Brown Class of 2023 Applicants Discussion

@barbietingz12 because the email is an official communication from the admissions office. Why wouldn’t they say something nice about the letter since someone took the time and effort to write it. Common courtesy at a minimum.

@vpa2019 but idk calling it great implies that they took the time to read it + thought it was worthy of a thank you. that seems to go beyond common courtesy – like u can thank the recommender/confirm receipt w/o saying that it’s good / will be v useful in committee (esp bc those things are not true of all supp recs). obvs not any sort of guarantee, prob doesn’t mean v much, i just don’t think everybody gets one

Here’s a really interesting link about Brown’s applicant pool, it also confirms the March 28th date for decisions. Enjoy!

Hey there! I opted for the video portfolio instead of the interview because I thought it might give me a chance to introduce myself directly to the admissions officers. Anyone else that also chose the video, what kind of things would it be good to discuss? Should I just elaborate on my extracurriculars and talk about some important experiences with them, or should I bring up things not mentioned in the application?

@benanderson1001 My daughter also opted to do the video. She decided to talk about something she felt was underrepresented in the other parts of her application. I don’t know if that’s the correct thing to do but wanted to share our experience.

Hey everybody! I applied to Brown RD this year and some of your stats are quite intimidating! However I will also share mine! I believe I am a qualified candidate but please let me know if I stand a chance in this tough year!

Class Rank: 7 out of 298 (My highschool is pretty bad! Maybe one or two students go to top schools every two or three years!)
GPA: 4.55
SAT: 1360 (M 690 E 670 Wr 16) (June 2018)
SAT II: Took them once did not send. Did not even know about them until it was to late.
ACT: 31 (M 28 E 31 Wr 31 Sc 33 Essay 7) (October 2018)
APs: AP English Lit / AP Psych (Online) / AP Bio / AP Physics 1 AP Calc AB AP US Gov and Pol
Honors Classes: I have taken Honors since my freshman year. However I didn’t have any big aspirations my freshmen year so I only took one. Also my high school did not let me take more and gave me easier classes because I came from a different school. So I had to play catch up and double up in math or science courses. I was not able to take Chemistry during High School because of this unfortunately because I did not have room in my schedule due to other courses filling up the only periods it was available. Also none of the chemistry teachers in my school can actually teach so I’d rather learn it from a capable professor.
Extracurriculars: Model UN club (Co-President), American Red Cross Club (Secretary), Track/XC (Co-captain), Pre-Med Club (Treasurer/Secretary), Civics Club, Student Council, Biology Club, Yearbook, NJ Boys State (Which I heard is one of the best!), NHS. I have a part-time job too
Volunteer Activities: I volunteered with veterans, at my local elementary school, hosted various events such as blood drives, and races for charities!
Personal Statement: I believe this will really help me out! I’ve had multiple people cry while reading it and I use some clever metaphors and such in my essay!
Supplements: I believe they were pretty good especially my last one! No teachers read them as I wrote it during winter break because I was really anxious about writing them. Brown is my top choice and I wanted to put my best foot forwards!
Recs: I don’t know at all. My counselor quit during the school year and I was paired with a counselor I didn’t know at all. We’re close know but not when she wrote her rec I didn’t get to read my teacher’s recs either!
Interview: My interview went so well! My interviewer said I had the best answer for why brown he has ever heard!
Extras (IDK if they will help lol): First generation college student, immigrant family, Muslim, Bisexual
Income Bracket: 20,000

That is my resume! One other girl at my school is fighting for Brown against me and I am nervous. She is a really great candidate but I believe my supplements were better than hers! I had to figure out everything by myself so it was a really stressful experience! Good luck to the RD applicants! And congratulates to the ED applicants, I hope I can join you!

Regrets: I wish I had studied for my SATs/ACTs! I was in a really dark place my sophomore, junior, and senior years! However I wish I could have gotten out of my slump!

@Gremlin_King best of luck to you! Hope you get accepted!!!

Did anyone else have “Final School Transcript” appear in their portal suddenly? (i.e. added to checklist)

Not my DS’s. Sounds like a good sign for you!

@skieurope is that indicative or anything?

No. I’ve said many many times here that there are no hidden Easter eggs.

@chunkylegs mine not yet

@chunkylegs Nope

@chunkylegs The reason for the AdCom to do that may be good or for another measure as well. You never know.

Isn’t the final school transcript coming out in May-July for most schools? There’s no way its comin’ before decisions fro any school thats for sure.

@chunkylegs I dont have it.

@chunkylegs Just curious, what was the date for the ‘final transcript’ notification on the portal checklist?

@ilovebennjerrys That’s the even odder part, it says it was received 2/7. Clearly some kind of error going on, but since final transcripts would only be required of accepted students, I was hoping it was someone checking the wrong box in the back end of the website or something.

I wouldn’t think Brown would tip their hand like this on purpose…basically, I am a champion when it comes to overthinking and grasping at straws!!! :slight_smile:

Check common app @chunkylegs could your gc accidentally have put in a final transcript?

@MyGPAIsAnL We had that thought too and checked, but nothing was sent and nothing has downloaded by Brown recently. DS’s school is on trimesters, actually, so 2nd trimester report isn’t even ready yet (will be end of this week).

@chunkylegs The 1st step is to contact the AdCom to inform them of the situation. They can work it out very well.
