Brown University class of 2021 ED applicants discussion

@ricka8 Brown recommends the ACT with writing. I think they’ll look at it, but it won’t be considered as much as your composite. Brown does place an emphasis on its students’ ability to write, so that’s when they may consider the essay. However, if your application essays are great, I think the ACT essay will be overlooked.

@ap012199 Thanks! I’m gonna try to call admissions on Monday to see what they say about it as well.

How is the presumed increase in ED applications going to affect us?

@gnskid I didnt get an email either. Honestly I don’t really want one because I know I will stress about it and I don’t have the time for that :stuck_out_tongue:

just got an email for the alumni interview! so nervous and unsure of how to prepare ahhhh

@ricka8 calling admissions won’t help you in this case. You’ve submitted your application at this point and it’s best to just wait for the admissions decision. I’m in the same boat as you are with solid composite but poor writing score. That alone will not be a deciding factor for admissions

@johnwayne8321 Would it be possible to ask them not to look at the essay score? Since it isn’t required, just recommended.

Do you guys know if they started to read applications yet or how they read them? I’m kinda of nervous that some things that were just indicated as “downloaded” today will not be read as a part of my application. I also a have an interview this weekend so I’m unsure if that will be considered or not.

I haven’t gotten my portal login information yet and when I emailed the interviewing person she said that there was no record of my application yet. Should I be worried? When I called the IT services last week, they said they send out portal info en masse on Wednesdays, so I’m assuming that I’ll be able to check my application by the 22nd. Once I get a portal, does that mean that I am officially “in the system”? I’m planning to call the Admissions Office again today, but can someone here tell me how screwed (or not screwed) I am?

@trixandgiggles The interview will definitely be reviewed as long as your interviewer submits his report by Dec 1. I’m sure they see everything even if its downloaded later. I don’t know how they do the application review process, but there’s lots of info on the internet of how Harvard does it, and I’m sure Brown does it similarly.

@miyakoiwata That doesn’t sound too good if they have no record of your application… Definitely call to see what they say. I thought they had finished sending out portal info, but maybe not if that’s what IT told you.

Just in case some people don’t know, Brown requests that you send your first marking period grades to them. I was just on the phone with them asking how to do that and they say to have your counselor fax it to them (the admissions office I assume).

@ricka8 by “marking period grades” do they mean finalized grades? Because I don’t get mine until January for first semester.

@ap012199 Not sure what you mean but I don’t think so. At my school, we have report cards for every quarter so I am sending the grades from the first one since the next grades come out in January. Brown wants any grades that come out by December, I believe.

wait, so we have to send in our first quarter grades before we see our admissions decision?

Question: For ED applicants - when checking the online portal, should it say ED someplace? For my daughter, there is no indication anyplace to indicate if the application is being considered ED or RD. The encouraging note is that she DID do the interview already, which would be early if it were for RD.

A second question: where does it say that applicants should send in first quarter grades?

According to a thread 2 years ago, Brown will request the first marking period grades from certain applicants but not all. If you want you can send them even if they don’t specifically email your counselor about them. I don’t think they are required, but you should probably call admissions just to double-check. The person I spoke to was unsure.
@freshprinceofcc
@profdad2021 Mine doesn’t say ED anywhere, I don’t think that’s an issue.

@ricka8 How did you find out you needed to submit your first marking period grades? Did you get an email? I haven’t received anything like that yet.

Correct. If they want them, they’ll tell you.

They will contact you and/or your GC

So…is it OK to have them sent without being asked?
