Brown Class of 2023 Applicants Discussion

@LLAMALOVER101 I’d agree with the 'getting deferred, yet getting an LL part, since getting an LL definitely means getting in early due to the apps overall strength and fit (determined by the adcom).

THat doesnt mean its fake. Unless closely inspecting the format/content reveals otherwise (especially comparing it to past years LL’s).

Sure seems like a lot of stress. Why not just call admissions and ask them? If you received a LL they’ll have no problem confirming the information. If they didn’t send one, well then you’ll know.

@STEMGirl19 Makes sense.

Calling isnt feasible for everyone though (mainly due to time difference). But emailing them works just as good.

Thats actually a true sense of verification.

I emailed admissions today. I’m p sure it’s real lol.

@LLAMALOVER101 It very well could be, but everyone else’s arguments against it are also compelling.

THe only definitive factor would be knowing what the AdCom has to say about this. Do tell us if you hear back!

Calling makes sense.

So you are going to contact them questioning the validity of a likely letter? What do you think that will suggest about your self confidence and or your confidence in the admissions office at Brown.

So what is the outcome that is a win…

Option one: Yes of course it’s real we Bruno admit people aren’t idiots, should we be concerned based on your insecurities. How will this person respond to an open curriculum at a highly competitive school of getting accepted is to complicated.

Option two: Its a fake so what type of friends do you have that would do such a thing and boy are you gullible. Noted by Brown admissions.

Option three: It was sent in error. Thanks so much so we can now retract it before we sense a greater sense of obligation. Hell you didn’t even think yourself deserving so retract.

Accept it as good news, exhale and move on. If it looks, reads and sounds legitimate do not listen to a bunch of stressed out 18 year olds and act like a stressed out 18 year old. Be confident in that you are deserving of the letter and only question it if needed in response to a very unlikely rejection down the road assuming it’s legitimacy.

@Nocreativity1 Fair points. I didnt think of 'em.

Its upto the receiver to take the risk.

But tbh, its fairly doable to determine the validity by looking at the design and content.

I emailed them to ask for the admitted students days dates, not to validate my letter. Anyways it’s real. I was only joking but do thinks it’s strange nobody else has got one yet. I’m sure people will start to soon.

@thousandmoons I did CSSSI too that was a fun time, which summer did you do it? and did you do the advanced internship?

Its March. Anyone who wouldve gotten them would surely have been notified last month.

Anyways, most acceptees are notified in Ivy Day itself, so not getting one doesnt matter, and it mainly speaks of the need of the app on the class rather than the skills and the app strength itself.

The statements, “the Final Transcript thing doesnt matter. It’s just something that the adcom needs/recommends to certain apps for additional data.” and “Keep in mind the integral point that the Final School Transcript is asked (if at all, as schools like MIT dont need them even if a persons admitted and chooses to enroll)” are not accurate.

Colleges, including MIT, require that a Final Transcript be submitted for every matriculating student.

@shuttlebus

I do know most colleges do require them, but regarding MIT specifically, their CDS specifically states that a High School Diploma/GED/Equivalent isnt required for enrollment.

So incorrectness regarding the requirements of the final transcript makes sense, but there’s a certain gray area where CDS’s state the requirement of ‘diplomas’ not necessary. Idk if thats the same as a Final Transcript, but its pretty close.

There are a rare few schools having this clause on their CDS. If not, MIT is the only one i guess.

MIT’s CDS can be found very easily. Just search for it online. There’s a whole history of it from Class of 2022 following the previous ones.

You’ll find it there in the Admissions Data Subsection (I’m not linking it due to not knowing the policy of links on this forum).

Unless HS Diploma (or eq.) is not similar/same as Final Transcript, the part of the statement(s) is right.

Just a clarification.

@theguy1 There is no gray area - a high school diploma and a final transcript are not equivalent. If you are accepted to MIT, MIT will require a final transcript just like every other college.

@Theguy please be careful of the advice you are posting. Below is What MIT sent last year, in direct contradiction to your statement above.

"Final Transcript Instructions

Deadline: June 20, 2018, or if unavailable by then, within 10 days of when your final transcript becomes available.

Dear Student,
As described in the Terms of Admission document that you received with your admission packet, MIT requires you to submit official school transcript(s) with your final grades for all courses taken in your final school year. Here is how to submit the information:
• Transcripts should include your full name, date of birth and the name of the school.
• If you’ve already graduated or are no longer attending school, send an email to ua-process@mit.edu to let us know that we should already have your final grades. Include your full name and date of birth.
• If you took courses at multiple schools/institutions during your final year, we will want to see official final grades for all courses. For example, if you took an online course and the final grade for that course appears on your high school transcript, you can simply submit your high school transcript. However, if your online course grade does not appear on your high school transcript, you will need to send an additional transcript that indicates your final grade in that course.
• The Admissions Committee will review your final grades. In the unlikely event you do not submit your final grades or your academic performance is found not up to MIT standards, we have the right to revoke or defer your offer of admission."

Every school I am aware of requires a final transcript*

You also stated “Its March. Anyone who wouldve gotten them would surely have been notified last month” in reference to likely letters. In fact last years likely letters were dated March 9th and received shortly thereafter.

I know you are anxious and trying to help but given your authoritative tone people may act an your incorrect advice.

Caveat from me…I have no idea what this year’s timeline or protocol will be. Just sharing first hand experience from last year.

Good luck.

MODERATOR’S NOTE:
Let’s move on from what MIT requires, please.

LL’s are still coming by based one what I’ve heard, and they may come as late as a week before RD dec date(s) due to mailing and stuff (or email delays)

@aidenmeyer27
did you apply RD for PLME?

Sighhhh the anxiety until the 28th is killing me tbh. Are there hints or anything to figure out your chances? ?

@ashley_2023 of course. USnews. Calm yourself XD
