@spayurpets what I don’t understand about that data is that if the average ACT is 32, how come the percent accepted for applicants with 29-32 ACT svores is lower than the 33-35?
I heard that in the IVY leagues, within the Asian applicants, many if not the majority are Chinese, Japanese and Koreans. Why can’t I see “Korea” in the list of countries that are represented for co 2020? Did they not accept any Koreans this year? I’m just curious. I’m British and I see my country there which is nice.
At Brown, the majority of applicants from Asian countries are from China, India and Korea. There are relatively few Japanese applicants and students. It is hard to imagine no Koreans were accepted. The most likely explanation is that Korea was accidentally omitted from the list, although it is also possible that the Koreans who were accepted chose other schools.
Hey everyone! Just wanted to join the conversation as another Brown ED applicant I’m super excited/nervous, but I know that whatever happens will be for the best. Can’t wait to go through the application process with y’all!!
@ap012199 maybe because the hooked applicants scores are considerably lower and pulling down the average???
IDK. I presume Brown just accepts more kids with higher scores. The good thing about Brown though is that they really care much more about an applicant’s hobbies, ECs, personality, etc. I know they give the test some weight, but when it comes down to choosing applicants who all have scored in the top 3 percent of test takers, it really comes down to the more human things in the app.
Does anyone know if Brown looks at what each individual school offers for extracurriculars and compares it to what you do? My school offers very little clubs to my interests and it’s also very hard to convince the administration to let you start new clubs at my school, especially since they just had budget cuts. My school usually directs most of the money towards the sports department as well. And I also am pretty sure I live in a competitive region for applicants
@Seirien they don’t exactly do that, but you can ask your counselor to write about the fact that you take advantage of the club offerings along with your schoolwork. My school is very small so we don’t have any of the deca or Olympiad clubs but we had about a 20% acceptance to Brown last year. My guess is that as long as you show dedication, you’ll be fine.
@ap012199 That’s good to hear. My school is also small and doesn’t provide many opportunities to people interested in STEM as I noticed most students who graduate usually pursue an English education or business degree. And my school isn’t well known for students matriculating to “very selective universities” (I think the class of 2016 had 2 go to tufts, but for ivies, I think in the past 6 years, 2 got accepted to Harvard and 1 to Columbia and that’s about it.) Also this past year, I got a new guidance councilor, but it seems she really likes me so I’m really hoping she can write a great recommendation for me.
Hello!! I’m applying to Brown ED and my main concern is my GPA. I go to a school where grades are rough…and I was forced to take AP Spanish last year (they literally gave me no option) and that class messed up my GPA like crazy for my junior year…well not like crazy, it just stayed the exact same from sophomore year when it would’ve gone up without AP Spanish being factored in. Anyway, my GPA right now is 3.56. My ACT is a 33 and I have two good SAT subject tests, one a 730 and the other a 780. I’m pretty confident about my essay and overall personality matching up with the school…do y’all think I’ll be able to overcome my GPA?
I’m so terrified and exhilarated to be applying–I’m glad I have y’all and this discussion!!
So Brown’s class of 2020 ED’s acceptance rate was higher than last year. Apparently it was because they were expecting less students to apply for RD and they were also trying to be financially strategic (this is what I heard) . Do you think the ED 2021 acceptance rate will be higher too? Do you think there will be less number of students applying for ED this year?
@abellefol your GPA is a little low, but your good test scores and applying ED will definitely help!
@marchingahead I think so. I’ve found that colleges with ED decisions keep filling up their class more and more each year through ED applicants. I think this is a good way to choose students because the university would end up with more passionate students who applied to said university as their first choice. Also, I think the amount of ED applicants may be a little lower this year as Brown’s applicant pool becomes more self selective.
Hey everyone! Fellow ED’er here! Really excited to submit my application! Has anyone else run the NPC and gotten a pretty low number? My family is mid to upper middle class (my dad is military) and it estimates the total cost will be 12k. Do you guys think this is accurate? I was so shocked because the other schools I’m looking at are around 40k with merit aid. Not that I’m complaining haha, just trying to gauge the NPC accuracy.
@pineapple1203 welcome!! I ran the NPC and got $0 in aid… However, I only estimated how much my family saves/ spends each year. My guess is that it’s pretty accurate.
What are you guys writing your essays about (not to steal ideas or anything, just wondering)?
hey guys! just a question: which school cares more about scores: brown or princeton? and which of the 2 schools I mentioned has a higher acceptance rate for early action/decision (my parents want to know…and they’re basically trying to sway me away from EDing to brown, but I’m too in love with brown!)
good luck throughout this process guys! i’m hoping we all end up at the best place
@allima both schools’ CDS state that scores are very important. Brown’s ED acceptance rate is higher than Princeton’s EA acceptance rate.
@ap012199 thanks, I thought Brown’s ED rate was higher! are you a current student there or alumnus? you seem to be pretty knowledgeable in almost everything about college admissions
@allima thanks! I’m a senior this year too who happens to have an affinity towards Brown. I wish I was an alum Applying ED!! I’ve visited twice and have tried to learn everything there is to learn about Brown lol. My mom is an interviewer and alumnus of Harvard so that’s why I know everything I do. I’m really not trying to get my hopes up though.
@allima I thought I should just add my 2 cents – yes @ap012199 is right about the acceptance rate. Brown has a higher early acceptance rate than Princeton. Also, I would bet that Princeton cares more about scores. The kids from my school that get into Princeton are the super brainy, high test score kids. Brown has more well-rounded, artsy, interesting kids.
My roommate for four years in boarding school is rowing at Brown and he absolutely loves it. I’ve heard so many positive things about Brown from him, especially its unique BEO major and awesome campus. Hope my post helps!
