Brown University class of 2021 ED applicants discussion

@abellefol I think your GPA and test scores cross Brown’s threshold for sure. I think with regards to standardized testing and grades, Ivys impose a minimum threshold that you must pass in order to be considered. I think once you are in that range, a higher test score doesn’t change much about your appeal. Good news is - I think you’re in that range.

However, extracurriculars and crafting a great story are also incredibly important for admission. You have all the test scores and grades to apply. Now its just up to you to package yourself well. What is unique about you? What unique perspectives can you share? What is a story that truly shaped you and prepared your character for a place like Brown? Yes, admissions is tough, but you have the scores, so that already is a step in the correct direction.

Hi everyone! I am strongly considering EDing for Brown but I am conflicted about a few things.
I have an unweighted GPA of 3.96 and a 5.2 weighted. I have a good number of ECs and am very well rounded.
However, my scores are not the best: 1360 on new SAT and 29 on ACT.
I am retaking the ACT next month and hoping for a higher score.
My dilemma is that the next SAT is administered in October and I am unsure whether or not I should register for the actual SAT test again to raise my score or to take subject tests. The next SAT test date after that is in November but it is after the ED deadline so I am very unsure of what to do.

Thanks for inviting me here, @ap012199

Hi all. I’m absolutely in love with Brown, like you are. And I’m extremely cautious about getting my hopes up, like you are.

I have three things to discuss:

• I have a 1510 SAT (out of 1600) and a 3.92 uGPA. My SAT2’s are 700 Chem and 710 Math2. I’m ED’ing because Brown’s absolutely my first choice, knowing that my chances are low. But do my stats sound like Brown stats? I feel like they don’t. I’m not valedictorian, not legacy, no hooks. A lot of the things I see on CC make me feel inadequate.

• In my essay, I joke briefly about my sexuality. Is Brown as liberal as I think it is, and do you guys think the admissions officers will appreciate my opening up?

• Will they see my senior year first marking period scores at all? Mine come out in early Nov.

@coterie hopefully other people will comment but I’ll just say this for now:

Your stats are great. Especially that SAT score. SAT II could be a little higher but they’re no means for rejection. Honestly, I feel like CC skews stats for colleges like Brown. While 32 is the average ACT score for Brown, it seems like 34 is the average for people who applied to Brown on CC. But once you get past the academic look on your app (which I’m sure you’ll pass) the AdComs look more closely at personality, traits, etc.

Brown is definitely as liberal as you think – maybe even more so. They definitely get a lot of essays dealing with sexuality. For some reason, most likely because of its accepting community, Brown has a very high percentage of LGBTQ students.

@ap012199
Thanks for that response. I sure as hell hope your point of view isn’t too rose-tinted.

I have a completely unrelated question: what’s with the username? Is that your AP code or something?

@coterie lol no those are my initials and then random numbers (I carried this username over from another website that generated one for me).

Hey guys! Just wanted to continue the discussion. Based off of Brown’s recent CDS, the acceptance rate for men is 11% while it is 7% for women (because many more women apply but the admitted class is balanced). Why do you think many more women apply than men?

The overall US college attendance ratio is 56% women, 44% men; Brown is forcing balance.

Is it worth retaking a 32.25 on the ACT if I’m applying to Brown ED? I feel like the rest of my app is really strong (4.0 UW, hardest classes, good AP scores, ECs, essays, etc).

@ap012199 it depends on how you can budget your time. If u can study for the act and still maintain your gpa and extracurriculars, then I say go for it! But if u maybe don’t have the time to study and retake it without it burdening your schedule then I say don’t worry to much about it too much and focus insteqd on making the rest of your app stellar

I have a question regarding the ACT~
I’m retaking it in September- do I have to send it directly to Brown if I’m applying ED?
Brown is my absolute dream school but I feel I’m grossly under qualified/: good luck to everyone!

@kendizzle I’m retaking it Sept. 10 and applying ED too!! I don’t think it will need to be sent directly to Brown since results from the test will be back a month before the ED deadline.

@ap012199 thank you for the info! I’m still unsure if I’m going to apply. I’m in love with brown but my ACT is pretty low… Hopefully the September test treats me well. I’ve got my fingers crossed.

Just out of curiosity, what does everyone want to concentrate in? I bet you all have some amazing interests, and I’d love hearing about them! I probably want to concentrate in Sociology primarily and then maybe minor in English. I’m still investigating the Public Policy route though.

@ithinkuracontra I’m going to hopefully pull off a double concentration in Literary Arts and architecture. I know they seem totally unrelated but they do have some underlying similarities

I plan on concentrating in biochemistry/molecular biology or maybe something else in the life sciences. I also plan on being Pre-med.

Just curious, but is anyone planning on going to Brown Bearings 2016?

@Seirein considering that it’s only a day long and I live in CA, I probably won’t fly out to Providence for it lol. But if you go, tell us how it was

I know that Brown doesn’t accept on a college-by-college basis, but is there still benefit in applying with intended interests in fields that Brown needs to fill?

@ap012199 I would guess probably yes? But then again, a lot of people do apply to concentrations they know certain colleges need more of and such or to “fit what they want” just to get in so can’t be 100% sure :frowning: Also, does anyone know how “big” of a role class rank is in ED to Brown? I’m well into top 10% of my class (top 7-8% to be exact at a small school,) but I keep hearing Brown mostly just took unhooked applicants in the top 1-3% of their class in reality.

I also wish everyone good luck this year as most people start school today!
