Brown University class of 2021 ED applicants discussion

@ap012199 If the local glitch theory is correct - then those local folks got calls. There’d be no concern with NOT getting a call.

Wait if people from France and SoCal got a call, that probably means it’s not localized?? Please correct me if I’m wrong

@aidanmc9 In this context, “local” could mean almost anything. Like…applicants whose decisions were being processed/uploaded during the same short period of time. Or, applicants whose applications were handled by the same 1 or 2 admissions counselors. Anybody clustered in a group for any possible reason. Really no way of telling.

All the calls from SoCal have been at one school, and same with France. There was also a call in Florida. I don’t think it’s localized, actually. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t think anyone else from SoCal got a call outside of that one school.

@profdad2021 did you get a response yet?

Mainly, i just hope there aren’t any more calls! Or, that my family doesn’t hear about any more calls. Maybe i will develop self control and get off CC!! At least till Wednesday.

I really don’t feel like we know WHY Brown admissions did this but i hope it was small scale and done! Glitch or whatever. I vote for just getting to Wednesday and coping with the result. If its good news for my daughter AND the financial aid package comes out as expected, then celebration will follow. If not…move on!

And of course, fingers crossed for the CC Brown community!

@ap012199 On the issue of emailing the admissions counselor? Will have to follow up with my offspring tomorrow (i.e., later today). Long evening with a basketball game. No reply but maybe she didn’t email yet or chose not to. She handles this sort of task.

FYI Reddit says the phone calls are nothing to be concerned about. REALLY seems like time to not fret about it anymore. Unfortunate that it happened. That’s it. Maybe easier to forget about it for a parent than an applicant, I know!

I am far from an expert but the only reason to call top students in advance to tell them they were accepted would be to make them feel special to try to get them to accept. Since we are talking ED, there isn’t really any reason for admissions to call candidates in advance since students who are admitted ED have to accept (absent Financial Aid issues). Couple that with the fact that they also called some students to tell them they were rejected and it definitely seems to be related to some sort of glitch type thing.

I also saw the congratulations glitch on my portal, but no one else from my area/city seems to have- to the best of my knowledge. However, I am the only one from MY school who applied ED to Brown. (Outside USA) My college admissions remained pending but for a few hours yesterday, a status appeared below admissions decisions and claimed ‘Committed to Brown’ (I had to commit and answer some survey questions along with the congratulatory message). However, that disappeared later-sometime around when office hours begin for Brown.
One thing confuses me, though- is anyone able to view their internal academic record which claims they’re admitted as degree candidates? I have been able to see it since yesterday. I’ve logged in/refreshed multiple times.
Mine was updated a few hours back, still claiming I was admitted, (something about writing requirements) even AFTER phone calls were apparently made (I didn’t get one and haven’t been contacted in any manner) so idk what’s going on. Anyone else able to view it? It gives me a Brown student ID number as well-the same characters/number of numbers as those on Brown student ID cards, with a B in front- different from my Common App and Brown Applicant number. I contacted the Admissions Office via email explaining the most important parts of this briefly and asking for clarity but business hours don’t begin till Monday so I just got their automated response telling me to wait for office hours.
My Brown portal also completely changed, it now has a Students tab, a Proxy tab, etc. and allows me to view things like ‘Academic Record’, ‘Dining and Housing Options’, etc. My application is also found under the title ‘PROCESSED Applications’. Also have a section for my ‘Student Account’. Not sure what this means at all. Anyone having the same problem? I really need to know if this happened to everyone with the glitch.

@opopopopopop1 which country are you from?

Did this glitch happen for everybody? Or only certain individuals/schools/areas? Did everyone who had the glitch see an acceptance or did people see rejections/deferrals as well? Does it make a difference for those who didn’t get a call or see the glitch? (NJ if it means anything)

I’m having a panic attack if you can’t tell lol

@BrownOrBust999 I didn’t see any change to my portal (still says application is being processed and decisions not available). And I didn’t get a call. I’m from NY.

I’m from NJ and didn’t get a call

Is it just Crossroads in So Cal, or are there other schools that were called in So Cal? I find this highly disturbing.

Did this happen last year? call all admitted applicants before Dec 14th?
If not , I guess this is due to the glitch.

@cjane44 pretty sure it was just Crossroads. That’s the only SoCal school I’ve heard of that’s been affected by the glitch. Now the question is whether the glitch affected all accepted ED applicants… my guess is no since it’s super unlikely that only one school out of all of SoCal had acceptances.

I received nothing (in NYC). No one else in my grade did either, and we have at least 10 people ED’ing to Brown, and we have a lot of super talented kids so I doubt no one got in

@BrownOrBust999 awhh don’t worry! Me neither, and I’m also in the US. (not saying exactly where for privacy, but not in any of the mentioned regions). I think it’s just a glitch. But whatever happens next Wednesday, the fact that you and everyone can apply to Brown, and put all that work in to it, and give it your all, really says a lot. They can’t take every great applicant, but there’s a lot of great schools out there, so wherever you go (hopefully Brown! but anywhere), you’ll shine
