Brown University

Oh, PS, I'm dumb -- I'm a junior right now. Rising senior. Wow.

I just applied to this program and I am wondering if it is a worthwhile experience.

I live very close, but I am thinking of staying there because I think it will add to the experience. If you have attended, do you agree? I hear that it is fun and can get a little crazy. While I am all for fun, I don't want to go somewhere where the kids are out of control.

Also, I am only in 9th grade. I put Intro to Medicine as my first choice. Do you think it would be better to wait until next year or the year after to do something like this? I want my summer to be fun, but I also want to do something that I will benefit from and that will also add to my transcript.

Lastly, are there any other programs located in New England that you would recommend?

Thanks.

vab22- i attended last summer as rising junior, and i took a mini course in film. it was defiantly the highlight of my summer, i would defiantly recomend it! and yes, staying there does add to it....a lot. and don't worry things never got out of control

Poseur - my daughter applied and was accepted into the same course "Secrets of Learning and Memory". She will be rising sophomore in the summer, probably one of the youngest in the class. But she is interested in psychology/neuro/cognitive science, and this course sounds great, complete with a trip to the marine lab in Cape Cod at the end! Maybe you'll meet in the class if you apply as well!

For all of you that are going, what courses are you taking?
It would be cool if we met someone there who we were already familiar with from online.

I haven't been accepted(my application was processed 2/29), but if I get in my first choice is Intro to Medicine.

Anyone else?

I went last year, for two measly weeks, and I really wanted to go this year for the full 7, but it's really expensive. That's a year of high school tuition for most private schools in the area! I don't think my parents would pay for that. Plus, I'm supposed to be lifeguarding this summer, and I can't exactly take 2 months leave on a seasonal job. I'm hoping I can go for the 3 week session, though.

I'm thinking about going this summer and taking the Anthropology mini course for two weeks.
Has anybody taken that course before? Did you like it? Was it fun and interesting?

I got accepted yesterday :). It only took 5 days. Now I'm just waiting for my packet to come in the mail.

has anyone taken the journalism class or heard from anyone who did? is it supposed to be good?

I got accepted! I'm taking the film class. does anyone know how it is?

ok another question also.
i see from previous posts that a lot of people go by themselves (dont go with a friend they already know). is it pretty easy to make friends, even if youre a bit more of a reserved person?

Hey, I went this past summer and I had an amazing time.. I'll be happy to answer any questions. :) It is REALLY easy to make friends, and I think I'm more of a reserved person too at first. I went by myself, and I actually met a lot of kids at the airport in Providence (and going on the shuttle to Brown), which made me feel a lot better knowing I had friends before I even set foot on campus! Then you basically make the rest of your friends from class and your dorm/floor, unless you like randomly approach people, which some people do lol. It's important to become friends with people on your floor because it's where you have to stay after curfew, but the first couple days they have icebreakers and get-together things that make it really easy to make friends. There's an ice-cream social the first night too so you can meet everyone from your session. Everyone there is so friendly and just remember they're all in the same position as you, wanting to make friends, so it's really not hard. Everyone's really chill and people will just like randomly approach you in the dorms and start talking to you. Just try to be as outgoing as you can. It's a great experience overall, and I wish I could go again this year!

tweet, is it weird to just have one class a day and then have total free time?

Also, do the classes give a lot of hw?

It wasn't really weird for me because my class was from 12:30 to 3:30, so I basically slept late, sometimes ate lunch and then went to class. Then I would eat soon after class because I'd usually be starving, and I'd have the night to do whatever. There's always a lot to do, you can hang out in people's rooms, go to college admissions seminars (they're really good, I only went to one but I regret not going to more), shop/eat on Thayer Street, or walk to Providence Place Mall downtown (best mall ever).

I took Intro to Sociology and my class didn't give a lot of homework at all. We had two short 2-3 page papers throughout the class and one final research paper (my class was three weeks). We were supposed to read every night, but nothing happened if you didn't, you just wouldn't discuss the next day. My friends were taking a Genetics and Behavior class and they actually had tests, but since the class wasn't for credit, the teacher bribed them with getting the results of this lab they did with their DNA if they passed. It really depends what your class is, but I don't think the hw is too bad.

so you dont ever get bored with all that free time?

hey everyone! I was recently admitted to to Brown's summer {mini}course: An Introduction to Medicine. I'm absolutely estatic(sp?) as my ultimate goal would be to attend medical school and was hoping a past participant could share their experience with the program with me! (particularly AITM) Is the majority of your time spent in a classroom/ laboratory, is the instructor an actual doctor, etc...? Thanks! Any input is greatly apprechiated!

what was your favorite part of the program?

Holly 11-
I went this past summer. And let me tell you- it was one of the best experiences of my life.

I went up for three weeks, and after the first one i had a friend from my high school join me up there- in a different class. I was nervous about going alone at first, but i met people in the airport/shuttle to the campus. Everyone is a bit nervous at first- as long as you just kinda of accept it and go for it, you'll be fine. I became really good friends with the kids on my floor unit and the kids above. we landed up just meshing togather as groups- and spending a lot of time togather- defiantly one the highlights.

And in regard to the free time, i was afraid of that too. I had class from like 9:30 to 1 (or something like that). And the time just flew by afterclass. I worked on my film (i was in the digital movie production class) and hugn out with friends. You can go down to the mall wheneveryou want. Me and my friend actually went down at like 10 one night, but to our dismay it had closed.haha.

If anyone has any more questions, i'd be happy to answer them

the hw load really depends on the class your taking. i was in the digital film production class- so i just had a running assingment of working through the production steps. A lot of my friends were in the medical/bio classes and they had to do research papers. My roomate was in Macr-econ and he had some too. its reasonible though, and the proffesors tend to be relaxed.

Did anyone here receive financial aid for this summer program? If so, how much did the aid did you receive?
If you have an answer, but for some reason feel uncomfortable posting here, you can always PM me--if you don't mind, that is.
Thanks!!
