Brown Transfer Admission Statistics, etc.

I was wondering if anyone could give me an idea of how selective Brown is when it comes to transfer admissions.

Their website says that they typically accept 200 of 800 applicants per year, but that just seems so high.

Does anyone know the transfer admission statistics for the past few years, or have any speculations as to what the outcome may be this year?

And on a slightly different note, does anyone know if Brown requests midsemester reports for transfer applicants?

Admission figures commonly shift drastically each year. I strongly believe that they will not accept 25% of transfers for fall 2007. Again, it is dependant: i) how many students apply ii) how many openings they have for transfer students. Speculatively I would assume Brown admits 13% of applicants this year.

Secondarily, Brown, in fact, requires midterm grades of transfer applicants, as does Cornell and WUSTL.

Yes, they do require midterm grades, and so does Cornell and WUSTL.

got any evidence to back this up?

Yeah, all their website says is, "If necessary, an interim unofficial transcript of current work may be submitted".

I don't know about you guys, but that most certainly does not make it seem mandatory.

Call and ask. I was told: "it would affect my decision." I added a class this past semester and reported it.

http://www.brown.edu/Administration/Admission/appforms/Transfer/Tran-Instructions.pdf

A current list of classes is needed to complete your file. You get them signed if you have a list of "A's." If your current semester's GPA is not a 4.0 disregard my comments.

That doesn't sound like they formally request it, though.

You are making their decision much easier. It is a lot more helpful to see that you have an A in Calculus II, not just that you are enrolled in the class. How do they know that you do not have a D? Get your school to do it on letterhead. Get your professors to sign it. It is optional, though.

Yeah, I'm just frustrated because I got an A in chemistry last semester (the subject I plan on majoring in), and I'm worried it may decline slightly. I recieved a B on the first test of this semester, and I'm afraid I won't be able to pull it up before midsemester reports are submitted.

Maybe I'll just include a letter explaining, if my grade does, in fact, decline. What do you think?

Then, send a list of this semester's classes w/o grades. You may lift your "B" to an "A," so you would not need to write about it. It could hurt your chances.

the courses you're taking this semester/quarter show up on your transcript (for all the schools I've attended, at least)

no need to send a list

I know, I know. My first semester grades as well as the courses in which I'm currently enrolled were on my transcript that was sent to Brown. That was not what I was asking.

What I REALLY want to know is, if my first semester GPA was solid (3.9), and I submitted 3 recs from my professors (who also happened to be the department heads of chem, bio and phys), would not reporting a midsemester report really be detrimental to my chances?

they're not asking for a midsemester report

it'll be considered as supplementary material and they'll trash it

Now that's what I was looking to hear, lol.

I'm just a little too paranoid for my own good, like all the rest of you guys on this forum :P

Okay, back my original reasons for posting. Any speculations regarding this years transfer admission outcome? Anyone got any real, legit information?

Emangelik: We agree. Brown does not require midterm grades next to the classes you are taking. However, Brown would not throw it away if you did include it next to your "current list of courses, especially if it was done by a school official."

That last comment is preposterous.

They also ask for a transcript! A transcript typically has both classes and grades on them. Therefore, I will do the same with "my list of courses," and it will not be thrown out. They ask you for your "current list of courses." There is a difference between sending Brown a 10 foot statue you constructed out of playdough (lostincode), and what I am suggesting!

are you saying not to submit them unless u have a 4.0?

Unccharlotte, you're right. If I feel it'll help my chances, I'll send it. If I feel it will be detrimental, I won't. Easy as that.

Anyway, let's get back to my initial reasons for posting. I've read on this forum that last year, Brown's tranfer acceptance rate was dismal, but I also heard it caused many people to complain, as the school had surplus housing.

It seems likely to me that the acceptance rate will go up this year, perhaps not to 25% as the website says, but hopefull it'll be above 10%.

What do you guys think?

since I am on the quarter system, I am sending in an unofficial grade sheet that I made with professor signatures. Do you guys think its worth it to submit a 3.6 with 18 units?

With the way elite school freshman and transfer admissions are going, I don't think you should expect the transfer rate to jump that much. I imagine it will be around 15%, but that is pure speculation.

this could be a fun betting game, lol

0-5% = (1)
5.01-7% = (2)
7.01-9% = (3)
9.01-10% = (4)
10.01-11% = (5)
11.01-13% = (6)
13.01-15% = (7)
15.01-20% = (8)

see how the intervals are lessened around the 10% mark? We should each buy a number for $10. The winner then gets $70. (refunds his application fee, lol)
