What sentence? my portal just has 3 tabs, profile, change password, change security question
^^^^ thats the profile, not the portal. There should be a direct link to your portal in an email titled “Important: Your Brown University Application”
Mine under decision says decisions are not available
^That’s what mine says also. Does a current sibling legacy carry any weight at Brown?
I think so, I have legacy as well so we will see
Mine also has “decisions not currently available”. I’m an RD applicant, btw. I heard that Brown’s portals are weird, so we probably shouldn’t stress over things we see or don’t see!
Hey everyone! I just wanted to let everyone know I got a likely letter today, so if you guys are hoping you may get one… they could be coming soon!
I just got mine today!
@andrerobertmd Congrats!! Would you mind posting stats, ECs, essays, etc.?
What is a likely letter?
dumb question, but what is a likely letter?
@balletgirl17 schools use them to indicate to the top applicants that they will be receiving good news come decision day. Some schools only use them for athletes, but I believe Ivies send them to non-athletes as well. A very small percentage of the incoming class gets them though.
@andrerobertmd Congrats!! Did you receive the letter in the mail? that is so great!
I have the sentence and was ED deferred.
@andrerobertmd question about financial aid. Did Brown request any info from you? Just trying to determine if they do or don’t and if that indicates admission. Thanks and congrats!
Any likely letter applicants have the button by any chance? Or do you guys have the sentence along with all the other RD people
^^ Specifically @andrerobertmd cuz I don’t even know if there are any other LLs here
Ok, sorry for taking so long to respond. I got my LL in the mail yesterday afternoon, and I have had no FA information requested. I don’t think it has anything to do with admission, to be completely honest. Nevertheless, I did my FA relatively early, so maybe that is why I didn’t get any sort of request for info. For my other information:
ACT: 35 C (SS: 36)
SAT (New): 1590 C
6 AP Tests (five 5s, one 4)
GPA(UW): 4.0
GPA(W): 4.61 IIRC
For the other stuff, it was pretty typical. I am part of my academic team, cross-country team, and a few other minor things. When I submitted, I had been a semi-finalist for Coke scholarship (yay I got it!) I had founded a couple clubs and volunteering organizations through my school, but nothing extremely substantial. I think what got me in were my essays–I just think they spoke to the admissions council pretty well (Even though, imo, they were my worst essays out of any application I did.) Here is what they were about:
CA Essay: One of my favorite essays ever, it was about how my mind wanders about and connects random stuff together. The essay just jumped around from topic to topic, and it was just a fun, entertaining essay. I think it really showcased what type of personality I had, and I think that came across to readers.
Areas of Study Essay: I wrote about how I did a Philosophy class at my state’s (KY) Governor’s Scholars Program, and how I kept finding myself referring back to quantum physics to prove my points. Then I said how I realized that every subject is connected, and Brown’s open curriculum was perfect for exploring those connections with other students and such.
Why Brown? Essay: I wrote about when I spent a few weeks at Brown one summer, and I had no A/C in my room, so I dragged my pillow and blanket to a lounge area in the middle of campus and just went to sleep. Then I said how I had a dream about my future at Brown, and I realized it was my future home or something really sappy along those lines.
Where I’ve Lived Essay: I’ve lived in Eastern KY my whole life, and I talked about how we have a really bad stereotype of just pure stupidity and that everyone is on drugs, etc. I said how some of us didn’t fit in that lens, but because of the stereotype opportunities pass us up.
Community/Group Essay: I wrote about how I eat lunch with my chem teacher every day at school with a couple other students, and how she became a mentor for me and helped me feel comfortable being open.
Interview was 8/10. I drove an hour and half for it, and the guy was super nice and we talked for a long time. I can’t wait to tell him I got in!
Overall, IDK how I got a Likely Letter. Honestly, I almost feel like it was a mistake or something My application was so much weaker than my others, but I guess the person who read it just happened to understand me. I suppose being from Eastern KY could be a hook, but KY as a whole isn’t that underrepresented as a state, even though my region definitely is (nobody has gone to an ivy in the closest 3 counties for ~10 years.) I really think it is just a game of luck, and I happened to get some good luck my way. If yalls have any other questions, just send them out, I’ll be on here daily until March 30th for sure! Good luck everyone!
Oh! Also, my portal still says decisions are unavailable or something like that, so don’t think if it hasn’t changed it means anything!
@andrerobertmd thank you so much for taking the time to give such a detailed response for everyone! If you don’t mind, one more question, was Brown a requesting college on IDOC for you? Sorry for all the questions!!!
