Break a leg, everyone auditioning this weekend!

Who's auditioning where? My son is auditioning for Ithaca near Washington, DC (one of the few schools to come here).

Boston University (straight acting) for us tomorrow. Good luck with Ithaca! My son auditioned on campus last month and really enjoyed the morning!

BoCo on Sunday. We were scheduled for last week, but my D got pneumonia on New Year’s Day. BoCo was kind enough to slip us in this weekend, even though they were full. My D’s voice is not 100%, but it’s a heck of a lot better than last week!

Times3, have fun today! My kids have a lot of friends at BU and they all LOVE it. And prodesse, we are doing Ithaca (and Syracuse) next weekend on campus. We’re hoping the weather gods keep the snow away, because it’s a 5+ hour drive for us.

Break legs everyone!

Good luck to your daughter tomorrow, monkey13! We’re hanging out in Starbucks across from the CFA waiting for go-time…nice, chilly, gray day–very Boston! :)

Not an MT parent, but a techie one. Still, “BREAK LEGS!” to all the kiddos auditioning this weekend and calm wishes sent to all the parents!

Let the Breaking of Legs begin!!!

Best wishes for safe travels, awesome auditions, lots of offers and options, but most of all, wonderful bonding moments!!! Enjoy the journey!!!

I’m a new member hear. My son is a HS senior and wants to do musical theater. As I read through some of these threads - I am feeling like we may be soooo far behind and unprepared. Yes, we have applied to a mix of “audition in” and “audition not required” schools, and he has had voice lessons for the past two years - but I am seeing so many posts with people who have coaches, etc. Actually I am thinking I am kind of glad I didn’t find all this sooner - or I may have become too compulsive about it all. Oh well, guess we will see what happens from here. His first audition is next Sunday, the 20th (a $ audition - audition not required for this school). Unfortunately it is going to be a rough day - since he made the CMEA Northern Region music festival in CT and the performance is the night before. We will have to leave very early Sunday morning to make the audition.

I hope everyones auditions went well this weekend.
Any reports on the first weekend at CCM?
My son is auditioning for UMich and CCM next weekend.
Oh boy… My stomach just flipped:)

Does anybody else have a kid who simply refuses to talk about how an audition went? It drives me crazy but I know it must be horribly stressful.

Monkey13, don’t worry about the weather. One nice thing about CNY is we know what the heck to DO with all the snow when it does fall. Roads are clean (esp. 81 and the Thruway) before you know it. We live near SU and drive to Ithaca every week for private lessons and the roads are almost never a problem. And anyway, the two feet of snow Syracuse had all melted this past weekend. Good luck on the auditions!

md311mt - my son auditioned at CCM the first weekend (Dec 1, I believe). 65 auditionees; the whole process ran very smoothly and no one seemed rushed. I’ve heard of only a couple of acceptances - a few placed on hold and most rejected. They said they are taking approximately 20 this year (total; 10 of each gender) for MT. My son was initially placed on hold and then rejected (letter arrived on his 18th birthday). I’m really relieved actually because of the infamous CCM cut policy and I did not pick up a good vibe from the environment at all. I know many think it’s the top of the heap, but I’m actually glad my son has some other choices…just not the right fit for him I don’t think. Also, the school is located in a very bad part of town - while we were there for the audition there was a murder just off campus and the police had the whole area wrapped up in yellow crime scene tape. I know those things are expected in a really urban environment, but I will admit this was not a really welcoming sight for the out-of-town visitor. Since then, my son has auditioned for Point Park (really liked their vibe!), Emerson, Ohio Northern and Rider – coming up is Shenandoah, Roosevelt, Boston, Hartt. If your son passed the prescreen at Michigan, he’s really talented – so best of luck to you guys! One thing is for certain - this process is not for the faint-hearted! Keep us posted!

md311mt - Looks like my son and yours are on the same UMich/CCM schedule this weekend. I just checked and the weather looks pretty good for both locations. Sorry to hear about that CCM situation. We visited last year and the neighborhood was a bit sketchy but once inside the campus it felt perfectly safe. Other than the campus location we got a good vibe from CCM and saw “Into The Woods” which was wonderful. I’ve heard many more “cut” issues about Emerson.

alexmariejp, that’s nice to know. Because of course, the weather forecast changed, and now it is supposed to snow. The whole time we are driving there, auditioning there, and driving home. Can’t wait. It says just snow showers, but I don’t believe it for a second. ;)

Yes we also are aware of situation at Emerson :frowning: but son had it on his list (like CCM) from the beginning anyway. Things like that will certainly factor in to any decisions made at end of this process. My son’s voice teacher is a CCM alum and he really loved it there. Best wishes!

Sending lots and lots of break a leg wishes to those auditioning - and to those along for the ride! It’s hard for me to believe it’s been 3 years since we went through the process. But here was my D’s status update on Facebook today - “Only 3 semesters of college left. Let’s make it count, y’all!” Hang in there and know that those of us who have gone before are sending tons of good vibes your way!!

PelkyAgain…feel free to email or PM me closer to your leaving and I’ll let you know what the Michigan weather is like. I’m only 45minutes at best from UM. This morning was suppose to be icy with snow showers and nothing. Between worrying about kids getting sick then the weather I’ll for sure have an ulcer before this is all over. We’re heading to Shenandoah on the 25th for my D’s first audition and I’m hoping for easy weather travels.

as far as CCM goes my D did not get a great “vibe” from it either last year when we visited. Being from the Detroit area urban doesn’t bother us but the area did seem to be the sketchier side of town.

Thanks for the update mcpcwhite. Yes, it’s not the best part of town.
We visited last spring and although the area was sketchy, my son was excited to be surrounded by all that music. What a facility. He had a friend who was a senior there and she gave us a wonderful tour. We saw the senior showcase rehearsal and it was impressive! Sorry about the no but it sounds like it’s for the best in your sons instance. It’s a different kind of program for sure and definitely not the best choice for a lot of people.
Yes PelkyAgain. The weather looks like it is going to hold but you never know around those lakes! I think our boys also work with the same coaches. If you’re the sherpa I’m sure we will be seeing a lot of each other:)
Sending good wishes to everyone this week and always…Until it’s finally over!

broadway95 – we are heading to Shenandoah this weekend (Jan 19) for S’s audition. He’s excited to see their campus and they are doing a production of Spitfire Grill while we are there. That area of the country is really pretty and I have to say, their personnel have been super to deal with. md311mt – thanks for the good wishes and I have to say I am truly in love-hate relationship with this process. I hate the stress of waiting…but am loving the time I get to spend with my son. It is an exciting time and a time of maturing and opening up to the future plans in store. What a ride!

prodesse, a belated answer. My D talks about the audition if she feels like they went well, but doesn’t talk if she feels like it didn’t go well. So I am there with you some of the time. I think you have to let the kids tell you what they want, and if they don’t want to talk about it, let them keep it inside for awhile. My D usually comes around and talks after some time has passed…it’s almost like she has to process it internally before she can express it to someone else. Yes, it’s frustrating, b/c as parents, we just want to know what happened, and support them regardless of what happened. But they have to deal with it their own way. I have also found that my D will open up more to her coaches than to me when she had a rough time at an audition or master class, or just when she’s feeling insecure. I think that’s b/c they are the professionals…they know what to say, they know better how to interpret things that have happened. And, there have been times when my D is insecure or upset about something, and I have been the one to contact her coaches and say, “Can you please talk to her?” She gets mad at me for “bothering” them, but she ALWAYS feels better after a pep talk from them. Or even just a reality check. I’ll take the help wherever I can get it…it doesn’t have to be from me. And sometimes I see her confide in her brother, who (luckily) is very supportive. So, I think as long as they are getting feedback from somewhere, they’re good. I guess I would be concerned if they were internalizing everything and not talking to ANYONE, b/c who knows what is going through their heads? Bottom line: they are going to be facing rejection and self-doubt their whole lives in this business, and we aren’t always going to be there to be their sounding boards. If they have a healthy attitude (e.g., if they made a mistake, felt the did badly, and can pick themselves up and brush themselves off and move on), they will survive.

My S is doing Mich this Friday the 18th and CCM on Saturday the 19th. I know - insane. Anyone else doing this? We have limited weekend availability right now and this was a way to knock off two with one big trip.
