Brown Application

wow, I totally missed that or I would have answered. Yeah, I am pretty sure it is acceptable. The web site lists a bunch of possible formats, one of which is word, it also says you can put it in anything they can read, and lists some file types I have never heard of, so your safe.

yea that way you can have formatting and stuff... i dont know what else you would submit via email (unless you made your own webpage or pdf or something, but who does that?)

speedcubing does indeed involve rubik's cubes. ddr is also big at brown (not as big as video games, but we like it - i love it hehe). you definitely don't have to be, like, "down with xxx" to fit into brown haha. there are plenty of "normal" people (to the amount that everyone is slightly strange in their own way). there are also plenty of ridiculous people. you will be fine. GOOD LUCK TO ALL!!!!!!! :)

I thought I was interested in Brown, but now I'm having reservations. The speedcubing, D&D, Star Wars activities is NOT at all what I was hoping for. Sounds like there is a deliberate intent to be counter-culture at Brown?
Is this true? Some of the older threads say that staying at Brown is "social suicide", is this true?? I might want to contact them today to cancel my application to Brown. I'm preppy, outgoing, conservative, I wear pearls, and sundresses, and I'd love to dress up for a football game!
Can someone please comment?

From everything that's been said about dorms/residential colleges, I think you fit the Old Dorms stereotype.

Thanks for responding Joanee. I have to agree. Now I have to find a way to rescind my application to Brown. Best to you!

Brownies don't cosplay, do they?

"I'm preppy, outgoing, conservative, I wear pearls, and sundresses, and I'd love to dress up for a football game!"

Man, you would hate Brown. Oh, and everyone in Brown would probably hate you too.

powderpuff: i dont really think that if you are against living with ppl who have different interests than you do that you would fit into brown. you can still edit your housing app right? just put brown at the bottom of the list or something and you wont get put there.

upoh: IM COSPLAYING for the activities fair in the fall... i will look like this: http://whiteout.up.seesaa.net/image/mikuru.bmp and um this one girl dressed up as a sailor scout for halloween http://photos-541.ak.facebook.com/ip002/v48/87/47/6111185/n6111185_30972541_5165.jpg also for the anime club we had a cosplay contest and i thought ppl were gonna ask me why i was dressed weirdly when i was walking around brown printing stuff out in the comp lab etc (my hair was like this: http://robkelk.ottawa-anime.org/meganekko/cyprine-1.jpg not even kidding) but really no one thought anything of it, it was really funny actually... it is great when you are so weird, yet you are not even close to the weirdest person you live with.

another thing is we have these banquets and ppl like to wear funny costumes to them... like for the first one our officers dressed up as starving artists and one had taped over her ear, etc.
basically think of it this way: not everyone in brown does this, obviously, but you dont look down on anyone who does something weird, you either do it too or laugh at it as being "typical brownies being brownies" or whatever.

Thanks for your comments Untitled. Maybe I should feel insulted, but I don't. I am who I am, and it is better to know this now. I do wear pearls and sundresses, but I chose these terms for my above note, because others had specifically used these words to describe the "old dorms". I'm gonna rank McCormick my first choice. Brown's just not for me; I liked it a lot for a little while though!>>>Oh, there's that pesky exclamation mark again!! Can't wait to wear my nice Lilly Pulitzer dress to the first home football game!!
In all seriousness, I need to cancel my application to Brown. How can I do this so that I don't waste everyone's time.
Thanks, really.....

Hmmmmmmm, interesting,.....this has me thinking .......

first, i just want to say that the way you dress is not the reason you would not enjoy living in brown. we have a few people who are in frats/sororities, that dress up (i dressed up for the 1st foorball game + loved it), etc. however, the fact that you look down on ppl who do not do the same and would have an issue living with them/making friends with them without feeling above them is why you will not fit into brown.
cancelling: you could email our membership chair, david gassmann. you can find his email by searching on the uva home page for people (the default option) in the little box. http://www.virginia.edu/

Well, my comment was more tongue-in-cheek. I wouldn't dismiss anyone based on that but I would think they were weird if they couldn't laugh at themselves and the inherent geekiness of cosplaying. I have my own nerdy behaviours, they don't extend that far, but I love being with people who can laugh about themselves and get along with others without complaining about aspergers.

"the fact that you look down on ppl who do not do the same and would have an issue living with them/making friends with them without feeling above them is why you will not fit into brown."

Completely agree. Alluding to unititled's post above, however, won't Brownies, at least those '50 or so' hardcore ones harbor a similar baseless condescending view?

well there are 2 different types of these ppl
1. is the snobbish elite type that i just try to get along with anyways
2. are the officers who are super weird and everyone loves

oh, man, i laugh at myself all the time. i know i am a super dork haha. i tried to be somewhat normal for the 1st month of school and then i quickly realized i could be ridiculous and ppl liked me more for it i think haha.

Haha, yeah, I never doubted that, you seem really cool. If there's more people like you around, I would enjoy Brown. Freaks & Geeks was on of my favvourite shows growing up and I used to love the latter, but I am equally 'normal' too. I think not applying to Brown was wise for me at this moment. I just hope that cool Brownies won't be adverse to making friends beyond Monroe Hill. Which, by your indication, is likely. :)

I'm sorry if I've given the impression that I look down on anyone; that's certainly not the case. But people, understandably, are looking to find those that they connect with. I didn't see that happening for me at Brown. There are lots of great reasons to be at Brown and I can see on the site that there's a strong, good group of students that find it to be just perfect for them.
Of course I am jabbing at myself when I mention the "Lilly Pulitzer" dress. I knew there'd be a true groan from the Brownies out there--and I was egging them on. Yes, I am laughing at myself! I'm a prep-monster who should probably be at McCormick. Brown has an allure too. I love the history, the residential perspective, the fireplaces, the location, the freedom of style! Oh well, what can I say?
And, I agree with Upoh though; the above posted comments can be viewed as a two-way street.

i do want to invite any of you who are interested in getting to know brownies to eat in our room at newcomb dining hall - in the past this has been a sticky issue as ppl think no one but brownies can eat there... not true! it helps if you are with a brownie, and dont come as a pack of ppl using up our chairs and not talking to us. but if you come and sit in the brown room and introduce yourself and want to get to know more about brown, very few brownies would snub you for that and most would love to talk to you. i bring a lot of my anime club friends all the time and they sit there knowing i will be there now and so that is the best way to get to know what a diverse, crazy, awesome group of ppl most brownies are. :)

powderpuff, I would advise you to like in old dorms for ayear, but don't shy away from Brown entirely. If you really meet some cool people there, and realize that it isn't a house that consists of only dorks and geeks, then you can apply for the next year, no big loss.

I have a feeling this thread is going to turn into huge deterrent for future possible Brownies, and I don't want that to happen.

I wouldn't take the fact that people like to play video games and a couple do rubik's cubes bother you, or the fact that some of the people are really into anime. I'm not a huge anime fan, I have a lot of friends that are and there are a few good shows, but you won't see me cosplay. I also don't play DDR or WoW (though I do play TESIV: Oblivion, and guitar hero which is only one step down...). And guess what? My favorite store to shop at is Express. I wear button ups and own more sweaters than Bill Cosby, so appearances can be deceiving. I am also a musician and a bit of a music snob, I listen to jazz and indie rock, mathrock/mathcore, and emo/screamo.

Why do you care? you probably don't, but it gives you an idea of who I am. I am also a moderate conservative who leans libertarian at times (which is pretty obvious if you read my comments on the "is it true..." thread), but what I want you to get out of it is that Brown is a place where you can be yourself without getting looked at with a o_0, as long as you don't mind some people who may be very different from you. As a friend of I and hazelorb said when I spoke with her about Brown "there is a lot less of the typical sorority types at brown" she actually used a word different than types, but you get the picture. Other than that, I think Brown is just a place you can go and be yourself without getting looked at wierd, so typical sorority frat people are scarce because they usually don't want that, and there are a lot more people that are straight edge or don't drink

<---A non-Brownie who ate at the Brown room at Newcomb many a time without a glance from Brownies his entire first semester

I have to put my one cent in (put the other in an argument that Harry Potter is not a horcrux).

I am a former Old Dorms denizen in a fraternity and yet I am an anime-watching E-Schooler. I cosplayed only twice in my life, once as a famous pirate for a pirate party and another time for Halloween. I am a member of the anime club, CAINE, with hazelorb.

I don't fit a mold of a stereotypical frat boy, but I am close with my brothers. We have six pack swaps, open barbecues, and parties. Our group is always half and half on football attire. I prefer an orange tee and jeans over a dress shirt and slacks.

Brown, like other On Grounds residences, has it's own flair. Old Dorms has floors of very close friends who go for a game of Ultimate in middle of the night. New Dorms has suites that become close-knit families and enjoy random bands in Tuttle. Hereford is a cloister...period. Brown has it various activities throughout the year that everyone can enjoy. I always go to Hauntings every year, I enjoyed last year's production of Rocky Horror, and I love the hospitality that hazelorb and other Brownies show when I come over. Brown does some weird things that I don't understand like Strip Battleship, but it's lovable.

You can only choose where you want to live. Keep in mind that you can visit anytime.

some great posts above me :)
ps, "malex" my friend and i watched haruhi eps 7-14 (broadcast order) straight last night rotf.
