I want to major in applied math (which Brown has a really great department for), but am also considering premed (which JHU is obviously strong in). With Brown’s open curriculum, I could take the same courses in JHU’s premed track, but I’m not sure if it will be as vigorous or prepare me for med school as well as JHU’s premed.
Also, JHU is known for it’s amazing, well-funded research. Brown, on the other hand, has the prestige and added opportunities from being an ivy league school…

Please give me your opinions! I’m stuck! :/

Brown is also great at premed and will prepare you as well and maybe be a less competitive culture. Can’t go wrong. Brown has tons of research opportunities according to my daughter and student posters here. Yes applied math is great. My daughter did math-cs and the preparation for grad school was stellar. I don’t know all that much about details at JHU so sorry can’t give a more balanced comment.

This is just from hearsay so take this as you will, but the JHU pre-med program is supposedly an extremely competitive environment. For some, that can be stimulating and help you work harder. For others, the collaborative environment that Brown fosters is more conducive to learning. Both are outstanding universities, but that difference is something to consider.

I’d like to echo what WuLiMaster said. JHU has a reputation for being pretty cutthroat when it comes to pre-med. Brown is amazing for pre-med. I would argue that the classes are at least as rigorous as JHU’s or other comparable schools (in fact, I’ve heard that organic chemistry is a lot harder at Brown than at peer schools), but without the competitiveness between the students. (Source: I went to Brown for undergrad and I’m in med school now.)

I could tell you, but then I’d have to kill you.
