Georgetown Prep if I had the opportunity because I want to go to Georgetown SFS, but that will probably change, but still... it'd be weird to go to a university with the same name as your high school.

Since I go to a single sex school and know alot about Georgetown Prep (my brother almost went there...and I was looking at the "sister school") I figured I could point out some stuff about Georgetown Prep/single sex schools...

1) Ive found that any "cattiness" is actually much much less at my school, and as far as I know other all girls schools, because most of the time cattiness is because of some guy. So, by not having guys in the environment during the school day, everything is much much more pleasant/layed back/happy...

2) Georgetown Prep is a good school, but by no means amazing compared to other private schools in the D.C. area. It's very formal and most of their classes are supposedly very boring/includes mostly note taking.

GP is an amazing school. The end. It's up there with the big 4 (except it's all-boys and in the south).. average SSAT is 90%.. which is more than any DC school can claim. And they have state of the art athletics. It's a great school.. my grandfather went to Geogetown U and kept in touch with a lot of guys from the prep school. and he gave amazing internship to current students and alumni from there (doing real work at an international shipping company in world trade center)..that i would love. it has much more accredation than ANY boys school and ANY DC school. period. no matter how highly people think of their local day schools, it's the national honors that matter most, and GP is superior.

Blairt: you have just said so many things that are so painfully wrong on so many levels...:

A) what are the "big 4"? and since when does Maryland count as south?
B) I am so painfully sorry but I guess when I understood amazing school I thought you meant by lets see....ummm MAYBE THE COLLEGE MATRICULATION AND THE AVERAGE SAT SCORE??? in which case schools such as Sidwell Friends (Chelsea Clinton's school), St Albans (umm..perhaps where all the senators kids go) and even Georgetown Day School far surpass GP.
C) Since you clearly have too much time on your hands, I suggest you go to St Albans school for boys website and look at the college matriculation compared to Georgetown Prep. Or Sidwell Friends. Before you start acting like you know everything, check your facts. Also, you can ABSOLUTELY NOT SAY THAT "GP HAS A BETTER SSAT SCORE THAN ANY DC SCHOOL CAN CLAIM" SINCE YOU DONT KNOW ANY OF THE OTHER SCHOOLS SSAT SCORES THAT ARENT POSTED ON BOARDINGSCHOOLREVIEW.COM.
D) I suppose I'll have to tell my brother that he is going to the dumber boys school and that he was a retard for rejecting Georgetown Prep's acceptance. Also, Georgetown Prep does have state of the art athletics, however unfortunately their cross country program is a bit lacking these days...I suppose it's because ST ALBANS HAS BECOME MUCH BETTER at running.

well anyways, I suggest you check your facts since clearly you are completely and utterly ignorant.
Your right though, its one of the best catholic schools in the country (but I suppose that doesn't mean much.)

blairt, I strongly disagree that Georgetown Prep "has much more accredation than ANY boys school". More accredited that Eton, Harrow, and Winchester? And those are just three. Perhaps you meant in the United States, but even so, that's not a fair analysis to make, and it is not based on fact.

Indeed..
prettyckitty you are so diplomatic it astounds me (in a good way)

prettyc - yes, correct, of course i meant US. england whoops us in academics. ..and it was only baed on fact.

sp92-you're a very hostile person. my post was obviously a personal opinion (based on established facts).

the big 4 are exeter andover sps deerfield

based on school facilities and notable alumni and sat score, GP is still better
st albans SAT: 1300
SG: 1350

..still an opinion. i dont have time to list all the ways i think GP is better. it just is to me. it stands a chance to deerfield whereas the others don't really. it has boarding, the others dont (st albans has a meager program..not really a boarding school)
and i could care less where your brother goes. please don't use the word "retard". it's very offensive to those of us who are lucky enough to know the big hearts of mentally challenged people.

and again, with your insolence: be careful before you insult another religion.

I meant that I highly doubt you can say that Georgetown Prep is more accredited than any boys' school in the United States. Surely you don't know and have studied the figures and accreditation of every single boys' school?

of course not.. it's an OPINION (based on facts listed above).

Actually blairt I am not a hostile person at all, I am a person that gets very angry when people that pretend they know everything tell me that Georgetown Prep is superior when they don't have any facts. I don't really know where you got the sat scores, but they are quite out of date.

Besides, I'm sure that most people will agree that college matriculation matters a great deal, therefore I strong urge you to look at this ranking by Wall Street Journal of the top boarding and private schools in the country based on college matriculation to the ivies and 3 other top colleges.

http://webreprints.djreprints.com/wsj_tuition_040104.pdf

you will note that National Cathedral is tied for 5th along with Andover, Deerfield, and Dalton, St Albans is 8th, and Georgetown Prep...well Georgetown Prep doesn't seem to have made the list. What a shame.

It's great that you have your own OPINIONS, yet by saying that Georgetown Prep has far higher ssat scores than any of the other Washington Dc schools is just plain pathetic, and you CLEARLY don't have any evidence for that.

So I suggest you post your silly opinions some where else, and perhaps get your facts straight too?

he who cares wins.
